When you “look down,” do you orient yourself north or along the fault plane

for kinematics, view the fault - but for regional tectonic significance, the geographic context (N) would be important.

Wholly heck diagraming the numbering system on that graph makes so much more sense than the other videos Ive watched trying to suss out how what strike, dip, and rake represent! Which as a Californian it worries me this kind of geology is not a bigger part of our curriculum. Also, much like how to mathematicians a sphere with a hole in it is called a torus and to physicist its a doughnut, I find it hilarious we Americans call a stereogram a 'beach ball'.....I mean, it makes sense, it does look like a beach ball, just [🙄sigh😏] stay classy, America.... Anywho, awesome explanation, mate! You taught me something new today, on a level I actually understand how it works! I wish I had teachers that explained things as clearly as you have [virtual internet high fives].
