All these experts saying poor technique. Hahaha. She has had a great career singing over twenty years. Just because you don't like her, say so. Every singer figures out the way to sing for themselves. Their body, vocal cords etc. She figured out what works for her. Great I say.
@baritonebynight2 жыл бұрын
The same was said of Bartoli who's technique is unorthodox...it works for her and she learned that technique from her mother and has always sung that way. Her breath support is much higher than the way that the old Italian school teaches...yet she sings things nobody else can.

I don’t think it’s so much the vibrato she’s having trouble with. It’s firing off 5 16th notes in one bout that’s getting the best of her! 🤣😂 But damned if she didn’t pull it off! If you were just listening and not watching, we’d probably be none the wiser. 😉

Viveca Genaux is an artist of the highest order. I've seen her several times recently in concert in San Francisco and Berkeley, and her voice is even more spectacular in person. Contrary to many comments below, her voice is improving with age. It has an amazing range and sparks with a thousand colors! She is just entering her prime. Brava!

I love to see this video before going to sleep :) There's the same concert of Vivica - Agitata realized in Köln. But, in my appreciation this is the best :) Not just the movement of the lips, How she can give life the partiture so preciseley! Bartoli is precious yes, but L'Agitata for a Mezzo sounds stronger. Bartoli, doesn't risk anything in the word "naufragar", Vivica does, she doesn't hesitate in mantaining the sound of deep desperation of the "due venti". I like it a lot. THANKS Wienerfr!!!

Thank you for your kind post. I was lectured last night on Caffarelli practising before the looking-glass to eradicate 'ugly grimaces'. I still maintain, as you yourself do, that the sound and beauty of the voice are the most important aspects in singing. Based on that criteria, Madame Genaux is magnificent.
Sounds like a high pitched dog voice barking. This is far from grace. Now I remember why I don't like this period of music.

Compliments for Vivica Genaux for this extreme difficult aria.This lady is IN FULL CONTROL,both regarding voice and with the orchestra.Bravo! I am deeply impressed. P.S. How can there be 134 negative comments?These voters only pay attention to what they see and NOT to what can be heard.They are clearly outsiders.Pity they can give their negative opinion when it is not right. Why don't they "play" elsewhere and criticize non-classical singers(e.g. Patricia Kaas). Vivica Genaux is a genius.

The most wonderful voice and timbre, great agility, and great balance between her chest and head voice. Such a level of mastery anyone with ears should able to hear how comfortable she is in her production. Nevermind her facial movements, they are not tricks or vocal tension, but just a habit/byproduct that frankly should be none of your concern.Anyone who feels clever saying "vavava" i would invite to listen without looking. You are being fooled by your eyes, it's obvious listening to it that there is no consonants thrown into her coloraturas whatsoever. If you can't use your ears, I don't know what business you have commenting on an opera video frankly.

@Serinia4melodic aha, true, it is easier for a lot of people, and it is for people who either can't do vibrato from the diaphragm but mostly it is a lot more noticeable as it is much stronger in the sound of it, and thats why a lot of people use it because 'normal' vibrato can often be left unheard so a piece sounds rather empty

Not bad at all... Ok Still more enjoyable than most that I have heard. While Cecilia Bartoli's rendition is my favorite, this one is so close... As for the"musical technicians" that know everything, I say to you: WHAT MATTERS IS WHAT WE HEAR AND HOW WE FEEL ABOUT IT. PART (IMPORTANT PART) of quality is in that. I give you an example: La Callas vs. Renata Tebaldi. Tebaldi would never miss a note, but Callas would. So, wby is Callas above her? Because she understood that Opera is SUNG THEATRE. Not just a concert thing. And how this transposes to Bartoli?... She REALLY knows what the spirit of bel-canto is! THE SOUND OF IT! NOT the notes, not the composer's written redition, but what the WHOLE performance entailed: how it could elevate both the singer and the audience to a higher level of adhesion and unison.

@MrOliverRich The coloratura is just fine. It is just being produced with a good bit more tension than she needs to do. Her lips don't just spazz when she's singing coloratura -- high-sustained notes are equally affectuated as well. On a side note, diaphragmatic coloratura (continuous-panting as opposed to only when changing directions) can be equally damaging due to the changes of speed and temperature of air being, literally, pushed over the vocal folds.

Looking back over a long career in music, I'd say that technique is a means to an end. Here, I think the "end" is would be a musical, beautiful, artistic performance. None of the artists represented on u-Tube perform this flawlessly, but certainly give us some beautiful moments.Techniques are also what make us able to get through the music without damaging our bodies. Some give us one kind of artistic satisfaction at the expense of another. I love all those here for their crowning moments.

@LOperaBuff Mouth vibrating and jaw/lip warbling are two entirely different things. The jaw warble is caused by jaw and basal-root tongue tension. Lip warbles are usually done by too much tension or holding in various parts of the face. With the way she usually covers her upper teeth and has to force her lips open to bring open the sound in non-middle ranges, I highly suspect the lip gesticulations are caused by upper and inner lip tension. And there are, at times, DEFINITE "v" sounds.
@tedmacat11 жыл бұрын
Those lips. I don't understand why that needs to happen. She sounds beautiful and her coloratura is very accurate and lovely, but that technique doesn't look at all pleasant and I'm sure it makes those difficult passages harder than they have to be.
@telucis111 жыл бұрын
Goedelite Kurt I was a paid singer for many years in NYC specializing in Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. I also studied voice and was coached in performance practice during these years by internationally known singers and coaches. So much for the qualifications. I agree with tedmacat and don't understand the lips. It is not a technique that I'm familiar with nor do I believe it makes the difficult passages any easier. Although in general I like this performance I far prefer not only Cecilia Bartoli's technique but her interpretation as well. This performance borders on mechanical.
@jeanpierrelegac296111 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. This movement with her lips is not very elegant. apart from that she sings very well.
@rigdonbabybean11 жыл бұрын
I'm a mezzo-soprano and I would bet her teeth chatter is compensation for not being able to support the trills with her diaphragm (very common for skinny mezzo's or altos). If you literally don't have the 'body push' the singer has to compensate in other ways. Just like I have to compensate when I sing contralto pieces - mine is to almost 'sing-spiel' the note to power through it. But trills is another matter altogether. You must punch them with the diaphragm. It's obvious she is unable to do that, thus flappy bird lips!
@rigdonbabybean11 жыл бұрын
telucis1 I'm convinced it's compensation for not being able to support the trills with her diaphragm (very common for skinny mezzo's or altos).
@kristijangrdjan60317 жыл бұрын
It was obviously a matter of practice because here she performs the same and does not make barking expressions. Her voice is beautiful and I can only listen to her earlier performances, but not watch her because I cannot concentrate on the voice. It reminds me of a barking dog and I cannot stop laugh. But I suppose that in the meantime, aware of the problem, she found the way to compensate for a different and more elegant way. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqWkiqyjg7Bngrs
