I analyzed data from the UN (link below) to find out where people are moving to and from in the world today. I took all migrant groups of at least 100,000 people born in one country that now live in another, and showed them in the video with a flag ball. All sender countries that have at least one such ball are represented in the video, from the countries with the fewest emigrants, to the ones with the most.
I think it shows a lot about politics and history. But please let me know in the comments what you found most surprising or interesting!

As a Kazakh, I'd like to add a little context. At the 3:43 mark you can see that there is a huge number of people immigrating from Kazakhstan to Russia, Germany and Ukraine. These are Germans, Russians and Ukrainians, who were forcefully deported in Kazakhstan during Soviet times (or their children) and they are now returning back home.

I've heard of Germans and Ukrainians in Kazakhstan, and of course, large parts of the north of Kazakhstan are still inhabited by Russians to this day. I'm curious, as a native Kazakh, what is your opinion of these people? Do you wish for them to assimilate into Kazakh society, for them to leave and give Kazakhstan back to the Kazakh people, or for Kazakhstan itself to become a multicultural state? No hard feelings no matter the response. All responses have valid arguments and are justifiable imo.
@t111ran3

@@daltonmiller5590There are also many nations such as Koreans, Uzbeks, Poles etc. They don't need to assimilate, that's silly. They were born and raised here. I would like to all cultures to be embraced here. Of course, I wouldn't mind if someone wanted to emigrate, but I don't want anyone to actively leave.

Romanian here. Basically the migration is powered by a combination of lack of jobs + the large number of opportunities you have by being an EU member. The migration is not only external, internally most of the people are moving to the bigger cities leaving the rural and smaller cities empty that eventually creates a big hole in the regional economy forcing more people to migrate, it's an infinite cycle that will only accelerate in the following years in my opinion.

South Asia, what I think happened 1)The large number of Indians in Pakistan (and vice versa) is because of the Partition in 1947 when millions of people had to uproot their lives and move to one of the newly independent 2 nations 2)Sri Lanka saw mass migration during its civil wars, when Sri Lankan Tamilians moved to Indian state of Tamil Nadu & other countries where Indian Tamils r populated: Singapore & Australia 3)Bangladesh saw mass migration to India during 1971 Bangladesh's Liberation war from Pakistan and Pakistan's Operation search light prior to that when Pakistan conducted a genocide on native Bengalis. 4)Nepalese & Bangladeshis also regularly move to India in search of better lives and jobs. 5) millions of people from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India work in Gulf Nations in various fields (mostly labour) while many Indians have become neutralized citizens of UAE, Kuwait & Oman. 6) overqualified professionals & millionaires from India moved to US and Canada in search of better jobs .

Not really the case in China. China is one of the countries with the smallest percentage of immigrants in the world. According to the census from 2020, there are less than 850000 foreigners living in China (Not include people from Hong Kong and Taiwan). Compared with the population of 1.4 billion, it's not that much. Even much less than Japan with nearly 2.9 million. And more than half of them are from Vietnam and Myanmar which usually come to China by intermarriage. Actually, less than 400000 of the foreigners staying in China are for work or business.

Yep, Brazil is culturally separate from the continent, we speak portuguese and had portuguese colonization as the others had Spain as colonizer - and our independence is pretty particular (we become a empire by ourselves leaded by a portuguese prince LOL) and very late compared to the Spanish America. Also a brazilian most will look for USA or Europe (Portugal) as a viable opportunity and south americans don't see Brazil as their first choice because of this disconnection (except Venezuelans nowadays, but is the communist Venezuela of today, anything goes - but even for them we are second choice to Colombia). We also had a big flux from emgirants at the early 20 century "coming to Brazil", this is how you end with the brazilian-japanese thing, but we also have big colonies of portugueses (obviously) but also italians, germans and spaniards.

That is very cool! Indeed, there is a lot of "brain drain" in Romania as people are generally overqualified & underpaid (it's common for a Romanian to have Masters level education but be offered 500 euro salary). Most people choose to go into STEM fields while the country itself offers few such career opportunities. Ironically, there is a strong STEM-based education left over from the soviet era. Not super-modern, but still decent. IT & engineering are seen as good professions, closely followed by law & healthcare. Romanian students joke that if you don't want either, you can always study business & hope for a corporate job. And of course, the elephant in the room, the political system. Up until recently, the social-democrat party (basically the "diet communism" guys) used to win most elections. Somehow :) They are known for being exceptionatelly corrupt & opposed to progress. So many people who left were just done with that. There are some ongoing reforms in education, salary structure & funds for business start-ups which aim to retain highly skilled workers. But it takes time.

We used to be global cosmopolitan even scottish, germans, british were there in colonial time, until it isn't. If indonesian fighters weren't being so extreme and emotionally patriotic (i know this is controversial for saying this) killing indo-europeans in our land, we might still at least internationally recognized and get some dutch people moving to our country as immigrants because they feel connections to some relatives. That's the darkest point of our history, effectively killing foreigners because we had "all foreigners are evil colonizers and they must died" mentality while not every dutchmen are evil. My point is, "us vs them" mentality is the reason from this fact alone (Bersiap period, Ganyang Malaysia bullshits). And sad part is, we even hate Chinese thanks to Soeharto's new order and class divisions in colonial time. Our paranoia of losing jobs to Chinese and distrustful towards Chinese that run into our blood since colonial time, it's terrible, that obstructs us to get immigrants.

Literally over 95% of Mongolia is uninhabited by human settlements and it's among the most sparsely populated countries in the world due to it's harsh climate. There's no incentive to migrate there but by the same measure it's extremely difficult, if not impossible for most Mongolians to leave due to how underdeveloped it is (being squashed inbetween Russia and China doesn't help either) then again some folks prefer the simple life. On the brightside thanks to Genghis Khan there's likely millions of people across Eurasia that have Mongolian ancestry and don't even know it.

If you wonder why so many Cubans make it to Spain despite their isolationist policies, it's thanks to the Spanish refugees and migrants from the Civil War in the 1930's and Francoist times. Their descendants have access to Spanish nationality now

So usa, europe and gulf countries get most immigrants. I wonder when oil money decrease how will immigration to gulf countries look as many are trying to diversify like uae trying to make dubai new financial hub in world(informally tax haven) and saudi arabia is most aggressive about diversifying its economy whereas qatar is tapping on gas and tourism

Two reasons: - Brazil have high index of violence, assaults, social inequality and corruption. The image of Brazil abroad is not the best, and no foreigner would like to live in such a country (unless yours is worse). - Language (Argentina have the largest immigrant population in Latin America, although it is less populous than Brazil. Immigrants mostly want to go to a place where they can feel at home and easily integrate with the local population. Brazil is the only country in South America who speak Portuguese, and 9 of our neighbors in this part of the world speak Spanish. Portuguese is a language very close to Spanish, but it's still a different language.

Actually there are a lot of Indonesian migrated to other countries. Many migrated to the Netherlands, creating a huge number of Indo diaspora in the Netherlands. Many also migrated to Saudi Arabia for pilgrimage purpose. Some migrated to Malaysia and Hong Kong to work as labor force (ironically, some migrated illegally). On the other hand, not many people migrated to Indonesia, since our country has a lot of issues that, of course, wouldn’t attract foreign people to live here 😅
