How strange to know l have been living 'Dark Academia' fully for decades not knowing that there is actually a name for it. Living in Edinburgh is a bonus as it's almost not possible to avoid the 'academia' mood. I often travel around west of Scotland which are very dramatic and l spend my days totally isolated in a one of the oldest farmhouse on a small island, with my activity like painting and reading. I believe l have seen you around. ❤

You should see some of my books that I’ve accidentally ruined. Heathens united! 💙🩵 I loved this vlog! I’m currently reading Devotions by Mary Oliver and a non-fiction book called Around the world in 80 fish & other sea creatures. I just read Juniper and Thorn and thoroughly enjoyed it. I cannot wait to read A Study in Drowning. I just started this new read, which is dark academia, called Sirens and Muses by Antonia Angress. It is all about artists trying to become artists and succeed at them while trying their identity in the art world, and by a review I watched it seems that they do lose themselves attempting to pursue success and being different from others around them.

I tried to read A Study in Drowning and ended up DNFing it at 30%. I got fooled by the admittedly gorgeous cover, which clearly catfished me with a Hermione Granger look-alike, and no one can convince me otherwise. Sure, the writing is competent and the atmosphere fairly compelling, though the world building felt quite hazy at times with a lot of talk about warring neighbouring kingdoms and a supposed second drowning that's not particularly well explained. However I found the main character Effy to be so insufferable I couldn't bare it anymore and had to DNF the book. The main girl has a one-sided hissyfit with the main guy because he's a half-Argantian who requested the books in the library that she wanted to request (I know. How dare he?!).And so she got so pissed at this completely irrational thing that as soon as she met him she had the most immature, racist, dumbass reactions. I couldn't. A concrete example, also tiny spoilers I guess: Effy had the brilliant idea to walk from the house into the town, without telling anyone, during a downpour in a clearly dangerously unstable cliffside, because she panicked she did a bad decision. And then when Preston had the nerve to save her ass, she goes: "" “Put your seat belt on.” He was trying to humiliate her, to treat her like a child. “My mother doesn’t even make me wear my seat belt,” she scoffed. “I don’t suppose your mother spends a lot of time driving you down half-sunken roads.” She couldn’t think of a clever reply to that. Preston had his seat belt on, and she was too cold and wet to argue. As she buckled herself in, she thought, You are so insufferable. She almost said it out loud. "" Who behaves in this manner? And where is this rivalry they speak of? The enemies to lover thing is a completely fabricated, contrived, one-sided idiocy. Anyway sorry for the rant, different strokes for different folk and all of that.
