Try a real-life Anthony-Anthony Czarnecki at that. This could have been my great-grandfather’s autobiography in song form-although Adele and her co-writer, as far as I know, never met my great-grandfather. Anthony Czarnecki began life outside of the womb as a survivor of the Kaniv Pogrom (If his mother had kept traveling to the Kyiv area, he might have died soon after his birth). His mother and he needed to leave Tsuman’ for Sumeve (“Szumowo” in Polish), and they were estranged from relatives in Lipsk on the Biebrza River because she and his father chose to be hidden Jews to save their lives. He himself succumbed to Depression and PTSD in 1964, having “give[n] up” after a leg injury and unemployment were the last straws-and my youngest granduncle and my great-grandmother were living with him when he jumped off of Falls River Bridge in Exeter, Wyoming, Pennsylvania.
