+Yannik Baltes If this is bad enough imagine Réminiscences de Don Juan which is usually played terribly by those brave enough or Mephisto Waltz #1. As it is, at the time Liszt had been criticized as writing music that "only he could play". Of course good piano technique is more commonplace nowadays but with Liszt he kinda blurred the line between exceptional brilliance and virtuosic showoff....

Yeah Actually Liszt was unable to get through the entire piece. His hands were to small. He even had a surgeon cut the webbing between his fingers, but was still only able to reach 1 octave. The source for this information is from the museum at Liszt's home and from Valentina.
@Marathonracer
@Marathonracer 8 жыл бұрын
+tenor 5454 That's nonsense. Valentina referred only to his failure to attempt to make this his bravura finale but many people misunderstood her, so she clarified it later. Here's a much more accurate description of Liszt's hands. "Perhaps a large contributing factor to Liszt's affinity for extreme technical difficulty was the structure of his own hands. An original 19th century plaster cast of Liszt's right hand has been reproduced, and is now held in the Liszt House at Marienstrasse 17 (also known as the Liszt Museum). The plaster cast reveals that while Liszt's fingers were undoubtedly slender, they were of no exceptionally abnormal length. However, the small "webbing" connectors found between the fingers of any normal hand were practically nonexistent for Liszt. This allowed the composer to cover a much wider span of notes than the average pianist, perhaps even up to 12 whole steps." There are even a couple of photographs of Liszt showing parts or his hands and fingers. They certainly were not small and his fingers look a bit long, if anything. One report said he could reach a 13th. Do you actually think that the greatest virtuoso pianist of his time couldn't even play his own music because he couldn't reach more than one octave even without the webbing??? LOL.

Yes, Chopin admired how Liszt can sight-read pieces even for the first time he sees them (and can play it as if he's heard it before even when he didn't). A skill Chopin wished he had. But Liszt too admired Chopin for how he can write and improvise pieces in the most "romantic" way. I like them both btw :) But in terms of music discipline, I'm more on the Liszt side, more on the technicality.

Ryan Farrel I don't really have a definite source/book but search on the internet, the story always goes the same :) They were friends/rival on the piano. Chopin even dedicated his Etude Opus 10 to Liszt.

Such a lucky person! She so clearly just enjoys performing; doesn't matter that the piano is not a Steinway grand, and that this upright is giving a slightly saloon-like sound to this piece. But Lisitsa's just having a good time giving people some great music.

Insanely fast in parts.. wish I had long fingers like this. I am always amazed how the concert pianists memorize such long pieces. How much time and dedication is put in to master this piece. All of this on an old piano... how it must sound on a Bosendorfer or the like. Just incredible talent!

I like the idea that there are professional photographers and cameramen there just hanging out all day, waiting to film random strangers playing this street piano. And then, "oh, wait, who is this totally random person sitting down to play the piano!??" lol Obiviously she wasn't just hanging out, waiting for the train, killing time by playing the random street piano. :) But of course, a totally awesome performance by a professional piano player.

So, let's figure out the scene... you're passing through this place, fully crowded, with an ear at your cellphone listening to the last crappy bull about your work, or whatever, then you hear someone playing the piano in a different way from the usual street artists.... you get closer, and you discover Valentina Lisitsa who's having fun on an old piano, just for the joy to do it... When you recover from the shock, what is your first thought ? Please, describe !

What amazes me most on these pianists is the MEMORY for so much pieces. The easyness to memorize these pieces. See, it´s very difficult to memorize even say...100 easy pieces, but having all memorized and ready to play. Some of these pianists have big repertoire and it doesn´t seem to vanish.

Just imagine the extraordinary *memory* that she must have to remember this one and all other pieces that she knows, apart from the playing ability, obviously. Those were +10 minutes of the most confusing and fast combination of notes possible. And now imagine Listz himself coming up with that thing in his mind for the first time ever... What the heck was he thinking when he got inspired to construct that maze of rhythm? Amazing.
