Possibly contemporary with RV 562(a): on the reverse of the last folio of RV 120 are notated the first sixteen bars of the second violin part of that concerto. I. Allegro non molto (0:00) II. Largo (2:05) III. Allegro (3:32) Composed: c. 1713-1717 Turin source: Foà 30 Les Violons du Roy, ‘Concerti for Strings’ Bernard Labadie, direzione Dorian xCD-90255

I adore this piece! The first movement is the perfect introduction-the atmosphere is tense and bipolar. The mods changes constantly, and in the second movement, Vivaldi brilliantly used the first few notes’ pattern to create a collage of longing, intertwining melodies. The emotion is so deep. But then the third movement, an intense fugue, defies all stereotypes about Vivaldi! Contrapuntal, original, and intellectual while still retaining Vivaldi’s signature “attitude”-some might even call it “sass”-a combination for one of Vivaldi’s greatest movements of all time! And when the amazing theme came in the major mode in the viola part at 4:15, a horn emerged from the drama in a triumphant moment before descending back into the darkness of the organized chaos, which is really just another name for the exceptional form known as the fugue.

You wrote it better than I would have. The only thing I can add is this: I agree!

Bellissimo. Vivaldi dimostra non solo il suo virtuosismo ma anche le sue abilità in contrappunto con un bellissimo fuga.

It’s somewhat unusual for Vivaldi to begin a piece with a compound metre, let alone compound quadruple metre in any movement! I wonder why Vivaldi often saved quadruple metres for last if he did use them (i.e. the finale of his Concerto in B Minor for Four Violins from Opus Three).

It takes about two hours to put a short one together. Yet it is said that Vivaldi could compose a concerto faster than a youtuber could upload it.

Curious how much of this work resembles passages from music in the galant and even by Beethoven’s time.

Vivaldi oferece mais fluidez a sua textura fugata, a dinâmica de terraços fica mais interligada.

The first movement can be more introspective and lyrical if played a lot slower, as below at 33:47. One can hear all the parts clearly: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaW0eYinnbuKbsk
