I have a Lossnay.. overall its been great but just one big issue ..my neigbours both have open fires.. and on the cold winter nights when they may use them the house can quickly smell smoky so I must turn the Lossnay off- It takes air in outside air and combines it with some inside air(from the family room in my case) and then heat exchange occurs in the main unit i believe.. so you really you must have clean air outside your house IMO..yes there is a filter but the smell of wood smoke still gets through from outside your home. On very cold nights the lossnay will introduce colder air from outside and mix with warmer air inside but the temperature will tend to be lowered indoors This can be countered by using a heat pump at the same time,, but we dont want heat pumps running all night long ($$) so I turn it off so the house temperature wont be brought down(with the down side now of potentially damp windows!).. on hot days it will tend to raise the inside temp bringing in very hot outside air..usually I can cope with this. Did talk with a Mitsi rep a couple of years ago who didnt really have an answer on the smoke smell thing

What you said was kind of obvious... also that's why open fires have been banned here where I live, air gets unbreathable some days with high air pressure. Of course it's gonna lower temps, but you get fresh air , if it's smokey air just turn them off

That sucks. I'm sure if you push the air through a few charcoal/carbon impregnated filters it should filter the smell out (in a custom inlet plenum box, before the MVHR unit). I'm looking into getting the VL350 - how is the noise of the unit itself, is there any? Any vibrations? Are you happy with it, sound wise?

That sucks, but remember the product is supposed to bring "fresh air" from outside, which it then further purifies, in order to freshen your house by eliminating polluted air. In your case, given your environment, your house seem to have way cleaner air inside than the burned air from outside, which obviously makes this product not suitable. It's literally the same as with a car ventilation system, it's supposed to bring inside clean and purified air from outside, but when you go in an industrial zone or there's really polluting vehicles in front of you, the only solution is to close the vents until you exit that area, otherwise you will bring polluted air in the car.
