Carol, you have a better eye for decorating than anything here. These decorations look as if they chose the most simple decorating styles possible. Your style is far more creative and elegant. I must admit, however, that the gardens are beautiful.

Carole, your eye for color and attention to detail in all your rooms is much more chic and refined. Continue to trust your instincts on color, pattern, style, and period details! Adrian, your construction work and finish details are superb! It appears none of the paintings are covered with museum-quality, UV protected, matte finish glass to protect the paintings from fading. That’s unfortunate, as it would solve the fading problem. Though the gardens are beautiful in their intricacy, they were created for high society “to see and be seen.” I have every confidence you will create a garden in your own style that’s absolutely lovely! By the way, Carole, you look lovely in white (or black)!

Old oil paintings should be without glass because moisture can get trapped between the glass and the painting causing damage. Best to have these types of paintings cleaned by a conservator and revarnished in UV protected varnish. The old varnishes on old paintings back in the day were terrible for yellowing and made the colors on paintings look muddy and completely washed out.

Château de Villandry's theme is about rural nature and of course gardens. So is the decoration of the rooms, you won't find gold or rich Versailles style in here.

No we did not, but Versailles was a bit too far and the wallpaper factory was close by. Having done Versailles few years back, seeing it now, would probably make our chateau look like a peasants hut!!!

@ Sorry, I wasn't saying you're not aware of Villandry's style, and didn't want to compare with Versailles Royal designs. Anyway, if it can help your choice, you may find something interesting by creating a rubber wallpaper with the design of the interior of the Belvédère of Petit Trianon.

Lived briefly in a mansion here in the states that had dark green silk damask on the walls it was almost 90 years old and still looked great the hallways had a lighter color more peach or gold and was not silk still looked ok but was more discolored from age and general deterioration of the fabric. One room was Tapistry and one was hand blocked wallpaper all original to the house the wallpaper looked the worst of the four. My vote would be to use Fabric the curtains hanging in the pelmets will fade much quicker than the wall panels. Think about the galleries in Buckingham palace those have upholstered walls as do a number of other rooms. Fabric will just elevate the walls to keep up with the gold leaf just my opinion. Thanks for taking us along on your tour I love being able to travel along to places I can't go anymore. Loved the gardens The grass with the gravel pathways and corner shrubs would not be that high maintenance.

Thanks for the tour! It looks like it was very inspiring. You can duplicate the look of damask fabrics for the walls with stencils and pearlized paint to give the shimmer of the pattern on top of an eggshell finish on the background. It works beautifully. Nobody will know it’s not fabric until they get up real close, or if the texture of the plaster wall is rough. It’s a lot of work, but worth the look. Ralph Loren paints offers the shimmering pearl finish which is more like an Opal shimmer. Just food for thought Carole because we know you both are capable of accomplishing something which truly represents the level of splendor and elegance your chateau requires and deserves!! ❤

With the issue of silk fading, are there options to put a UV film on the windows that aren't tinted? Or to get silk/fabric that has been treated to prevent fading in sun/moon light? That chateau looks extraordinarily beautiful and I see a lot of similarities. It's interesting to see the fabric wallpaper and drapes matching in more than one room... a bit odd but perhaps that was the fashionable thing to do back then. I would think to make the grounds fancy yet easy to maintain those sections of lawn with the shubs on the corners and crushed gravel as a driveway/walkway could be feasible perhaps? Thank you for sharing the tour with us viewers!

Having the panels as paint-only might be a temporary thing until they find the perfect fabric or wallpaper for the walls, or until they have the funds for it? Also, painted panels can be more easily cleaned as there are lots of sticky fingers touring through the rooms.

I visited the Chateau 3 years ago and agree that is is most beautiful. The ground are magnificent. I was impressed by the large ballroom with the black and white marble floor. One explanation I got for the fabric is that it covers all the irregularities and cracks in the walls plus it is easier to change after it fades and gets dirty from all the visitors.

Carol and Adrian, I truly admire your work on the interior of your chateau. All your hard work and artistry is keeping to the original feel of the chateau. Fantastic work . I always look forward to seeing what you’ve accomplished each week. You two amaze me. Have you considered using multi-layered stencils and varying shades of gray paint to create the wallpaper effect. I am thinking you may be able to have someone create the various levels of stencils using inspiration from the original wall paper. Just a thought since you’re having such a hard time finding the right wallpaper. Don’t give up on your vision.

Villandry is all about the gardens. The interiors less so, as they have gone through pretty extensive alterations over the centuries. Wallpapers fell out of fashion too, in favor of fabric-covered walls. Plus, many rooms are more “art museum” than “furnished home, hence the plainer walls and paneling.

Wow that garden must be such a lot of work! But it is stunning. A fountain would look good in your square feature thing in the garden. 😉 I still think it would also make a great fire pit, with a brazier in it, but maybe they're more popular here in Australia, than in France. 🤷

Trouble is with the lavoir, it's in completely the wrong place, off centre outside the front door, in the shade most of the day and next to the outside toilet, I never understood thus placement

Carol, you are renovating your chateau with far more style and elegance than Villandry. I would love you to be able to replicate the original wallpaper in the panels of your grand salon.

Growing up in a victorian house, we had those brass portholes on the fireplace. They served 2 purposes. To provide a draft that would prevent the room from smoking when you lit the fireplace and it somewhat allowed heat to escape into the room once the cinders were low enough. Mostly we opened it when we lit the fireplace.

Great video. Definitely think you need a fountain ⛲. Sorry Adrian I am with Carol on that and a swimming pool but a tasteful one of course. 😃

The fireplaces where not for fires when the built these. They had free energy heat coming in through them. But about at least over 150 years they took down the cross looking things off the top of the castles. They didn’t want us to know that they free energy then. And that’s the truth. As you see in some older château‘s there are no burn marks or soot in them at all. They were far advanced than us.

Those look like Goya's work in the frames at 5:01-8 or so...seems jarring at some levels, since this building looks at least a couple centuries earlier than the 1850s era yours inhabits...the Spanish-Moorish ceiling insert also seems tipped-in; can't look up the chateau's age right this moment, but maybe an owner was a collector, or...? It's been done more like a museum than an historical house, unless, again, a later owner collected all those pieces and this is the last stage it was left in. The two very different 18th c. rooms--the Jacobean crewel-patterned fabric, on the one hand, and the printed L18th/E19th c. paper (green/pink) on the other (See the SPNEA Otis House in Boston, MA--Jane Nylander's work on dec arts informed that choice, I believe) are also very disparate. It's as if each room has been assigned a character and a period, rather than seeing the whole building as a unified space within which to harmonize more integrated elements from room to room.

Inside and out it's very detailed and has lots of charm and character. I will agree the paintings were super gruesome. That stair chandelier is pretty bland. Carol, trust yourself, you have amazing instincts and can do way better designs. (The super pink on pink with a sky is...just a bad idea)
