Di una purezza incomparabile e al tempo stesso raffinato come un "uovo Fabergè" : sinonimo di tecnica eccelsa e della straordinaria cultura Zarista pre-rivoluzione russa!! Antonio, out of the available (cough, findable) recordings of Sofronitsky, can you recommend a few? Please include the name of the recording label, if at all possible.

+Danny B. The three which come to mind first, all on Denon -- a 2 CD Scriabin recital, mostly from 1960 (it's on YT, 2 hours long); the 2 CD 1949 Chopin recitals (for the nocturnes and mazurkas, again I think most on YT); and a 2 CD Schumann set with my favourite op. 17 Fantasie and Symphonic Etudes (again on YT). Nearly everything is on YT now. The Scriabin and Chopin Denon sets are still available from HMV Japan. I think Vista Vera has released all of these as part of their series, but I haven't heard the transfer quality. As for other CDs, the so-called 'Legendary 1958 Scriabin recital', which is on both Denon and VV. Sofronitsky's Liszt sonata and Schubert sonata D.960 (Denon and probably VV). And volume 15 of the Vista Vera series. I never owned the Brilliant Classics box-set. Some of the recordings from the Scriabin Museum have the worst sound quality. Basically all live recordings from '52 - 60 are worth hearing.

+Danny B. The last Melodiya release (2CD : Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin) is marvellous, with a particularly good sound. The Harmonia Mundi Schubert program is hard to find, but is one of the best sounding Sofro's recordings.
