Short version, for anyone wondering what to buy: -If you don't yet have Viticulture, you should definitely buy the Essentials Edition -If you have only Viticulture and not Tuscany, the upgrade pack gives you some of the "essential upgrades" that Tuscany provides without needing to pay the big cost of a full expansion -If you have both Viticulture and Tuscany, you don't need the upgrade pack, just the updated rules (and you might have to errata your cards / player boards)

@@stevenwang429 I personally enjoy Tuscany a lot, but I know there are people who prefer regular old Viticulture. It's more of a personal preference, so take a look at what content it provides and see if it would be a good fit for you. For me, the expanded board is a bit of a game changer, and the special workers add some variability and can help change the game up every time you play. Also worth noting, the "Tuscany Essential Edition" box no longer comes with the Fromaggio, Arboriculture, or Mafia modules. If you want to get those, you'll have to find an older version of the expansion. That might be difficult because it's been out of print for a few years now, although the designer has floated the idea of printing just those modules into another mini expansion at some point.

I already had the 2nd Edition Viticulture game and Tuscany, but I discovered a benefit to buying the Essentials Edition expansion. The vineyard tiles in Tuscany had the minor printing error on the back giving an incorrect value when trying to buy back the vineyard (the 5 and 7 lira values, respectively). Essentials fixes the values on the new cards. So, it was worth the price to me.

We kind of went on a gaming hiatus for a bit while fostering kiddos, but now they are starting to become gaming age :) A friend of mine I was stationed with in the past swore by the original of this game, so It is now at the top of my go get list.

So clear, thanks for your input. I might be thinking of making this my worker placement game in my collection. Did i see that this game can be played solo? Cause the websites quote 2-6. How does the game cale in your opinion?

I think it's the Essential Edition that includes the solo cards. I see BGG does list it as a 1-6 player game: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/183394/viticulture-essential-edition As for scale, I can't help you there. I avoid offering opinions of the game play experience itself, as I think that's based very much on each individual players taste, and I don't feel I can really do justice assessing that for someone else.

+Hermes Padilla There would be certain visitors that you would need to remove (as some are no longer used in the updated version), but I think for the most part you would have everything.

Rodney, I know this might be a tall order, but can you do a run-through or at least a tutorial on the solo variant. I just got this game in this weekend, and I found the solo variant to be very confusing, especially determining what everything means on the automata cards, how often I should draw a new one, and how exactly to use those bonus tokens that I place on the wake up chart during setup.

I played it a few times. Maybe I can help. I was also confused at first too, but I’ve won a couple times now. Differences from multiplayer version: Set up: Place a glass bead, one on each of the wake-up chart options. You can only choose each wake-up option once. This is your 7 year count down chart. When you take the last bead, you know this is your last round, and last chance to beat the game. During the game, each time you choose a wake-up chart option, You keep that bead to use as a bonus action (taking that middle bonus, as if a 3 or more player game), anytime you want during the game. Once used, return to supply. You are not allowed to use two in a row for exact same bonus, but can use multiple per season if you choose. You start your score on the zero. You start the fake opponent’s on the 20. You have to pass up the 20 before the end of year 7 to win. The fake opponent does not move their score token. It just starts at 20 and stays at 20, and you try to beat that. Last difference. The grape cards: Before you start summer, draw a grape card. Place one of your fake opponent’s workers on each action that is yellow or green, ignoring blue and purple (winter), and also ignoring anything with the “T” icon, symboling it’s for use with the Tuscany expansion (unless you ARE using that, then put fake opponent workers on the yellow and green of THOSE also). After the opponent’s summer workers are placed, do your summer actions you choose, following normal rules. Before you begin placing your workers in WINTER, you draw a new grapes card, and place fake opponent workers on each of what shows up on that card for only the blue and purple, ignoring the summer colors and Tuscany expansion spots, same as above. Sometimes, you will pick a card that requires ZERO workers to be placed in the season you’re entering. This is a good thing, just as if playing with real opponents who end up placing all of their workers in only one season. Hope this helps.

I just purchased the game on Boxing Day and trying the Automa variant. Having fun but needed to watch the videos again as I was making mistakes in the rules - especially making wine out of grape tokens (move token from crush pad to wine cellar - not add wine token to cellar.

Hi Jonathan, I avoid trying to answers questions like that because it's going to vary so much depending on the player, new or experienced. My suggesting is to check out the tutorial video and see if, based on your knowledge of the players involved, you think it might be suitable.

Man, this game is getting a bit bloated and confusing between the various editions and expansions. I'm interested in the game, but I'll probably hold off until I'm positive the "essential" edition lives up to its name and they don't tweak it yet again.

Either get the Original + Tuscanny to get all the content or just get Essentials if you want enough of the game, don’t get the original by itself… same thing happened with The Resistance where they started including content from an expansion
