In a recent discussion with Vlad, TK Kirkland shared his views on why men should avoid taking on the role of stepfathers. My dad was always around. My step dad was not obligated to do anything for me. My dad verbally told him this but, for some reason my step dad and myself built a unbreakable bond. They are both gone and I cry the same for both of them!! I was blessed to have two dads!!! My dad never disappeared out of my life. My parents were married and got divorced. They both moved on and were grown about the situation. My dad taught me how to drive and my step dad taught me how to fix my ride!!! Best of both worlds!!!!!

It happened to me as well when i was 18 dated a girl who had a 1 year old child so we had to take him with us everywhere and we developed a strong bond id watch him while she was at work feed him change his diapers put him to sleep all that. I can definetly see the wisdom in what he's saying. Me personally, I enjoyed raising step kids. I have my own as well......but I enjoyed helping bring up a person. Taking all of our kids on vacations, teaching them life lessons, and helping them through the difficult times. Parenthood and step parenthood were up there with the most gratifying expierences in life for me and seeing the adults they blossomed into. It isn't for everyone but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Marrying someone you have a child with, to some guys, may sound good on the surface if the child or children don't have siblings from other men. If a woman also has other kids by a different father, then those children can legally become his "by default" and his money, assets, resources, and legacy becomes all the children's and potentially their real dad's and their dad's side of the family after a stepfather dies and if his biological child or children with his wife die (unless otherwise legally and appropriately stipulated). It may not sit well with some stepfathers to have another man or men (or their side of the family) potentially benefit from all his hard work or any money, resource, assets, and money the stepfather has left after death. Hopefully, if a man marries a woman with other children who are not his, then he can live with his decision.

I don’t deal with men that have kids because I don’t have any. I think people with no kids should date each other and that people with kids should date each other. Even IF this were the norm the step parent situation would still exist. The only way the step parent problem goes away is if no one ever broke up, everyone waited until marriage before having kids, an individual decides to remain alone or no one ever died. This is a touchy subject because each person situation/relationship differs. I have a non biological 19yr old daughter i been raising since she was 3. Her real dad is a deadbeat career criminal. Being a dad in general can be a thankless job. I have four kids. I worked two jobs making very good money. My wife stayed at home even though she had a nursing degree. I provided a beautiful home, gave lots of affection, did my best to discipline , paid for ballet and music lessons, cars, paid for college although two kids dropped out and didn't finish. At some level, I BELIEVE they appreciate it, But they don't tell me "thank you." Last year one of them called me during Father's Day. Their mom gets most of the credit, love and consideration. Yet I know I did my job. After divorce from a 30 yr marriage I now have two sweet stepdaughters who love me to death. Children are wonderful. At this point, I have no idea if ANY of these kids will 'take care of me' or visit me in my old age. But, I have aways to go till then. My new esposa is a smoking hot young Cubana who takes care of ALL my manly needs and shows mucho gratitude so I'm good! Also, I'm thinking about planting one more seed before I turn 50. Like the poet Too $hort said, "get in where you fit in fool." Live your life fellas!!
