Part 1: • Speech on Forming Arre...
--------
In this clip, Arrested Development co-founder Speech opened up about the group being signed to Chrysalis and planning to drop "Mr. Wendel" and "Natural" as their first two singles. However, after the loss of Speech's brother and grandmother, he wrote the song "Tennessee," which he reveals is the last place he was with both of them. He then explained that it's the most profound song he's ever written, adding that it's like a prayer, much like their song "Take Me to Another Place." Speech also explained that he was worried that "Tennessee" wouldn't take off, but MTV helped speed things up after playing their music video.
After "Tennessee" became a breakout hit, Speech called the feeling surreal since he was coming out of Milwaukee and Atlanta, which were cities that hadn't had a buzzing music scene. After sampling one word from Prince's "Alphabet St.," Speech revealed that Prince charged him $100k right after the song peaked. While he originally was upset at the fee, he realized later on that Prince did him a favor by not seeking ownership of the song or having it pulled off of shelves. He referred to Prince as his favorite artist and described meeting him at Paisley Park.

“Tennessee” was an amazing song. It was always dope when a group came out of nowhere with some dope shit. Like Erykah Badu when she dropped On & On out of nowhere. “Tennessee” was one of those songs where everyone loved it. And then “Everyday People” just solidified that they weren’t one-hit wonders. The whole album was dope.

so much to unpack. it wasn't just hip hop. it was almost everybody. mainly due to his stances on ownership. the hip hop stuff, was cause most of the folks asking were folks he may have liked but didn't want his music used that way. this arrested development situation was also early on when he wasn't knee deep in hip hop and didn't understand it yet.

Speech was inspired to write the song after meeting up with his brother at his grandmother's funeral in Tennessee. Shortly afterward, his brother died suddenly from a bad asthma attack, and Speech wrote the song about the experience of losing two loved ones so close together. This song, "Tennesses" uses a sample from Prince's 1988 song "Alphabet St." that was not cleared ahead of time. Prince's lawyers waited until after the song sold well and then charged the group $100,000 for the use of said sample. Speech later said he felt Prince gave him "a break" by demanding a single payment instead of co-writing credit on the song, which would have entitled Prince to a share of all royalties in the future. Joe Tex's 1966 song "Papa Was Too", James Brown's 1970 song "Funky Drummer", The Brand New Heavies' song "BNH", and a replay of Kurtis Blow's song "Tough" were also sampled.

"Yo, that's Speech from Arrested Development" (you had recently dropped "Like Marvin Said"), and without thinking, I said "What's going on Speech!" and you seemed to laugh and threw the deuces as the light turned green and you drove off seeming to laugh. That made my day, month, and years to come as we retold the story to the other neighborhood kids and our parents. You seemed to have a great spirit. Never forgot how happy you looked. Blessings brougham. Thank you for sharing your soul with the world and being an inspiration for those who came after.

I did a mix where I used 2Pac's vocal from his song "Hennessey" and I mixed it over top of their song "Tennessee". They have a "For DJ's Only" version on their single with the instrumental. Both songs have slightly different BPM but with some tweaking I got them to sync up. I kept the part of their song with the Prince sample and a female saying "Tennessee". (Kind of sounds like Hennessey.) And the part where Speech says "and I'm still thirsty". It's a dope little mix. 😀

Prince was not keen on sampling and thought it was very important people “create” music, not just lay more beats and layers on someone else’s own foundation.

Exactly; you see what happens when the acts like Arrested Development, (and, let's face it, Lauryn Hill) get the rug of other people's music pulled out from under them, and those acts are left to their own creative devices. I remember when the great Ronald Isley said that for the use of the otherworldly "Between The Sheets" he charged a flat fee of $2M ! Good for the Isleys. After all, *the Isleys* were the ones that conceived, polished, and *worked* "BTS" into the monster international hit that it was.

Prince like a lot of black and white artists from his generation and before taught sampling was stealing half stepping and not real creativity...
@nycsongman9758
@nycsongman9758 3 жыл бұрын
@@wayofthegun6224 As I understand it, her album was largely conceived, and executed, musically, by a NJ studio group dubbed the "New-Ark"; ultimately these folk went public about Hill not crediting/ paying them in a multi-million dollar lawsuit, *and won a multi-million dollar settlement from Hill.* You need look no further than the Fugees; *all* of their biggest hits were lifts of other people's songs "Fugee-La La" - Teena Marie's "Oo-La-La", or simply covers of *already-well-established, classic* songs: "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", "Killing Me Softly", and "Ready Or Not (Here I Come)" . Finally, if Hill was this awesome, towering, otherworldly, creative, musical giant, as folk love to claim, *what* has she done in the past *twenty years* ? TWENTY YEARS. Does anybody know how many monster albums/ songs that *true* musical giants like Stevie, Elton John, MJ, Aretha, Mariah, Prince, et al have made in *their* 20-year periods? Simply put, *a lot* ; year after year.

@@nycsongman9758 very true I also heard two rastafarian helped her write a few of her songs and she didn't give them credit ..I knew she wasn't a talented song writer after her mtv show where she did new music ..a lot of young black women from are generation loves to praise her but I never really brought into the hype ..

This was a very good video and interview. Speech is the real deal. Many artist create a fake image but this guys music and knowledge comes from his character which is a real place, as I kind believe music should for me at least. This also tells you several things about Prince and the kind of person that he was. I think he was truly eccentric and not trying to create the persona that he was but he really was and this interview provides a glimpse in to that part of him. Great interview!

Well, at the end of the day, it was business, and Prince opted not to do business with fukkkboys. I can EASILY see Him NOT wanting to be affiliated with the music of colonized minds, and to just let ppl think EVERY PIECE of their beats & lyrics were regurgitated by them & ONLY THEM, for the types of minds that enjoy colonized hiphop... as long as they keep his grown name out of their 'lil mouths.

You don’t have to come on his page and click. I liked the interview a lot. If you can do better create your own content and show us how interviewing should be done.
