It is worth quoting Dan Laurin's opinion about RV 441 (it can be found in his personal website as a comment on his BIS CD with the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble): "The C minor concerto for alto recorder and strings is one of the reasons for me playing at all. The legendary recording by Frans Brüggen from the late 60s’ was on the turntable in my home many a time before I finally understood that this was the same instrument as I was playing myself. In 1972 I bought the music in London, and I have been practising this, the most demanding Baroque recorder concerto ever since. When I play it in public there are bars that still bring tears in my eyes…"

Wow! two videos in one day! Laurin is simply one of the best recorder players alive! And I am so glad that this concerto by Vivaldi was not lost just like his set entitled “La Francia,” “La Spagna” and “L’Inghilterro” which still remain lost. I do hope they are found in my lifetime if they are still around, or perhaps they are 'mis-attributed' and a clever baroque sleuth will find them.

In a recently discovered letter dated 5 May 1741, Vivaldi mentions La Francia, l’Inghilterra, L’Olanda, la Germania, la Spagna and L’Italia. It was a set of six!

When Franz Bruggen first performed this concerto some 50 yeas ago, he probably was the only one to be able to play it. Now there is a good dozen excellent recorder virtuosos who seem to effortlessly play this very difficult piece. The flautino concerti have more rapid sequences, but the c minor key requires complex fingering. One wonders for whom Vivaldi wrote it, as it must have been an outstanding player. Presumably, however, in Vivaldi's time the tempos were significantly slower than today. The stunning harmonic sequence in the first arpeggio solo of the third movement is unique to ALL music! Another Vivaldian "coup"...
