Well, you're not from the area. Otherwise you would know these things. 😉 But yes, the material is good. And it's very true. There was, literally, a forest of impaled Turks. So, yea, In fact, everything said for Vlad and his btutality is very much real ant true. Just for two reasons---the impaler was cruel, but it wasn't just him, the times themselves were like that. In medieval Europe, people, I mean civilians, fought in the squares all day, every day, often to the death. Violence was a daily occurrence. It was something normal. Everyone was like that. So the impaler was just a typical image of ruller those years. The impaler descendants live at the English Court today.

I have no Romanian blood in me, but even I see Vlad Tepes as a true 15th century hero. The tactics he used against his enemies in the battle field doesn't mean anything to me. He was a cruel, barbaric and vicious warrior, but he also lived in a cruel, barbaric and vicious time period. Vlad the Impaler was a product of the time period he lived in.

To me, Vlad is one of the most influential people in our World's history. The combination of "true" history, myth and legend that surrounds him and his actions over the course of his lifetime are amazing, especially when you consider just how small the region he controlled actually was. As a student of history, I've frequently tried to employ proper historical jurisprudence in reference to Vlad III. One cannot deny the context of his life and his juxtaposition against the vying powers he was caught between. When faced with a powerful kingdom on one side and one of the greatest empires of history on the other, much that is written about him has been biased one way or the other. We'll probably never know much more hard facts than we do now. Regardless, Vlad III will always be my favorite historical figure and I salute Romania for being able to claim him as theirs.

The most honest account of Vlad's life I have seen so far. Bravo. I like the way when you don't know, that is what you state. I like the man's ethics over most World Leader's of today in that he did his own fighting, and most likely dying too. Was he brutal? I believe he was a man of his times, doing as his times required a leader to do. In order to inspire fear in your enemy, you must appear to relish the barbarous tortures you inflict upon them. We also must refrain from placing our temporal judgements upon them. It was a very, very different world. And this was a man who had seen the worst in men, I have no doubt, as a hostage of the Ottomans himself for much of his youth. His lands were terribly situated, so he could really have no peace. I really don't think we can judge him.

Those were hard times and people was rude. Vlad invented none of the ways of killing people he used. West Europeans also used impalement (not only ottomans) . Many documents tell us how Spanish conquerors (from the main empire of the time) impaled native americans in their wars (from 1492 onwards), some of them as far as the extreme south of the continent. "The Impaler" seems violent to us today, but he wasn't the only one. (He wasn't THE Impaler)

Just a remark, Vlad Basarab III, a.k.a. Dracula, one of my favourite heroes in history, was indeed born in Sighisoara which was not in Wallachia but Transylvania. Transylvania in those times was part of Kingdom of Hungary.

Actually (as a romanian history enthusiast and student), voievod was one of the 3 titles a ruler would get and it translated to "army commander". He was also the prince (domn) but also the head de facto of the church because one of the main conditions to became a king was to be a direct descented of the ruling dinasty because it was believed they were appointed to rule by God himself. The romanians had a complicated history with orthodoxy because of their own very rich folklore and beliefs.

Everytime I watch a video or read about Vlad I always felt he had a lot to prove and in many ways a bit of an under dog in his early years. He didn't have the most warriors nor a long standing empire and in that kind of world sometimes you just have to take it to the next level of crazy. This is a notable strategy in many cultures. Everyone had done skins of animals, paint your bodies, the norm...but using something like impaling enemies at a rate as he did?? That's terror. I think he and his ppl understood that for king and country, love of their ppl, many of these stories are very embellished for fear factor alone. Could also explain why his wife was kept under wraps. Just a thought...

I worked with a man who was a cook that worked for me in a restaurant in Phoenix and he took was from a city called Oradia in Romania and told me the story of the man he called Vlad sepish Who is the Vlad of this story and he told me the story of what this documentary mentions as the golden cup in the Square in the town that was left there for anybody to drink from but it was not to leave the Square upon penalty of death but the way I heard the story from this person this cook I worked with John bora was that when VLAD was king if you dropped your wallet on the street you could return the next day and your wallet would be right where it had fallen because nobody would take anybody else’s property or they would be impaled! I think this is the same story as the golden chalice that nobody would take from the square John bora was from that part of the world where VLAD was king in Romania!

It must have been good times for wood workers back then. All those stakes required to impale must have kept men busy. Vlad sure was good for the economy and was very green using nice organic wood and reducing carbon footprints of Turks.

Vlad should be honored as one of the greatest and bravest European heros and protectors of Christendom. It's clear that he challenged other European power structures in Europe and so created enemies. If it wasn't for him Europe wouldn't be what it is today. Additionally his bravery and fear he induced in the enemies of Europe ensured no vast invasions plagued Europe for years to come. Him being portraid as a vampire must have come from his enemies within Europe who saught to discredit him and avoid future rulers from going down the path he did.
