chat ok I'm gonna be promoting a band rn cuz gatekeeping isn't swag :D so I feel like nobody talks about an ACTIVE visual kei band called Mathilda (it's written in Japanese but you can also find them this way). they fall into the menhera kei and kirakira kei subgenres (kirakira "sparkly" kei has a mainstream friendly sound, using glamorous costumes and makeup) and my Internet stopped working vefore I could look up a solid definition for menhera kei but it should be easy enough to find!! there's many other subgenres of Vkei (oshare kei, soft kei, etc) that you should look into if you don't know them already!! and PLEASE check out Mathilda, my favorite song by them is their 4th modt popular song (last I checked) called #kawaii!!

Im no expert, but I'll try my best Visual kei is both a fashion style and musical genre originating in Japan, being most popular in the 90s. I'll explain the fashion style and music sperately Visual kei fashion came along with the music genre, and can be compared to j-punk. Some main components of the style are lace, jeans, plaid, skirts, layers, chains, arm warmers, cuffs, bracelets. There's both a more elegant Vkei look, such as that of Mana Sama, and a more punk vkei look like that of Miyavi. You can also tone down Vkei a bit believe it or not, such as Arimura from Plastic Tree The music is considered under J-rock, and there's many different subgenres of Vkei that have their own attributes. Some of these are Soft kei, Kirakira kei, Kotekote kei, Oshare kei, and more. These can also be tied to their own variant of the clothing style as well as the genre, and you can look into these if you please. Some Vkei bands I like are the following: •malice mizer (not on Spotify... •gulu gulu •mejibray •deviloof •mathilda •dadaroma •jiluka •the gazettE •lareine •buck-tick And these span across many genres, from Mathilda's flashy, colorful Kirakira kei to Malice Mizer's elegant, neoclassical Tanbi Kei. This is only a short summary, but Wikipedia, the Aesthetics fandom page and many other online forums have a lot of information. Keep in mind, however, that some definitions have changed with time and between the east and west so you may find some conflicting info I hope this helped

Visual Kei is a musical genre from Japan initially derived from 70's and 80's glam rock. While it does not have a certain sound to it, the artists are usually dressed very flamboyantly and express themselves with unique outfits and extravagant makeup.
