Karnatic music is of course devotional, because their creators created them to propitiate Gods and Goddesses. But Bhakthi (devotion) is not the only prominent concept behind such creations. Ragas involve all human emotions, the ‘navarasas’. TNS sings this raga at a slow pace and if it evokes divinity in you, it is well and good. But one thing unforgettable is, singers of the olden genre sang these ragas almost in the same way, if at all any difference was there, it was in their voice. Do not connote Yesudas singing a cinematic raga, because such a thing is not there. In karnatic music there is ‘Monodharma’ and you can go to any extend, but confining within the limits ‘Raga Bhava’ and ‘Thala’. Yesudas, because of his vocal capacity may go to any extend perhaps beyond your imagination. Though he is reputed as a play back singer, he has played a vital role in familiarizing Karnatic Classical among the modern youth. It is as clear as day light. It is a great achievement also.

Most of the singers sing this in low pace because for singing in higher pace or speed one requires vocal chord capacity. Yesudas on the other hand has a better voice culture and can easily sing in all the sthaayis with ease. Thanks to the GOD gifted voice and hard work he has put in. As you said he was instrumental in popularizing karnatic music especially among youngsters.
