I call this one the 'lost' Stravanganza concerto, because it looks and sounds like it could be part of that collection, and it is also rarely performed. But actually it is part of a collection called "Concerti a cinque" published under the Jeanne Roger imprint in 1717. Three (out of 12) are identified as Vivaldi's, including this one. There is no trace of this work in the composer's personal archive or in Dresden. In my opinion, it must date from around 1710. For Vivaldi it corresponds to a sort of classical period, an âge d'or. Elegance and balance, rationality and beauty: armonia e inventione. I. Allegro (0:00) II. Largo (3:26) III. Allegro (6:32) Composed: not later than 1717 Source: Jeanne Roger No. 432, Amsterdam, 1717 [Concerto VI] Harmonie Universelle, ‘Concerti per violino’ Florian Deuter, violino solo e direzione Mónica Waisman, direzione Eloquentia EL 0815

Thank you once again @Del Vivaldi! Wonderful upload of a rarely heard but not by any means less beautiful and interesting early concerto. I agree that this concerto sounds a lot like those of La Stravaganza, especially for the very simple thematic material of the Tutti (similar to that of Concerto n.1) and the rather large (and a bit predictable) use of 7th progressions in all the three movements. However, the whole work seems more archaic in the relationship betweem Solos and Tutti than the Stravaganza concertos and one would wonder if if might predate them even by a whole decade or so (meaning that that it could have been written before 1709 when Vivaldi lost his first appointment at the Pietà).

@@giuseppegullo717 You are quite right! I was thinking mainly of Op. 4 nos. 1, 4 and 9, probably among the earliest of the set, although the first and second violins have a much greater rôle in those three. Here there is no independant first violin part, only violino primo (principale) and secondo. But in that sense, an economy of means does not always mean ‘early’.

One user has found a concordance with Grosso Mogul and I have spotted one with RV 212. That's pretty "canon".

This piece gives me Biber vibes, in particular the opening bouncing rhythm at 0:17, reminiscent of Biber's 'Sonata Sancti Polycarpi a 9 voci' for trumpet ensemble.

Vivaldi might have written hundreds of times the same Concerto, but it's so gorgeous I still listen to it whenever the KZbin Algorhythm suggests it to me. (And by the way, that claim is a complete hoax.)

Stravinsky said Vivaldi wrote repeatedly in the concerto form. Dallapiccola said it was same concerto over and over. They both were wrong.

Nessun vitalismo casanoviano.
