This set is, despite its misleading early opus number, very much the work of the mature Vivaldi, now 40 years of age and a leading light of the vibrant Venetian musical scene, producing at an astonishing rate not only concertos for the adroit pupils of the Ospedale della Pietà where he was a much-loved music master, but also entertainments of varying scale for more public events and audiences. These sonatas are but for two or three performers, or even four: a moot point for musicologists. L’Arte dell’Arco follow modern scholarly practice in assigning the ‘accompaniment’ to the virtuoso solo instrument to a continuo group of cello, keyboard and plucked instruments, though they take care to offer instrumental colours as variegated as possible by alternating between harpsichord and chamber organ, and theorbo and Baroque guitar, as the character of the musintal craftsmanship, continually appears to demand or request it. The sonatas were written with publication in mind, not in Venice but Amsterdam, then the home of instrumental music publishing, and they take their place within his carefully constructed 12 opus collections as a sophisticated set of sonatas displaying all the different characters of the Italian Baroque school of instrumental craftsmanship, continually enlivened by Vivaldi’s unique brand of melodic genius.

Vivaldi and Mozart have something in common. Both were famous virtuosos who ultimately sought their fortunes in Vienna, died pennilessly, and were buried in unmarked city graves, the exact locations unknown to this day. Exactly 50 years apart -- Vivaldi in 1741, Mozart in 1791.

The difference is that Vivaldi was a complete and greatest master of his time and of all times... He met fame and got old for the time (six decades, of which only the end was obscure). Already Amadeus had around him musicians much more capable than him for the positions (Viotti, Clementi, Salieri etc.)... When he was reaching the level, fate extinguished him young.

He was known as "The Red Priest " Antonio Vivaldi. He was greatly admired by Johann Sebastian Bach 😉 It has been documented I believe that they never met formally😀 They knew of each others work and respected each other 😇

The Red Priest: il Prete Rosso! (Google translate! 🤭) Bach purchased or was given 12 Vivaldi concertos in 1723 and learned about concerto writing and other aspects of music from Vivaldi. He transcribed some of the Vivaldi concerti for harpsichord and strings. Bach's BWV 1065 for 4 harpsichords, a favorite of mine, is Vivaldi's Concerto for 4 Violins. They are both here on KZbin. Links below. A fantastic concerto! I like both versions! I love both of these composers, but I've only been to Bach's grave in Leipzig, Germany. Probably one of the best qualities of Vivaldi aint all those but the fact that he had the ability to make his music easy to listen to while not being plain... Classical music is not a genre that a lot of people can actually listen for a long period but Vivaldi tends to be a whole different thing at that ;)

Perhaps! I discovered Bach through a friend when I was 23 or 24. 8 listened to it constantly between Leon Russell, the Allman Brothers, Aerosmith and ZZ Top! Now I listen to baroque music almost non-stop, but I have my Beethoven and Mozart as well (and my Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc.). I'm 67 now. I would never turn my back on classical music. I wish my parents had been more sophisticated and had given me this no music when I was a baby.

I am the proud owner of the Vivaldi edition, this is but a brief excerpt. I encourage everyone to get the full 66 CD Vivaldi box, hours of unexplainable audio pleasure. I also have "edition" box sets of Corelli, Telemann, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, no regrets.

Caro Albrecht, è proprio peccato che Vivaldi sia vissuto quasi 350 anni fa, e che non abbiate imparato insieme il violino! Povero perdente Vivaldi, non ha avuto la possibilità di conoscere, forse un vero maestro tedesco ! Senz'altro ne aveva bisogno. A parte il sarcasmo, saggiamente, ritengo che una critica attuale non è corretta, in quanto, non si può fare un paragone, per tanti fattori.Un solo esempio: oggi contro 3 secoli fa. Se si conosce F.M. Sardelli, che sa tutto e di più su Vivaldi, si diventa poi più saccenti , anche sul periodo barocco.

Kind of like Stairway to HeAven in 1972__it got played so much that you blocked it out. Hearing it decades later, it really is excellent. This Vivaldi is fine; like hearing his material I haven"t heard.

I am a violinist and would like to have the music book to practize it. It is similar to Corelli`s sonatas. (I have already got the music books, in every case partly). I was a mistake that I have not yet bought the book with Vivaldi`s sonatas. Bt maybe it was expensive or I had to buy new strings and the money I had taken with me was not enough for all. (I prefer to buy music things at a oldschool music shop).
