When I was 9 or 10 years old back in the early seventies we had a copy of George Dobbs Ladybird book on making a transistor radio. I didn't know he was a keen Radio Ham then because I didn't know what that was, it wasn't until many years later that I realised the Reverand George Dobbs G3RJV was responsible for that book which helped to ignite an interest in radio for me and my friends

A great inspiration Peter. I hope this encourages many to build and experiment rather than buy. The use of the metal thumb tacks and the wire wrap around the inductor are superb lessons. 73

I always had this idea of wrapping around inductor. But in jewel thief it don't work. For radio freq it works brilliently

I like it. A great project for kids to build to learn about radio. Thanks.

Nice one Peter 👍. That drawing pin idea for construction is really good. So long as you have some drawings pins, piece of wood, a soldering iron, wire cutters and some salvaged compnents, that's pretty much all you need to build a working receiver.

Great video. I would suggest using stiffer wire for the feedback loop so that it doesn’t tend to spring back after adjustment. The 3.3pF capacitor could be made by twisting together 2 insulated solid core wires then snipping to length.

Oh and for the 10 turn winding you could put this on a short piece of drinking straw then thread the inductor through the middle to avoid using very thin wire

Cool beans. I built a regenerative receiver 15 years ago. Worked great, but lost it. Have wanted to build another and could never find the original plans.

Interesting circuit with two transistors. Try spiderweb coils, regen control like a Crosley51 tube radio.

Thanks for sharing this Peter. I also enjoy designing analog circuits and love learning from others. Please confirm how the AM detection (rectification) works as I'm not 100% certain. Is it that Q1 is conducting only on +ve half cycles thanks to the delicate (and quite elegant) -ve feedback DC bias via the 100K resistor? BTW I can see why you don't use a smoothing cap as it would clobber your RF regen feedback. Is it fair to say that the signal in your regen feedback 'coil' is a half-rectified (-ve portion) RF? I imagine there may be a small amount of +ve portion if the rectifier is not perfect? I did think of a way to add reflex to this circuit but I think it would mess up your clever rectification scheme. What I thought of was reducing the 1000uF cap to 1uF. Now, the rhs of the 100K resistor would have AF on it which would be fed-back to the base of Q1. Ergo reflex. But I think the audio feedback might modulate the RF input at the base of Q1 and we'd end up with a motor-boating shocker of a circuit! I thought I'd mention it anyway! 🙂 Thanks again for your highly instructive videos. One day I must share my designs also.

Very simple and yet effective... Can i tuned it to receive aviation band & amature bands.... I would love to but have not any frequency counter... Any ideas how to tune this one

This receiver is unsuitable for that, except for possibly the 160m ham band. See my other videos and website for details of receivers on other frequencies including airband.

Peter, which of your books would you recommend for an experienced ham and QRP kit builder to just get more of that VK3YE creativity?

None of my books have much in the way of circuits. My books cover general beginner topics for amateur radio, QRP operating and QRP antennas. My website at vk3ye.com has more detail.

Could it possibly be converted onto SW? (41, maybe 49 meters or even higher?)

Possibly but would need far better mechanical construction for frequency stability and better control of regeneration.
