Kids pick up languages really quick, especially when they are young. Don’t wait until /Nam is all grown up. Just speak khoekhoegowab on a daily basis in the house and before you know it, he will be speaking it❤️😍

Hi love thanks for this comment, I was wondering too. My boy speaks English only and he’s 2, started speaking very early so I wanna introduce our home language but wasn’t sure if I should wait. ❤❤❤

I don't think u have a control over that cause the kids play with different kids nd what the kids are watching daily base is in English......but my son was just also talking English but now he loves to speak nama nd much better than I thought really just give time,cause now I see he loves to Call himself proud Nama so just give time dear😂

I second this really my husband always say kids brains are like a sponge. My son started school with 2 years, but we decided he would speak damara at home. Another thing that helps is we at a stage where we say English week, Afrikaans week damara week that helps a lot even just 30 mins a day
@onceupontheaoxamubs2204Ай бұрын
Yah I was also thinking of you and Ethan and this situation ousie 😅❤️ We must speak with them seriously 😍

One thing Mona that's your son and he's a product of his parents so its only right that he has that upbringing. If you don't establish a foundation now know and be sure that he can be taken by the winds of the world. The reason we celebrate cultures is because of the little that our parents imparted to us as adults now we have a legacy to uphold and that entails educating our kids about who they are. English should be a bonus. But the true essence should never be compromised. That applies especially to intercultural kids too. You are an infusion of two sides so if anything that should make you proud

Omgggg, please teach him while he’s still young. Their brains are like sponges so they absorb everything quickly! My mom’s a Nama but my dad is not. I’m not as fluent as I want to be in Khoekhoe and people would sometimes make fun of the way I speak so I just spoke Afrikaans. I even had Khoekhoe as a subject in school but could not speak for the life of me. I’ve consciously made the effort to speak Khoekhoe because I don’t live in Namibia anymore so I don’t want to feel like an outsider even if I’m not home anymore. Plus it’s apart of our identity. I find pleasure in seeing how foreigners are excited and eager to hear me speak or even talk about my heritage and that also motivates me to learn by fire by force. You won’t ever regret choosing to teach him as young as he is.

I really don’t understand why especially my tribe (#Nukhoen) shy away from our children speaking our language, because for some reason in our society we regard children who speak English as “smart” which is normally not always the case! Let us embrace our culture, languages and identity. Kudos, to you ousie Mona for making this change while your boy is still very young, he will thank you one day!❤

Hi Of Mona, I totally agree with you. I am learning to speak the language as well because my father is a damara but in his household we only spoke English because he was taken and raised by the Whites. I'm right there with you Ousie Mona, I have a damara Mum and a Kavango Dad, I thank GOD my khoekhoegowab is good and it’s all thanks to my Mum who forced into me at young age. I feel so bad that i must speak Afrikaans with my father as i don't know how to speak his language anymore. Kids do what we do and not what we say, so the more the both of you speak Khoekhoegowab there more he will pick up on it. Thank you for showing us that black love is where it's at.🌺🌺🌹🌹🌻🌻🌷🌷🌼🌼💖💖

Children are linguistic geniuses. From birth to 6 years children pick up any language spoken around them. Taking him out of school wouldn't be necessary. They are able to learn multiple languages at the same time. You can just speak to him in Khoekhoe, he gets the English at school and even Afrikaans from his grandmother. By age 3-4 he will be fluent in all 3 languages. Trust me you will be surprised. Don't get discouraged if he only responds in English, that's all he knows for now so you just continue. Best of luck. Hope this helps.

A nice conversation, my son was a late speaker and when he went to school that’s actually when he picked up English at school and speaks that fluently. 😂I don’t know why we speak English in our home, I don’t have an explanation for it, but the kids definitely do understand khoe-khoe it’s just the speaking and same here we just speak English to them. I’ll try to be more intentional maybe my husband though because I’m so bad with it. Otherwise yes the kids need some kind of identity, mine are Gowasebs and how embarrassing not to speak Damara. 😢thanks for the wake up call👍But like u said, school and electronics contributed to this English lifestyle.

Maybe try walking him in the street just around both blocks inside he gets out of yard that way he knows his surroundings and than he can return. and change the collar to a vest collar that you put both his front legs in to avoid strangulation. also on the current blue collar change it to a collar where you put the little id with his name, your name and street address or telephone number incase he gets out. just some advice
