3:55 *How Long Does US Copyright Last* (as of November 2024): US creative works that were “officially authorized” for first-publication before 1929 are very likely in the Public Domain. As well, works published prior to March 1, 1989 without a copyright notice affixed are likely in the Public Domain. If a US author/artist/photographer died before 1954 (life plus 70-years), his/her work is likely in the Public Domain. Authors were statutorily required to renew their copyright if their works were first-published between 1929 and 1963; otherwise, their works entered the Public Domain. Music sound-recordings may have a different US copyright term. Other countries may have different copyright terms. Don’t assume it matches the US’s life plus 70-years.

Hi, this is a good point and we appreciate your feedback. The majority of our viewing audience is U.S. based so we try to cater to a large base. Thank you!

I don't get it you probably used creative commons in this video but you didn't give credit to them in thr description.

What I'm not understanding is that let's say you do copy a google image and then use it to make your own version that's slightly deviated. Wouldn't that be totally legal because the image is on public domain and you deviated the image in your style???

@MM3OG wrote, “What I'm not understanding is that let's say you do copy a google image and then use it to make your own version that's *SLIGHTLY DEVIATED* [emphasis].” Notwithstanding copyright Fair Use, photographers have the *EXCLUSIVE* rights to control the following: 1) Make *copies/reproductions* of their photographs; 2) *Distribute* their photographs via licensing, selling, and/or sharing; 3) *Publically display* their photographs on web & social media sites; and 4) Create *DERIVATIVE* forms of their images, including different versions of their photographs; create drawings, illustrations, and new media works from their photographs. In your situation, you’ve created an *unlicensed DERIVATIVE work* from the Google-found image. If your copied-version photograph is substantially similar to the original photographer’s, then you’re a copyright infringer! Curious, can I and others take (steal) your personal photographs you post on-line, on websites, or on social media, make minor tweaks to them, and exploit them for money or whatever? Or should I contact you for a written permission license and mail you a check? @MM3OG wrote, “Wouldn't that be totally legal because the image is on public domain and you deviated the image in your style???” *Just about ALL the images & artwork posted to the Internet and found on Google and other search engines are copyright protected - they are NOT in the Public Domain (PD)! However, those US creative works that were first-published before 1929 are in the PD.* On the other hand, Creative Commons (CC) works typically allow you to use them if you abide by their licensing agreement. Just do NOT assume a work is in the PD without doing some research. To use a photograph or create a derivative version requires a *permission license* from the photographer. If you don’t want to pay for a license, use Royalty-Free (RF) or CC images, but double-check to make sure they are truly free to use; some are incorrectly marked. I’m surprised you have yet to receive a letter from a copyright attorney asking for $1,500+ to settle out of court your (willful) copyright infringement (theft) of his/her client’s photograph/s. *Be careful!*

Hmmmm....I'm curious to know why you didn't mention information about using a photo for a youtube video. Is this covered under "fair use"??

I'm sorry to say, this gov site is the worst ever developed. BUT, aside from that, I've copyrighted my songs, films etc since the 70's. Is there a way to find a LIST of all of my copyrights on this website? Meaning I don't have to search each one out. I've put in my legal name which appears on all copyrights, and it seems to just randomly pick ONE of my copyrights. Hoping there is a way just like (BMI) for example which will display all of my published works. Thank you, Joel Justin

If you want to copyright your art, just dont upload it to the internet. -russian

Exactly!!! 😂💯 This is true though because any image that's on public domain on google is technically "fair use" and you can't go after someone for your decision to put on a public domain. That's like voluntarily placing money in the middle of the road and the first person that grabs it you try to claim is stealing from you, the cops would laugh and say you're the one dropped the money they didn't forcefully take it so therefore it's free game lol This is why i think copyright laws are so dumb because there's alot of ways around it and it's impossible to sue the entire world 😂
