Randy was more academic if you will perhaps from his mother’s influence through the music school she ran although he had his moments of flash guitar playing but his style was more diatonic IMHO. I love that Vito is making himself available and playing rock again, an excellent player with a good tone. I love his comments on Randy, and like most, no one thought Randy sounded like Ed. He was his own guy.

This is just not true. Randy was incredible, but there is a reason everyone compared the two when Randy recorded on Blizzard of Ozz. The whammy and tapping are completely influenced by Ed. Randy admitted this about a month prior to his passing away. I think many guitar players think they're respecting his legacy by doing the whole "I don't get what people are hearing, they're so obviously different" statements which just are not factual. Even George Lynch admitted that he, Randy, and everyone else was greatly influenced by Ed. Yes, there are huge differences, and I don't think one player is better than the other. To say Randy sounded totally different makes it sound like he played for Steely Dan or somebody. I just wish people would be honest about this topic. Saying that both players were amazing, but had similarities does not slight Randy in the least.

He couldn't get to Yngwie,because is only one yngwieand he was the 3rd innovator after Eddie and Randy. Listen what Steve vai said about Yngwie on Yngwie memoir. Steve Vai: “When Yngwie Malmsteen hit the scene in the early 80’s it was as if a monolith appeared. He was playing electric rock guitar in a way that seemed completely unearthly and had to be seen to be believed. His tone was pristine and powerful, his vibrato, intonation and control was stunning, His harmonic and melodic sensibilities were unique, his emotional investment in his melodies was captivating, and his sheer speed and technical command of the instrument was utterly breathtaking to the point of frightening for some. He absolutely set a standard of virtuosity on the instrument that has yet to be matched. He was a breath of visceral fresh air that inspired the movement of a whole new subculture of music. @@chrisb8655 I think Randy played on Blizzard within the confines, costing and time constraints of what the Osborne team were prescribing. Kind of like every Kiss guitarist following Ace were mandated by the Gene/Paul to sound like EVH, that was the deal everybody wanted up until about 83/84. Diary of A Madman demonstrated more of Randy's own character, and what he was building imo, was more European, exotic and less flashy than Eddie's (Eddie had started to concentrate more on song writing and arrangement by this time too).

I'm so glad I got to see Vito play guitar back in the day. If memory serves me right, the concert I went to was; White Lion, Cinderella and Bullet Boys. I had such a great time seeing them all. On Vito though, I remember his great guitar playing but he seemed crowd shy. He didn't really look at the crowd much and when he did he seems nervous. I don't know if that was the actual case for him, but that's what it seemed to me. Good Times!

Vito is For Sure the unsung guitar HERO of the 80s. Growing up, in the 80s, as a guitar playing kid, I had them all around to draw from, but, Vito had a level of technical playing, theory and note choices that just blew all the others away. It's a shame that all these years have not been filed with music from Vito to carry forward. How great would it be to have him put in an appearance on a compilation album or something with some other players, or doing a cover of one a popular song!

Vito is similar to Eddie and they are both great. They are similar in the way they played rhythm and employed nice chord structures rather than just power chords. They provided color to the songs the way keyboards would. Vito may not be as good as Eddie was, but I think he was excellent due to the textures he provided and he was a good soloist as well. He was better than a lot of the metal guys.

Well finally a guitarist from the 80s scene that agreed with my thoughts on Malmsteen's playing . I don't know how many time I've said in committing that I never really felt feeling while listening to Malmsteen all I saw was speed .I saw Jeff Beck in Lakeland Civic Center (Fla) when I was 14 almost 15 and he played a 90 min instrumental set that was basically all from the Wired Album and you could feel so much feeling in his playing. Sure he could play fast but that's not wat he chose to do all the time .Exactly how I felt after seeing Randy Rhoads live .dude could play as fast as anybody at times but he was into playing with feeling that the listeners felt connected to him .not to mention the unbelievable stage presence Randy had .only guys that had anywhere near that kind of presence on stage was Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page .glad to hear someone that knows that Randy's and Eddie's playing was nothing alike cause if I had to hear one more person claim Randy was a Eddie clone I would scream .Lol

I like that he highlighted not only the differences between Randy and Eddie, but that Randy deserves some credit for bringing a different style to rock/metal through the classical music playing and rock operas that really set off Ozzy's first two albums to make them far and away different from what came before. I realize Randy isn't the first to experiment, obviously, but I do believe he pushed Ozzy in that direction in particular since it played right into Ozzy's madman of macabre persona perfectly. Mr. Crowley is literally a gothic symphonic opera with rock instruments. You could say that led a decade later to bands like Evanescence, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, etc. in a way. Expanding on what Randy was doing with Ozzy. Even Metallica did it too with their S&M album around the same time as these other bands.

I guess what I means that concerts back then were nothing but like having a big backyard party, everyone (including those on stage) were stoned, almost like a Grateful Dead show. Look at the stage props. There were none. Rock concerts was not like it is today. Besides, you couldn't replicate Zep live anyways. When cover bands do it they either use a ton of tech or a bunch of extra players on stage. I saw Page in the late 80s-90s, when concerts were different than those in the 60s and early 70s. He was not sloppy then. Certainly not as much as before. Plus they had an orchestra on stage lol! Speaking of sloppy live.....don't get me started on the times I saw EVH, apparently when he was going thru his bout of drugs and booz. Lucky for him his reputation preceded him. And like Zep before....VH was a party band. The whole show (except for Mike and Alex) was slop (DLR too). But very fun nonetheless.

@doctordetroit4339 There's no doubt drugs and alcohol contributed to the sloppiness, but that has to count against them because some guys were professional enough NOT to cheat an audience. Ed has had bad shows for sure. To me, sloppy is sloppy no matter ERA or reasons, but what a lot of these guys had that makes them great is a distinct tone and sound , you could discern one player from another. A lot of guys never realize that tone unique to your playing is big is discerning the elite from the very good. No doubt bands were using fewer props and certainly finding a way to play something live. Really, Don Arden changed that with ELO, making the stage show huge and using a lot of more recorded tracks...

Yeah Vito, was just great. He recorded the big album , pride i think? In a California studio on a 1961 strat he couldn't put down and man the sounds and tone he got out of it !!!! I think Yngwie (and other shredders) may have influenced Eddie in the same way. When guitar shredding started to become more advanced, Eddie went in the opposite direction and focused more on dynamic song writing and melody during the Hagar era. Personally, I think he made the right decision. Who wants to listen to an hour and a half of guitar shredding? It gets old fast when guys blow their load on every damn solo.

It's good to hear fromVito again, I'm happy he seems to be doing well. I didn't know he'd had pain issues, and that's what made him remove himself from the scene, I thought he'd just gotten fed up with "The Biz" & made a hasty exit. Can't say I was a huge "White Lion" fan, don't know enough of their music to know what songs they do, but his solo on "Wait" was technically on point, and melodic at the same time. First time I heard it, it blew away. And like he said, there was no comparison between Randy & Eddie from my point of view. Two totally different styles Randy using the more classical influences, and Eddie straight up rock & rolling with his own style of two handed tapping. Not to say he couldn't just straight up pick, he most certainly could, but the hammer on & pull offs were his main go to for soloing.

Vito had good tone the songwriting was not great, nor was the band. I get why we compare Ed and Randy but in terms of their sound and style very little simularity

Brought back some cool memories talking about KK. First time I saw them was Point of Entry tour, then, Defenders. It was like 2 different bands entirely but one constant? KK, he was everywhere man, and ripping it. Nothing better than he and Glenn going into their thing, fuck....almost as bright in the head today as it was back then and that's fucking beautiful.... Eddie? Proud to admit, I saw VH same year as Michael Jackson. Also ACDC. Lets just say, at the time? The most popular people on the planet is fair...and each, a one of a kind. i didn't get to see Randy, but we all know his work, again~ apples and oranges. Lastly Yngwie, When he splashed on the scene? absolutely fucking unbelievable!!! No one has ever done this, this way. Complex style of Andreas Segovia? sure, but this? through Marshalls? .. Fucking Hell Yes!... but.....in reflection? how do you say one trick pony nicely? .. Not that it's not appreciated, but, too much too soon? not cool enough? .. If you're from then, ya probably can say it better....I'm kinda high.
