Different strokes for different folks… usually use spruce cutters at first then clean up with X-acto /sandpaper! Different techniques is what makes their model hobby fun!

I still use both nippers and an exacto to cut off parts. It depends on the size and placement of the attachment points.

It could be worse. You could be ripping them off the sprue instead (don't fib, we've all done it!). I find I sometimes HAVE to cut them off with a fresh blade rather than cutters. The cutters just won't get in there or if they do, at an angle that may actually damage the part.
@bluestreek4784
@bluestreek4784 3 жыл бұрын
I pretty much do it the same way, I use the cutters to cut parts from the tree, leaving a nib like you had on that hood, then I use the blade to cut the nib off. I've been a carpenter for many years as well as my dad, and we both use the knife to sharpen pencils the same way, lol also, what about all the people that built models way back when, before there was sprue cutters lol, they did just fine. Everyone needs to just do it the way they feel comfortable doing it, I've cut my thumb and fingers many times and wont be the last, lol great video, keep up the great work my friend.

Sprue cutters are an amazing invention for us model builders. I have several sets from cheap to not so cheap and I've been using them for a while now. I've been building model cars for over 40 years and I started out just like a lot of you did back in the day, with an exacto knife and I still use one to this day to remove parts from trees in certain situations and for clean up after nipping with the sprue cutters. We all do things differently. If it works for you then do it that way. If you're here to judge then you're here for the wrong reasons.

I don't do models now but as a kid the only method was a single edge razor blade. I don't even use the spur cutter that came with my 3D printer. I enjoy watching.

I cut off the sprue with xacto blade. I clean up with xacto blade. Then sand. My worst habit is sometimes I don't cut the whole part off. Sometimes I get impatient and twist the last hanger off.

I like to gnaw the parts off the sprue, no chance of the part flying off. And even if you do swallow a part, it'll turn up in a day or two.

I didn't cringe one bit, lol 😆 These days I usually grab the sprue cutters to remove parts from the tree (a mm or 2 away from the part for the same reasons you scribe that line first), but (like you) then I grab my trusty XActo knife to do the trimming, (also like you) I've been doing that since I started building in the 80's (but unlike you, I've fortunately never sliced into myself doing that 🤪 though I have had cuts on every little piggy on both hands except for 1 scar-less finger...including the surgical internal complete rebuilding of the left index finger, but none of those were model building related though 🤣) 😁👍

I didn't think anything of it when you used your Exacto knife. I do it all the time. I have spu (spelling) cutter and use it sometime; however, I mostly use an Exacto and then sand the small nib that's left over.

I remember just flexing the parts off of runners and using Q tips as paint brushes. Having an older brother that liked models helped advance my skills and tools. I didn't even consider sprue cutters until I was about 35 and that's when I stepped things up a notch. I built that Olds engine and painted the intake aluminum to suggest an Edelbrock hi rise with spaced Holley 4500 Dominator

That's how I've been doing it since I started building "seriously" in 1972. I do use sprue cutters now on the bigger parts.. but I still use the x-acto knife way on very small and delicate parts. This is the only way I can keep them from breaking. Again, people should use whatever way that works for them.. and stop criticizing how other people do it... as long as it's what works for them. :)

This is how my dad showed me how to do model cars besides the sanding. We'd hide the imperfect cuts.. Can't always be dependent on a tool! Older modelors stay to this method from the experience they have!!

This is exactly what I do, I actually think its a great method. I cut a little away from the part like you do and sand them down. Comes out mint! One difference with me though is I don't even change my exacto blades out that often 🤣 I came up with this method because I was too much of a cheap skate to pay what they were charging for sprue cutters haha I thought bugger that I can do it for free with my exacto knife!

I think in this hobby and for that matter many other hand cafting hobbies it is good to be able to use a knife and in time the knife teaches you to work safely with it, by avoiding this in fear of cutting your self is like pissing on your feet. You are not going to die by cutting a small or big into your thumb, I have been working so heavy and hard that I rarely get through my skin if I cut my finger. But it's also this Finnish culture with the knife thing, many of us get a hold of a knife when little boy at least me and my son and all my friends. I have been making knives for 20+ years.

The only time I cringe is when the bills are due. 😬 I use all different tools and methods to remove parts from the trees, knife, sprue cutters, side cuts etc.etc. It just depends on the part and where on the tree it's at. Sometimes I like to gnaw em off like a beaver building a dam. 😂

on the one hand, scoring the plastic then snapping it makes total sense. I have watched professional mode builders from ILM make something and they give a couple quick scores and then SNAP the piece off! On the other hand.....DEAR GOD!!! get one of those chainmail metal gloves like the cooks at Olive Garden use when slicing stuff in the kitchen!! ;)
