lol... for about 30 seconds you will. Then pain will set in because your modern cello's strings are tighter... you know this though ;-).
4 жыл бұрын
@@BetterMe981 Hi. I've been playing in a baroque orchestra for the last couple of years after finishing my cello studies, and I must say that holding the cello in the way shown in the video, as if it were a viola da gamba is not painful at all and you get used to it pretty easily. It being in contact with your legs also changes the resonance of the instrument, which gives it a more baroque-like sound. Also, the different of posture has nothing to do with the tightness of the strings as you suggest. I play with metal strings instead of gut strings, since baroque is only a part of my repertoire. However, my stand partner plays with gut strings and, although they have a different sound and are more sensitive to temperature changes, they are not that different to play technique-wise. Have a nice day.
@BetterMe981
@BetterMe981 4 жыл бұрын
@ my comment to Payton L was a playful response (easily recognized by his "lol" and my ";-)." It was in jest, acknowledging the playful silliness that one would actually not just hold a cello like that for one piece, unless they were very experienced. To your other point, I respectfully disagree. I'm a professional cellist on both modern and baroque cellos for over 40 years. Metal strings, gut strings, posture and the setup of the instruments has everything to do with each other and pain. Our bodies become conditioned to the different styles of holding the instruments. Pain can most definitely present itself if one's body is not used to the style and different string tensions. There are books on the issue, as well as courses at university level. As you grow and learn, keep in mind that your experience isn't everyone's. Happy, healthy playing!

Everybody has showered praise on the two cellists and the orchestra by calling the rendition magnificent, extraordinary, bravismo, etc., and so naturally I have no scope in writing a better comment! Meanwhile, I will take my time out to contact some retired professors of English to craft an excellent comment. In the interim if I write that the rendition was fantabulous whether it will be regarded as an affront by the two cellists! I do not have the faintest idea.

Can we just appreciate for a moment that the cellists are not using their endpins? They really went full baroque on this one with the bows, bowholds, strings, and of course, the endpins. As a fellow cellist I can attest how much more difficult it is to have to hold the cello up with your knees.
@commontater8630
@commontater8630 Жыл бұрын
What is the case, musically speaking, for playing without endpins? Such things as the type of bow used have an obvious effect on the music (obvious to a violinist at any rate), but I can't say the same for the lack of endpins.
@lulcy789
@lulcy789 Жыл бұрын
@@commontater8630 without an endpin you can only use as much weight as your knees can hold into your legs and you’re also more free to move horizontally because you’re not anchored to the floor. The cello also ends up being more vertical as opposed to the more horizontal angle some cellists play with using endpins. So it changes how the cello is played and how you have to approach playing it which makes the music and style more similar to the cello playing vivaldi would’ve known

Angry Fish this is baroque music. In the baroque period, cellos didn’t have endpins which are the long sticks at the bottom. That’s because they didn’t need to shift so much. Today, cellos shift a lot so they slant their cellos with their end pin. They’re doing it to be more historic. Hope that cleared it up. :)
