The issue was that the actual Dahomey kingdom was heavily involved in the slave trade and when the British people wanted to abolish slave trade, the Dahomey kingdom didn't want it to end and they fought to ensure that slave trade wasn't abolished. This was the reason Lupita Nyongo left the project. She has a documentary on it too. You can find it here on KZbin. It's like rewriting history and painting the bad guys as good and heroic.

Song of lawino is a famous poem in Uganda by a Ugandan writer. We grew up studying it in literature in secondary school, was my best book. Saw the play as well. It's a beautiful story. Hope you enjoy it.

I read Jagua Nana's daughter before discovering it was a sequel, and there were parts I was a little lost.
