Far too gushing, reminds of the original VR reviews that got me into VR, "I don't notice the screendoor", "It's so immersive, I feel like I'm there" bla bla bla, all total bullshit. I would guess your original Vive review would be just as gushing. The problem with reviews such as this they are only relative to someone as an enthusiast with very low expectations and tend to be very subjective rather than objective. Yes you finally mention a couple of flaws but they are almost hand waved away and you don't even mention the elephant in the room, the price! Finally I wouldn't buy this if it was true 8k, the price is obsene, especially in the UK, £800 just for the ehadset? HTC can get fucked and then some. You come across as a shill TBH. I will wait for the higher spec Pimax 8k or even Goggle next year.
@DerSolinski6 жыл бұрын
Dan Brown do you know what almost every reviewer also said? Try it your self, not something to buy blind. Also I think his review is very accurate even so I hadn't a chance to try out the pro myself. And since this device isn't marketed for consumers I think the price is justified.
@Muckylittleme6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, it is on the consumer market and is clearly a consumer product but I don't see that as relevant to the price anyhow. How is it justifiable? Over $1,100 dollars just for a HMD which frankly is little better than last gen? I won't be buying and I think anyone who does will have severe buyers remorse within 12 months. This is HTC trying to rip people off because of lack of competition while they can. And what a big F*ck you to original buyers, hey you can get a small upgrade for $800. HMD's like the Pimax need be only half decent to blow it out of the water and they will probably be a lot cheaper too!

@TribalInsticts the reason some surfaces looked flat is because normal mapping does not work "well" in VR. Normal-mapping can make a model appear more complex and be affected by lighting, but it's not actual geometry. So, when you have a stereo image (when using VR) your brain can calculate that it is a flat surface. When seen with just one eye (or when playing a game in a monitor) you can't understand that and normal-mapping works as intended!

Graeme Evans yeah, that's a plus but to me the god rays are a bigger problem for me. I think everyone is different when it comes to what bothers them or if they notice at all. Fresnel may be better for pupil swim as well. What i do know is that between the Rift and Samsung Odyssey, the Odyssey had much fewer "god rays" but had a much smaller sweet spot. On the Rift the god rays are more like a smear than rays. I keep wanting to clean my lenses but nothing is there. 😒
@dekoomers6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The god Rays are a deal breaker, When it happens it just takes you out of the immersion. I really do want more high res screen, But that also needs to be paired with improved lens.

I got my Vive before my 1070ti arrived and tried it with a 750ti. The Lab worked perfectly fine as long as the chaperone was not visible and opening the system menu killed it so there is definitely a problem with the steam menu and chaperone system. I don't notice it anymore with the 1070ti but I don't like the idea that the chaperone could be causing performance issues.

78% resolution increase seems pretty substantial when considering your eyes are so close to the displays.. Are you aware of the 'advanced settings' addon for the Vive? You can change waaaaaaay more than you can on the standard settings. The graphics capabilities of the original Vive are unbelievable, and reading text is no problem at all if you just turn the graphics up. Obviously, you need a PC to back it up, but it's not all that of a hindrance and you can play around and tweak it to suit your computer.

@ArminNoroozi6 жыл бұрын
Hey @TribalInstincts ... Regarding the frame drops, have you tried overriding the video resolution? This section is new in SteamVR and it automatically sets the resolution for you based on your GPU (and perhaps the rest of your hardware). For me it gets automatically set to 230%. This means, each eye will get rendered at 2293x2548 (instead of the default 1512x1680). To change it, on your SteamVR app, go to Settings -> Video -> Manual Override. Try and restart the game you are playing after applying the override. Most games (including SteamVR Home) need to be restarted for this to properly take effect. I'd like to hear what the results are (perhaps in a video, rather than in comments). It is always great to see your videos when you cover everything in detail. Cheers

A note about those headphones: tried the ones from the Deluxe Audio and some other - quite expensive - models out there. Do yourself a favor and get the Philips Fidelio X2 (got 'em for 150€) You won't believe the audio quality on those! Everyone that's tried them (VR or otherwise) was extremely amazed :-) And yes, they look and probably are a bit on the heavy side, but I play VR with those all day long. They are super comfortable! The only downside: they are not super-tight on your head, meaning too rapid movement can lead to you re-adjusting them. But I guess because of that you can literally wear them for hours :-) And because of their 50mm drivers, they can produce - if you want - massive amounts of clear, brutal bass :D But as the soundcard software-equalizer obviously doesn't work on HDMI sound, you need a software equalizer; use 'Equalizer APO'. Needs to be configured only once and it works autom. when you start your Vive (or Rift for that matter). Cheers!

What about the tracking with others headsets? The vive used laser triangulation.
@johnbrown91816 жыл бұрын
@John theux The Rift uses computer vision from two or three (sometimes four) external cameras, named Constellation. When properly configured it has the same tracking accuracy as the HTC Vive. Windows MR tracking uses internal cameras to detect movement. From what I've heard, it isn't as good as Constellation or Lighthouse.
@ComdrStew6 жыл бұрын
My son has the Dell and you can not tell any difference on the head tracking the difference is in the controllers. The controllers has to be in front of the cameras to be tracked correctly but it does track for about 5-10 sec when not in front of the cameras. Lighting is very important on the WMR, too much or too little will mess with the controller tracking. My son has tracking problems in his room because his ceiling fan is right above him but when I use his headset in my space the tracking is about 90% as good as the Vive it still messes up now and then. What the controllers need is a camera in them also to track the world around them just like the headset. The big thing with the price of the Vive Pro is looking at the next gen headsets if HTC is selling a stand alone headset for $799 what will the Vive 2 be priced at $1199? This headset should have been $399-$499 and to me is only worth that amount.

I have the Samsung hmd (same screen) and it's awesome for car sims. The only down side is that you get less frames which can cause issues. I have a 1080ti and it struggles in project cars 2. Still I have a lot of settings fairly high. Assetto Corsa looks amazing and yet it tends to get me motion sick. So I think frame rate are suffering, but visually it's awesome. I would think you could turn the graphics to a lower level to get good frames and minimize the issues. The contrast, colors and resolution are by far better than any other headset. Either way I have switched to this headset for sims and my oculus sits on a different computer.

Thanks for the quick review of the headset. I'll be honest I pre-ordered the Vive Pro ($1050 here in Canada) and I'm going back and forth if I should cancel. My main reason for the purchase was the bump in resolution. Do you think that is enough to justify the purchase? Is it that noticeable or is it something you barely notice? Hmm ya that's what I was thinking to. I have a feeling there is bigger things going on. I think HTC knows Valve is releasing their knuckles controllers sometime this year and they also make the tracking. So instead of trying to compete, HTC is just going to be making the headsets and bundling them with either their original controllers (wands) or with the upcoming valve knuckles. It's too odd of them to be so quiet on the details here and the fact they did no innovation to the controllers on this refresh.

I think we are going to get foveated rendering in a year or two and at the point will be able to bump up resolution even farther. I am going to keep holding onto the Gen 1 until something better releases. Also controllers drastically need upgrades, vive's suite coming out with Gen 1.5 is no better than Gen 1. The trackpads just can't hold up to the heavy use, analogs are better although they aren't good for intuitive menus. We need a cross between a tracked glove and a controller.

Nice first impressions! :) I don't think I've seen you play racing or flying sims but if you have project cars 2 or elite dangerous, it would be great to get your reaction to how much a difference the vive Pro makes there. :) especially with distant cars in pc2.

Hi im really interested how the vive pro compares to the the vive for brightness and contrast. The vive pro seems to use the same screens as the Odessey, and from reviews the Odesseys screen its less bright. Is that the case with vive vs pro? Also does the contrast compare? Usually an increase in resolution = more contrast. Thank you!

I heard that there's a hidden usbC in there, couldn't you just use a small usbc-to-usb and connect it to the Vive-and-chill? And for the cable, could you please tell me if it's longer than the previous vive?

Gotta agree with everyone else, $800 for only the headset is just insane. If they through in the next gen controllers and sensors, then it would make sense.

how is the native resolution vs supersampled resolution in the regular VIVE?
@brandon92716 жыл бұрын
Harry Kuvert not as good.. Because you can supersample the Vive Pro too ;)

Sure but it all comes down to what your computer can handle ;)

Harry Kuvert Native resolution, will always beat out supersampling to a lower resolution. Supersampling, is running the content at a higher resolution, than the display can display natively, then using that better picture to downscale to the lower resolution the display can actually show. Better to run at that higher resolution, and then display that higher resolution natively.

Id be more interested to know if super sampling on the pro makes much difference at all.

There is no way those headphones totally covered your ears unless you folded them to squeeze them inside the cups. They’re on ear design surely?

What about the mic? Sadly the mic on the gen 1 is ass, any improvements there ?

Definitely going to hold off at that price. Really thought HTC would award early adopters with a reduced price/trade in ability. Will probably pull the trigger on a real Gen 2.0 around the same time I update my rig, Same way I did it when I purchased the V1. My PC kicks ass but 800 bucks for this? No thanks.

looks good, can't wait to see more. shame about the usb port. you can get some pretty small phone battery packs that u could strap on and a doubt the vive n chill uses much power.

I am a bit confused why people are complaining so much about the price...its like they just got into gaming or something. premium costs more
