1) I haven’t watched the full video, but at 1:28:00 in the video the interviewee says that if a child has less than a particular percentage he advises the parent to just enroll the student to a (lower) institute. The interviewee further clarifies that we all should have a realistic expectation of ourselves. He adds for example he would not compete with the interviewer for a Hindi exam because the interviewee knows that his Hindi is weak. I would like to add that I wanted to study science/engineering but my percentage was low. Friends and family advised my mother to enroll me in commerce or arts, but I explained to my mother that my physics chemistry maths marks were good, but I lost on percentage because of my marks in languages, and I recall maybe history/geography. My mother stood by me and I passed the IIT entrance exam. 2) Earlier the interviewee mentioned that the entrance exams are unfair to people who cannot afford coaching. I agree with this because the syllabus of the state board does not 100% match the syllabus of the entrance exam. For national entrance exams such as the IITs, if the state boards modify their syllabus to match the entrance exams, then the need for coaching institutes would be reduced. My parents sent me to coaching classes even though we were financially not well off.

Amazing episode, incisive, insightful and informative in equal measures. Mahesh is a great example and a role model to show how a puritanical approach can give real world solutions that work on the ground. He is steadfast and anchored on his ideals and does not wear it on his sleeve all the time to flash in front of the world, listen how nonchalant and clear he is to the mention of how he feels to be tagged as an activist. Any narrative needs to be built on facts backed by a deep understanding of the subject and driven by a passion towards a goal and that’s what Mahesh shows. It was 1 hour 57 minutes of refined knowledge, distilled and delivered for anyone to understand with ease. He does not resort to lofty and radical ideological paradigm shifts to explain how the education system can be enhanced for a better outcome, this can only be possible when one has grip on the facts at the grassroots. One facet that always intrigues me is the fact that given the humongous numbers of aspirants for miniscule seats for higher education in premier institutions any framework of evaluation has to be fundamentally rooted in some objective criteria if it has to be transparent and free of any subjective interpretations, but as Mahesh explained the present format of objective transparency does not take into account accessibility and affordability and in other words a level playing field for all everyone, that to me is the elephant in the room, addressing that would be a great way to evolve the system to the next level.
