I'm glad you've done this, because I really feel like people truly forget just how BAD VAR has been in sense of the decision making, long before the Liverpool game. Decisions that could've impacted the league so much, from title wins, top 4, relegations. I really dislike how many are discrediting the other incidents that aren't the Liverpool one. Something needs to happen, as more is bound to happen again.

@@Vizeh Oh I mean a cultural issue within the PGMOL. In this case, it's their reluctance to make themselves accountable. If the audio of the decision making process was public, for example, they couldn't get away with such a chaotic, incoherent response. Listening back to that Diaz audio - it's so all over the place, the error was almost inevitable. But the technology itself is sound.

VAR is fine as it is. It is the referees that are the problem. They are human, so they can make mistakes. It is the magnitude of the mistakes and the increasing frequency of them that is the problem
@Vizeh

Aye, the expectation of a perfect system is impossible however the Liverpool mistake was incredibly poor
@stanettiels7367
@stanettiels7367 11 ай бұрын
I agree fundamentally, but I do have some pushback. Humans are inherently imperfect and will always make mistakes, so with a ref and two linesmen, the potential is there for three people to make a mistake. Adding a further two-three people to the equation just increases the potential for even more mistakes. I can’t remember a time before VAR where we were constantly talking about refereeing controversies. There’s a controversy on a game by game basis - even with the technology. Ultimately I just think VAR has taken so much away from the game. The spontaneity, the drama. People could understand refs and linesmen making mistakes in real time. Even though people will gaslight and say there was chaos. Yeah people would be angry in the immediate aftermath if a bad decision was made, but for the most part it would blow over within a day or two. People accept that humans are fallible. Of course there were some howlers where clear onsides were ruled off, or some clear penalties missed, but the controversy was never this bad. People just accepted it as inevitable human error and moved on. It’s more inexcusable now that they have the tech there to supposedly stop the errors but the tech is being operated by fallible humans.
@BiggestBirdonMars
@BiggestBirdonMars 11 ай бұрын
These issues only come up in England Other countries dont have this issue And the drama and spontaneous things in football you talk about are still there You need to remember why VAR was brought in the first place cuz bad calls were given which would not have been given with VAR I'd rather pick the right calls being given than drama and spontaneous incidents occurring even though the right call was not given You say that the push back from the public will go away after a few days but the result of that mistake will still remain Remember Henry's handball against Ireland?? The push back went away but the result was permanent The epl needs to do better in its use of VAR that's all there is to it VAR is the best way forward

I'm glad you posted this video on KZbin because it goes to show how bad VAR is being run up to this point. One of the worst decisions for me is when I was watching the Sheffield United vs Tottenham game in June or July 2020 (I can't remember the exact date) and Lucas Moura was in possession of the ball blistering past the defence and falls over, accidentally handballing the ball in the process and Harry Kane strikes one past the keeper in the Sheffield United goal. VAR overturns that for the accidental handball by Lucas and to this day I am still baffled by that decision.

As a Manchester United supporter I am the furthest thing from a Liverpool empathizer LOL, but I can absolutely agree they have had some shoddy calls their way like many other teams. This is supposed to be the “greatest” league in world football, why is the officiating so poor when it comes to VAR. You have a camera that can replay and analyze the game. Why are the professional officials letting this nonsense happen and have such poor officials on the VAR. Apologies won’t provide the goals back or cards being dished out. This needs to be changed immediately. Anyway, much love from the states really enjoy these video essay type vids.

I think the big clubs get the worst decisions both ways, like United consistently don't get penalties they should, but that Onana thing in their first penalty was also something no non top 4 club would get IMO. The pressure gets to these guys too much and I think no one wants to be a ref, so if they get replaced the competency won't improve. It's a tough position.

There was a game in Brazil, where my team was drawing 4-4 away. There was a cross, and the other team's striker raised his hand up high, like he was going to, IDK, hit it like a volleyball. VAR officials said "natural movement" and didn't award the clear as day penalty. I've not watched another match since then, and I don't intend to anytime soon. The game ended on a draw, which could and should have been a win, and would take us closer to first place, where we are in a 4 way title race. Disgraceful...

Me and my family discussed the Liverpool goal at length over tea. My sister reckons it needs to be replayed. But me and my brother in law argue that there are hundreds, possibly thousands of decisions have been given wrong due to human error over the years (take your pick, missed handballs, missed offsides etc - I'm still salty about Lampards ghost goal in 2010) and none of them got a replay. The only difference here is who the fault lies with. I predicted early that there would be massive cockups causing things to not really change all that much and this game proved it.

We know so little of what happens behind closed doors and down backstreets. We're also dealing with club owners and senior officials who are invariably psychotic, hyper-competitive and narcissistic. Anything is possible with this lot. As an LFC fan, we've been lucky and unlucky with VAR. As a supporter, there is always a sense of "Everyone/someone is out to get us." Yet, on the same weekend United had a blatant handball denied with VAR. Something truly stinks and we're not entirely innocent. Is it simply VAR officials have been "Got at," whether it's by clubs, bookies, sponsors? With all of the money involved, are certain officials going with the club offering them the bigger kick back on the day? I'd start background checking the lot of them, and finding which ones have bank accounts in Luxembourg or the Caymans.

West Ham fan here- as much as we were on the end of one of the worst decisions I think our VAR luck has balanced out. Don't think this is the case for everyone though- obviously Brighton have been mentioned. Feel like the top 6 sides (particularly Man City) are given the benefit of the doubt against smaller teams. Rarely are Man City/Chelsea denied obvious penalties against the likes of Wolves but it definitely happens the other way around (surprised Brighton V City wasn't on the list). As for some general VAR thoughts- surely it would be better for the VAR officials to call 'offside' or 'onside' instead of 'check complete', then they are confirming the correct decision. Thought the semi-automated system for offside during the world cup was very good (think they used it in the women's euros too?). Lastly, I think it should be a review system for most decisions (except offside) as generally the on-field referees do a good job, and the odd howler would be picked up in a review system. Feel this is more in line with the original intent of VAR (clear and obvious). Great vid as you get so wrapped up in your own team and biases you don't see the bigger picture (and quite what a mess it is). Sorry for the essay XD

In major international tournaments, the VAR was even questionable and it might be better to see this: 1.2018 World Cup Final: That France's first goal should not be happened because Antoine Griezmann had actually dived instead of being fouled by Marcelo Brozovic. Then, there was a penalty, where Ivan Perisic didn't actually touched the ball with his stretched arm inside the box (just like Gerard Pique doing the same thing during Chelsea vs Barcelona in 2009 Champions League semifinal at Stamford Bridge). 2.Euro 2020: The semifinal between England and Denmark is obviously disgrace. Denmark should have won that game because there is no indication that Raheem Sterling had get fouled just like Antoine Griezmann. 3.2022 World Cup: Japan vs Spain game, where Ao Tanaka scored the goal that eliminated Germany after the ball from the previous player had actually gone out of play from the goal kick.

Well made video, mate. Regarding the Diaz offside, we're now in VAR's FIFTH Premier League season, and they're telling us they have never had a protocol in place where the onfield and VAR refs are demanded to use short, clear and describing words regarding the decisions? Darren England was only one little "onside" or "not offside" away from disaster. The following situations were not mentioned in this video, but Liverpool's Curtis Jones and Chelsea's Gusto recieved a red card in respective matches after VAR intervention. We can discuss whether or not they were correct decisions, but I don't care as long as consistency is being maintained. Then Kovacic performs a studs up tackle versus Arsenal, which frankly could've and should've been a red if compared to Jones and Gusto, but after a VAR check, the onfield yellow still stands. Then Kovacic does an almost identical tackle shortly after, no card recieved. How? Remember the pre-VAR days. There were errors everywhere, but many of them was easier to accept because offsides are difficult to call during swift plays, and the ref might not have a good angle during a tackle. And in that fog of human error, it's easy for corruption to sneak in. The VAR gave me hope of transparency, a chance for viewers to kind of police the refs. Instead, the rate of wrong decisions seem to be standing still, despite the help of thousands of camera angles. What I demand is for more transparency - whenever VAR is checking anything, put real time VAR audio and their analysing screen, up on the TV screen for the world to see and hear. Also, they need to make changes to the rule of "play has continued, we can't do anything now" for blatant errors like the Diaz offside.

As an American Handegg fan, refereeing bodies admitting they made a mistake is just fucking wild. Bad Ref decisions are made constantly, because the on-field personnel missing a blatantly obvious call, it falls into the "Not enough video evidence" when there is clearly enough video evidence, or there is good old fashioned bias toward one team because the League's offices are in that state and there are future monetary decisions to occur. For there to be audio (god forbid mention the fact that it was publicly released), where you can hear them make the right call, it get ignored by accident, and then hear the dude's heart implode as he knows him and the referee team fucked up in real time by letting play continue...it's beautiful. Disagree with the title of the video, but like the review of the incidents (even if I don't agree with the conclusions). The biggest problem is the need for clear guidelines for when VAR ought to be applied. It sometimes seems like VAR caters to the whims of week-to-week pundits -- sometimes it is involved too much, and fans cry for it to let the field stand... other times, the reverse. There must also be clear communications between the officials -- there's a reason why Air Traffic Control and pilots have readback for all instructions.

The picture on google of the VAR room at stockley park clearly shows two screens for each VAR operator. One screen for the live game and one screen for VAR checking. Its almost as if they are not both in the room at the same time. Remember that you never hear the assistant VAR speak at any point during the line drawing process. Is he on his way back to his seat (i.e from the toilet) when this is happening and then when Darren England says 'check complete' Darren England goes off somewhere. Also when Dan Cook says 'thats not right Daz', Darren England sounds very distant with his reply of 'What?' If the headphones are wirless then this is more than possible.

The issue with VAR, and how people perceive mistakes from referees, is simply because, referees back in the day could make mistakes often.. People were angry, but they somewhat understood it, that’s genuine human error (or bribery in the case of Barcelona) Now when these mistakes happen WITH VAR, people don’t understand, because they have replays and different angles and they take the time to get things right… and then they don’t. They still make the mistake. VAR is being used the wrong way. We need consistency, not “clear and obvious” turnovers! I’ve honestly had enough of hearing that saying, clear and obvious. Makes me sick. Black or white, and even the grey area decisions, everything is going down the drain because of their insistence of using VAR the wrong way. The thing I hate the most however, is how the media handles it. The league, the FA, VAR, they are all in bed with the mainstream media. Nothing is genuine anymore. It’s all political correctness, trying to justify horrible changes to football that we know are all about money at the end of the day

Couldn’t agree more. There has definitely been pressure applied by The FA, Premier League, PGMOL or all of the above for the broadcasters to downplay the tragic errors. Watching games and seeing a massive mistake only for commentary to brush past it with hardly a comment. Like Gary Neville saying last season that the standard of refereeing in the country has never been higher than it is today. Broadcasters, at least in my opinion, have been told to create a narrative and downplay the errors. It’s insane how often they just brush aside clear blunders and bad officiating with hardly a discussion. Whereas before they would have been all over it and making a stink about it.

Can I say that "the VAR problem" is one I've seen mostly in the Prem? To be precise, I'm Italian and watch mostly the Serie A and the Prem, and do not know if other leagues experience the same trouble with VAR and the refs that manage it, but in the Serie A this problem is close to non-existent (one of the grave ones I can think is the disallowed goal for Juve last year agaist Salernitana in their 2-2 draw, but aside that nothing like the troubles that the Prem has been having). Maybe the solution is to better train refs to use the VAR, both onfield and in the VAr room? Since as a Serie A fan, I can say that it has been mostly helpful not only for refs but also to fans to understand the why behind the decisions given. Also, I cannot fathom why the offside lines are still drawn by a human and the automatic offside technology (which is fully working in Italy and is a godsend) is not used. P.S.: Sorry for the bad English Edit: I've also discovered that there is a series on the italian DAZN where refs that officiated games are called to explain decision and how the VAR is used, and it is pretty interesting how long calls are ususally due to confusion between the VAR refs to allow the onfield ref for additional review. Maybe let the refs discuss more? Who cares about more additional time, the right call should always be prioritized.

The worst VAR decision I have seen was when a player on my local team took the ball from the opposing player's hands, and he held his face and fell to the floor. VAR then took a look for serious fowl play for the player who took the ball. His hand was nowhere near the opponents face. Edit: I forgot to mention that the player who took the ball only got a yellow card, but it was still very ridiculous.

As you mentioned vizeh, 'a clear and honest error' is a justification for looking into various incidents, but if var interprets any error as 'clear and honest' then they'll check everything. That is where everyone's view will differ.

I love when they watch it in slo mo. Thinking that the player had time to move faster than the speed of sound to get his leg or arm out the way. Watch things full speed as well as slo mo, dont rush, use all angles. The money sloshing around, this should work no problem.

I'd say the red card Fabinho didn't get at Brighton for raking his studs down the back of Ferguson's leg in the FA Cup. Or the perfectly fine goal disallowed for 'handball' and obvious penalty on Mitoma not given at Spurs. Or the clear penalty at Villa. Or Estupiñan's disallowed goal at Palace when the VAR operators 'drew the line on the wrong defender'. Any one of the five that Brighton got an 'apology' from PGMOL for last season basically.

VAR is great as it is, the referees and the people behind the screen are the problem. Not the system itself. VAR finally pressured the referees in Greece by putting them on the spot for their decisions. Before VAR, it was a complete travesty with referees obviously paid to support a certain team in the match and we even had a massive scandal about it. LONG LIVE VAR!

He has a right saying that he would want a replay. People can bring up all sorts of examples, from "God's hand" to your local backyard Championship offside ruled onside, but those were human mistakes in the moment. Not malice. Not making a mistake, seeing you made a mistake, KNOWING you made a mistake, 4 other people seeing you made a mistake, only 1 person calling it out, and still not doing anything about it. "The game has restarted, nothing we can do." Man, they sometimes whistle play dead 30 seconds after it restarted just to check for a penalty. It has happened numerous amounts of times before. This was almost weaponized incompetence. From the VAR1, VAR2, 4th man, and the referee. Except for VAR3, Oli. Thanks Oli, for keeping on demanding to stop the play.

What is irritating about this situation is that people think Liverpool and whining and they should just accept it. But infact it's the opposite, if nothing is done about clear corruption incompetence ,it will keep happening. I mean from that match alone, another official just came out saying Jota should not have been sent off. There has been so many instances such as City's handball vs Arsenal, Cucurella hair pull,United's offside goal at City's ground and so on. But we all know nothing will change,instead the FA will keep fining anyone who calls out the Refs and still protect them. I get it is a hard job to be a referee but it is getting riduclous and it has constantly been like this for pretty much every match-day in the last few years.

Var is a problem because it has huge drawbacks we accept because we expect that important refereeing decisions will almost always be correct. It robs so much emotion out of goals and the game in general, and to make this worth it, it almost NEEDS to be perfect. But it can never be, and it hasn't improved refereeing that substantially for it's drawbacks being worth it in it's current state.

Another big thing they could do is apply fines to the refs that get wrongful VAR decisions. And harsher fines for repeated incidents. It feels like the refs have zero consequences and only give out apologies afterwards. Even more impactful; the points lost/won by the end of the league can affect whether a team qualifies for European football and the profits a team makes

I feel they don't even look from the same angle sometimes, because from one it can look offside but is actually onside. I'd expect the lines to be parallel to the goal line and drawn to where the players were. Sitting as a spectator, I am often questioning how they reach their conclusions. That and how they determine what, precisely, unnatural hand placement is because there are times when the position is wholly natural in the movement a player is making.

Why people say that the PGMOL "apologized"? They haven't apologized (at least to Liverpool), they just recognize the error. The same way that Klopp didn't say he wants a replay, he said that it should've been a replay, but he acknowledges is not going to happen. Context is important. I don't know if they actually apologized to Wolves, or the other teams the other times the PGMOL fucked up, but at least to Liverpool they haven't.

VAR should work best for decisions which are objective - the ball either crossed the line or it didn't, you're either offside or you're onside. Both of these things can be automated. Where it starts getting messy is in the many subjective decisions which need to be made throughout a game. The PGMOL are clearly aware of this, which is why they brought in the 'Clear and obvious error' criteria, but even then what actually is a clear and obvious error is at its base subjective. Take offside players 'interfering in play'. There are some players in an offside who are very clearly interfering in play - maybe they're stood in front of the goalkeeper and blocking his view - and there are others who are very obviously not - maybe they're stood on the far touchline nowhere near the action - but in between those two points is a grey area which two different people can see in different lights. Inside that grey area, can a decision ever truly be deemed to be a 'clear and obvious error'? This brings me on to the other problem, which is that by bringing in the technology the expected standard is raised. Before, when a referee did or didn't give a decision I think fans were more willing to excuse it, but now everyone expects perfect decisions because they've got the technology and footage to make a more informed decision. However, many aspects of football remain subjective and you constantly hear disagreement from ex-players, pundits and referees on certain decisions, so there's some aspect which it will never be possible to get perfect. At first the answer appears simple, use VAR only for those situations which can be automated, as these are the ones an objective decision can be made, and give some of the power back to referees for subjective decisions. The problem is though, that some serious foul play, for example, is objectively so yet can be missed, so should VAR ignore those decisions, accepting that you'll never get everything right so it's better to allow a portion of error so we can stop talking about VAR all the time? Or should it be able to interject when it's objectively the wrong decision. I think this should have been the point of on-field reviews. You give the referee the angles he didn't have before so he can make a better informed subjective decision. The problem is that on-field reviews actually amount to 'look, we think you should have done this but you'd better come over to the screen to sell it to the fans and players'. Plus, this can be influenced pretty heavily by slow motion, which often makes incidents look worse than they were in real time, and still images. Ultimately, I think the best course of action is to use automated goal line technology and offsides, and then with other decisions the VAR can only suggest an on-field review which is played back at full speed - possibly only when it's a decision which the referee didn't see like one which occurs off the ball. In an ideal world, VAR would be able to help the referee come to the perfect decision every time, but we don't live in an ideal world and as you say in the video, the technology is only as good as the people using it, who are never going to be perfect.

So far the worst decision I've seen was during a Juventus vs Fiorentina for the 22/23 Serie A, and the funny thing is it wasn't an "incorrect" call. It's uploaded to KZbin in the Serie A channel. Watch it and you'll understand what I mean. Juventus was winning 1-0 and in the final minutes a Fiorentina player lobbed the ball to the Juventus' box where two players, one for each team were disputing position. The Juve player ended up clearing the ball doing a bycicle kick. The ball flew to a Fiorentina player waiting outside the box, that shot and scored the equalizer. VAR called and after minutes of waiting they showed that, Ranieri the player disputing the ball at the start of the play, had a slice of his heel offside. The underlying of this call made me worry, because, not even kidding, no person in the stadium, or watching the game on TV, could ever have guessed there was an offside position during that play, and such a ridiculous one. And it makes you wonder if VAR would have intervene if the roles of the teams involved were switched. What I'm saying is, they could easily call stuff like this all the time in favor of the big team, and ignore it when it happens in favor of the smaller team. And no one would never take a guess.
