It takes a lot of work to outnumber the afflicted but you got them beat 10:1 this is very fun to see.

Thats more or less how I gwammed my ranger. Also if you put an pet attack in the bar of the mercs the pet fight initiation works way better cuz sometimes pets need like 5min to initiate into combat lol

I think because they aren't attacking is why the pets don't initiate. Not a huge deal cause my bow hero's pets initiate pretty fast.
