Just discovered your station this evening when I recognised Kenny Everett. You've won me over. It's great to hear a local shorwave broadcast again. Looking forward to tuning in on some homemade valve regens.

GREAT WORK DAVE! Can't say loud enough how stoked I am to see those channels in service!!! All that nice old gear working and sounds great on air too... Some times Newer is -- JUST NEWER! As soon as I saw the your cable roll... Aha it's LMR400 or Belden 997 (leaning more towards Belden) don't quote me on the model number. But yes TOP OF THE LINE for less loss (Capacitive Cable Loss) in the RG213 type coax cables. Loss at 2mhz would be more of the Ohmic Resistance type. Not so much the Cable Capacitance type. At 2mhz its more for the same reason you see speaker cables are really thick for Pro AV work. 5Mhz it would be starting. Any decent length you should still run LDF450 minimum. I still believe there is some more signal we can get out of you. I'm looing at the Doublet for use here. Cheers Buddy!!

Thanks Stu....great to see the current setup, quite impressed...I bought a Diamond WD330 to put up mainly to do listens to both frequency's haven't done that yet been a bit lazy. My Telefunkin 2525/3 arrived the other week, just waiting for a 7/16 to N adapter and high powers meter...LP-700 to arrive. I have an oil tin can load for tests.

Basically nothing has gone wrong after 18 months of operation so far, the valve stuff is very robust but have got a few standby transmitters in case. Built some solid state transmitters but the saving in power use is not that much but will use them if the mains go down and can run them on DC from solar or batteries.

excellent work. How do you power up the station? Solar panels? Generator?
@vk3ase

We have mains power, thankfully it is an RF quiet line but i have been collecting second hand solar panels and hope to set something up to offset the cost particularly when i get solidstate transmiters.

100w can travel a fair distance, I’ve received 100w MW stations from 2000km away. I would love to receive Shortwave Australia here in Finland! Somehow I think that won’t happen though 😆

@@vk3ase Roger that, DJ. My property near Masset, BC off the NW coast of B.C. Canada has lots of big, tall, trees, but they are mostly spruce trees. Very dense branches, so anything launched tends to get caught in the thick web of branches/needles and won't come down. I've tried the slingshot method. Works sometimes. Mostly, it's the old fashioned way of a long ladder, then inching upwards towards the canopy. I've toyed with the idea of a quad copter as a possible solution, too! I'll have to check more seriously your 2 transmitters. I have heard 4835 here, but not 2310, but it's more for lack of trying, rather than not being possible. I used to love listening to the Northern Service ABC shower service on 120 meters. Always came in super well here.

Certain times i think you might detect it. When the Australian Broadcasting Corp had the frequency's till 2017 and ran 50Kw both channels were often good strength into Nth America and Europe. Wwcr Nashvile 5k up from me on 4840 is often strong here and gives an annoying hetrodyne to some local listeners but they are on 100Kw so 30db stronger than me.

Why does VK2 ARNSW AM broadcast on 7146khz has better modulation depth than your shortwave ozztralia on 4835khz
@vk3ase

You would have to compare similar program material received with the same signal strength and signal to noise ratio to make a valid comparison. They are mainly concerned with speech so could compress and clip it to an enormous extent and still obtain good clarity and many Db in increased perceived volume but would sound crap on other types of program material. I am constantly modulating to plus 125 percent and occasionally hitting zero on the negitive side so the mod is fairly heavy. Some of the music is of the nature that it will always sound soft no matter what you do to it unless it is pushed so far it sounds ridiculous, just the nature of acustics.

@MidlifeRenaissanceMan

@@phoneticauit’s much easier to get speech compressed with a much higher average volume, versus music which relies on dynamic range to sound good. AM will always be a challenge for music If you listen to older recordings on vinyl from the 50s and the 60s, they were often mastered for AM broadcast and sound sonically different from mid 70s recordings mastered for FM radio. Lots of fun

I totally agree as it is a completely useless activity but so is spending your life looking at a screen as most people do today. At least i am using Australian allocations and the Chinese's may be less likely to take them over. Also i have learnt a lot about propagation and antennas etc. Searching for program material i have vastly increased my knowledge of music and other things so personally it is a plus and maybe just maybe i have given some one a bit pf pleasure.
