Reminds me of a trip a young couple did, circa 2006. They decided to drive from Oxford UK to Oxford, Canterbury, NZ. in a Morris Oxford. They left to handful of relatives and a random dog. Their arrival in Oxford NZ resulted in 5000 plus people, a parade of Morris Oxfords, brass and rock bands, a fairground, magicians and other random events. They were expecting "about 50" to meet them. A very good day out. If you are in the North Canterbury/Christchurch area, then add me to the list of contacts willing to "show you around"

Getting exciting! My tip for storing cars is to ensure you have one of those moisture absorbing things in it, might not be as much of an issue in your storage unit, you might even benefit from leaving a window open as its inside - but whatever, don't leave the window open when it's outside, in the snow - turns out cleaning a mouldy interior is very unpleasant and difficult, and I'm an idiot! I have stored cars for months quite often (usually unintentionally because 'I'll fix it next week'), only time I've had flat spots is when the tyre is also flat - your cars will be fine!

'K' is August 1971 to July 1972, Some local licensing authorities brought in the registration letter number plates in 1963, beginning with 'A', while others started with 'B', in 1964. Originally, the registration letter year was the same as the calendar year. This was changed in 1966 to August to July, as fewer people bought new cars in January. To adjust for this change, 'E' was a short year from January to July 1967

Pre 1963 number plates ( 'index marks' in cop-speak) were all the responsibility of county registrations, the three letters told you where the registration pocket card was, before the rise of the great beast (DVLA) in 1965.

There is a relatively simple solution to the Australia/New Zealand and car for T-shirt situation. Buy the same type of car in both Oz and NZ. I understand old Ford Falcon wagons are usually in good supply and pretty cheap in both countries. Of course, that would cut down on the variety of the trip, though...

Pre 1962 in some parts of the country village elders would assign registration numbers at a mystical ceremony each new moon, or in special cases they were passed down the maternal family line. The British museum has the original manuscript of "pride, prejudice and vehicle registration" by Jane Austin. It was later edited to concentrate on the relationships and romance as vehicle licencing was a bit racey.

@MGBetts15 жыл бұрын
They actually started in 1963, 'A' being between Jan 1st and Dec 31st. 'E' was a short year, from Jan 1st to July 31st, after which 'F' commenced on August 1st 1967. There was no "I" which explains why "J" commenced August 1st 1970.
@MGBetts15 жыл бұрын
Also for 1963 and 1964, the new system was not universal. Some regions simply swapped the format around so that it was "123 ABC" instead of the previous "ABC 123".
@gimble86385 жыл бұрын
MGBetts yeahthere was no I because looks like a 1, no O because looks like a Zero no Q as a year letter because that was for Questionable origin (bitsas,specials and kit cars etc) no U because could be mistaken for a V and no Z because cud be mistaken for a 2, so in short out of 26 letters the whole system covered only 20 yr letters fron A-Y :)
@gimble86385 жыл бұрын
then of course when we went to year letter at the start in 84 it was all the same idea untill 97/98 as in R reg was the last full year before the 6 monthly changes we have now so that alphabet cycle only covered 18.5 yrs (from 1st of september 2001 51 came in)

Holdens and Fords are the obvious ones, but may I suggest a late '90s TH Mitsubishi Magna v6? They were unique to here, built in Adelaide with high Aussie content, and sold in very large numbers; the Mitsubishi engine was more refined (albeit more of a smoker in old age) than the Holden/Buick pushrod v6 which was rough as guts. Despite their popularity they have a bad reputation in the trade, a combination I think befits this channel

Can you imagine how much nicer the last few years would have been if you had done this all along? Working in an orderly environment makes it all so much easier. I'm like you, I make a mess, but I have learned that the job is half a job if you can find what you need, have some space to work, and don't have to keep stepping over stuff. Try and adopt this orderly manner because it really helps. Also, women become surprisingly easier to live with....
