I have to thank Chris Perkins. The first few times I played Dungeons and Dragons, the Dungeon Master had a slow paced adventure with a non-existent story line. I was an English major at the time, and wanted to tell a story with D&D, but the DMs I played with were all together uninspiring. Then I found Acquisitions Inc. Chris Perkins was a revelation; painting a cinematic scene, and playing memorable NPCs(Non-Player Characters). Since then, I have watched, and listened to every Perkins(and all Wizards of the Coast) ran games, as well as read his blog 'Dungeon Master's Experience.' I have DMed well over 100 adventures in less than two years, with only one of them were the players disliked the session(we almost came to blows). In the end, I found in Chris Perkins someone that made me believe in my crazy epic tales. So once more, thank you Chris Perkins, The Dungeon Master.

+crazytaru I know you left this a looong time ago, but as a gamer I gotta know: what happened in the session that made you nearly fight with your PCs?
@crazytaru9 жыл бұрын
+Xel Tanni It was in a different game than D&D. The players were infiltrating a military base without disguises or any form of ID. Two players were good at con/deception and rolled very well to talk their way in. But one of them freaked out on me, because after their roll I still asked for ID. On top of that, most of the players wanted a big epic fight on the base, but the two "face" PCs talked their way around fighting. And, they blamed me for the lack of combat. It was a very bad session, and I didn't play at their table for several months.
@xeltanni89999 жыл бұрын
crazytaru A) thanks for responding because I was really curious about what happened there and B) you do shoulder a lot of the burden of responsibility for the game when you GM.... but, really, credit where it's due. If you have players who futz around and purposefully seek to undermine the story, they only have themselves to blame. As a very long-time GM, I know whereof I speak. You did the right thing letting the social characters attempt their plan but then not letting Persuasion (or whatever the system used) be Mind Control; if a guard has to check IDs or they'll lose their job (or suffer some other life-ruining event), that at the very least bumps the DC up several notches. Some people think that they can get away with anything just by rolling well and having a big bonus, but there are just some things you can't talk people into like that. Anyway the point is I think you handled it well and I'm sorry that your players reacted the way they did, but I'm glad Chris was able to inspire you to keep going. He IS a really good GM and is better at keeping the group focused than I am, so that's something I've been trying to work on myself. His PAX games are a bit rushed, but trying to fit an entire adventuring session into two hours would make anybody's game feel fast-paced.

No, he's using old 4e dnd dice, they had the ampersand on a 1 :) they changed it later to be a 20, because they realised that having people dreading their corporate logo and be unhappy when they see it is a bad marketing move lol

the symbols on MTG spindown life counters are 20s, not 1s, so either he seriously fucked up reading the dice or he was using a different d20 that had symbols for the 1. But either way, whether he was using one or not, you're right that spindown counters are not random and shouldn't be used.

just wondering who in the group posted these videos?
@VitalBlursDnD8 жыл бұрын
+MrMrrome Actually, no one from the group posted these, I did it simply as a fan. I'm not afiliated with them in any way, so these clips aren't monetized at all and no money is being made from them. I just wanted to fill the gap that existed on KZbin between the podcasts and the live PAX shows. I know a lot of people who enjoyed the live shows didn't know that these podcasts even existed, so it was really just an experiment to see if people would discover them for themselves.

I like the DM but hate this ruleset. It's like everything is an ability instead of just bashing with your weapon. Also, the DM should not give them so much time to discuss each and every action. When it's a player's turn to act he shouldn't have the luxury of a 5 minute discussion with his party members.
@JeffGeorge6669 жыл бұрын
I think it's more boring with the bogged down combat.
@xeltanni89999 жыл бұрын
+Jeff George I know what you mean; 4th Ed was terrible. 5E isn't better, by the way. Pathfinder is where it's at in my opinion. As far as the time to discuss tactics deal... eh. While I agree with you and I sometimes even do a countdown for my players if they're taking too long, this *is* more of a dungeon crawl than what I would term a normal game. In fact I think Paul has it completely backwards that a D&D purist wants hack'n'slash and this isn't that; so far both seasons have been ONLY kick in the door style with virtually no chance to role play. My point being that when the game is completely focused on the tactical aspects, letting players discuss tactics feels like it's okay. I would much prefer to do some RP with these funny and interesting personalities (both the characters and players) but Perkins seems more comfortable with action scenes... which is odd because all of his NPCs are interesting and much deeper than most GMs. This is just my first time hearing these older seasons (I only learned about AI a couple years ago and didn't realize until it was said that they'd been playing for 10 years so went and looked these up) and all their PAX appearances involve more RP (as much as possible given the relatively limited time frame of the sessions) so I'm not sure when they move into more character stuff, but I'm ready for it. And done with the crappy 4E they're playing; they all say how much they like it but considering who's DMing I think they're obliged to do that.
@xeltanni89998 жыл бұрын
***** I have to admit that I really do enjoy options and intricate combat where tactics matter and being able to not only build whatever I like but know exactly what they can do. This is starting off like I'm making fun of 4 and 5 E, but bear with me. ^_^ You and Paul are pretty much right when you say that Pathfinder has a lot of detritus and splatbooks and addendums and so forth, but I don't think that takes away from the game. The only time it takes away from the game is when (as you pointed out) someone is *just* playing for the chance to min/max. I believe having so many options (while daunting at first) allows you to pretty much do whatever you like. Plus there IS just a core book and DMG and MM if you want to keep it streamlined, and that is a completely plausible way to go. You don't *have* to use/allow everything into your world. I think that 4 and 5 just streamlined too much, frankly. They turned D&D into WoW, where everyone has an ability like "Battle Slash" or "Ice Bolt" instead of arming people and letting them attack. It may sound like a subtle difference but in aggregate it seriously differs in playstyle. And that's fine. If you wanna just kick in the door and be able to take short rests and loot things, that is a completely acceptable play style. And a fun way to spend a few hours with friends. I'm just of the role play style where describing what you do and having deep characters and needing to think through *how* to fight is just as important as *when* to fight. Not saying either style is "better", but I do mean to say that I prefer the deeper system more, personally.
