I really like that XCP-NG and Proxmox allow live migration and high availability without any licensing non sense like VMware. XOSAN-O2 and CephFS are available on the respective hypervisor, so could create a SAN without another appliance which is also a great feature.

Nice video of very advanced setups. I'm only ~18 years behind with networking my VMs. I use 1Gbps Ethernet and my VM backup snapshots copy at 200Mbps, because of a load of 95% on one of the Pentium 4 CPU threads (1C2T; 3.0GHz; 2GB DDR). The only thing, that is somewhat modern, is my 32-bits software FreeBSD 13.0 and OpenZFS 2.0 released April 2021.

1Gbit is too rich for that kind of hardware lol

@@marcogenovesi8570 I don't need the 1Gbps, the 80 to 100GB increments it backups each Saturday just take ~1 hour :)

What about backups? Thing that has disappointed me is the lack of advanced backup software for Linux solutions. Like being able to spin up instant VM’s in other places, database-aware backups, etc. Like what if someone deleted emails in someone’s exchange mailbox and asked you to restore it? I’d like to see better backup software for proxmox/XCP-NG. I’d love to dump Windows more often at work but this has been one big thing always in my way

20:25 Nutanix does the same thing (data locality, VMs are always run from local storage but remote writes happen in accordance with replication policies set on the data pool) and is KVM based rather than having to deal with a Xen spinoff
@marcogenovesi85702 жыл бұрын
I thought Nutanix was its own thing. It's hard to get actual info about it
@ckbwtf2 жыл бұрын
The locality aspect really has nothing to with AHV. It’s just the CVM’s fabric monitoring the back channel storage requests and ensuring those bits get stored locally after enough hits. It does that across AHV, VMWare, Citrix, and Hyper-V. If I remember correctly, though, any affinities outside of AHV have to be set in the CVM admin panel *and* in the hypervisor. The problem with Nutanix (well, one of my many problems with Nutanix) is just how excessively diversified their productized features are while remaining decoupled from each other, meaning getting all the different products and services working together can be a hassle. There’s also a lot of technical debt in their products, causing a lot of inefficient use of resources, and slow adoption of alternative architectures.

I never heard of XCP-NG util today. I have to wonder if XCP-NG could theoretically work in a similar way to the Big Little architecture for ARM or Intel's Performance Efficiency architecture but for server virtualization. The analogy I had in mind may not be entirely applicable to how XCP-NG works but I am curious to learn more about it.

@Amogh-Dongre2 жыл бұрын
Xcp-ng is more flexible while proxmox is more first time user friendly
@h4X0r992212 жыл бұрын
@@Amogh-Dongre I feel like it's exactly the other way around. I have been watching all of LawrenceSystems videos since he started making them and it always felt like a fleshed out hypervisor with a sanitized GUI, but I'm not sure how edge cases can be handled. Proxmox has been on the market for years and has a giant community around it. I suspect it has more functionality for niche use cases instead of just the obvious ones. One example could be the whole PCI passthrough and nvidia vgpu stuff that can be done with proxmox (I don't know if XCP-NG can do all the same things). Another big reason is the way Promox supports ZFS natively while xcp-ng uses it as file system only. You can see that with Proxmox backup server, which is another big plus for proxmox as it really takes care of all your backups needs for pve. Maybe the ZFS implementation of the two products could also be an interesting topic for Wendell.

@Wendell I have a request of you, since I lack the funds to do it, but I would LOVE to see a Unicomp model M with a retrofitted Rasberry pi 400 inside it. Do you think you could do it? Do you accept the challenge? Do you even care about such things? For me I love case mods, and that's basically what this would be. Also it would be closer in look to a C64, which is super cool, but not a C64, cause I think that would be actually too tall, and would look weird.
@mndlessdrwer2 жыл бұрын
If you wanted an even more baller version of that kind of compute multi-node server design, you'll want to reach out to Dell about the PowerEdge C6525. Up to two 3rd Gen 64-core Epyc processors per node. All the RAM. M.2 Gen.3x8 internal riser, dual PCIe Gen.4x16 risers with an OCP3x16 Gen4 onboard card slot for some truly insane connectivity options in such a small footprint. Oh, and each node gets up to six drives, with two being optionable NVMe capable backplanes. Not quite as nice as having all of them be NVMe capable, but at least there is some option for it.

Shit on it no desire to explain me no nice ^^ not even 4x server would have topped what I would have rocked with it, I would have everything ^^ yes the cups are great ^^ but the clutch who 1000 percent server would manage 900 like not tack bar enough and all core and high tripled 300multiplier secured to the limit and error free with 18x ram stretched x4 256x1cuda cash boosted x4 on the way the who simply everything internet data GPU CPU 1000 percent everything without ifs and no and buts .OC boards bring and real faster high CPUs terra tipper alone not the who really next level I can-not imagine so violently, and I am not shocked and that is not a lie. I can't afford it ^^ just don't care that you know ^^ then you know what I mean, you won't get that baked in the cloud alone, every expert can tell me about the bear, I think I would have blocked the big one and the little cores are turned up with tipping, the performance increases, the cash is faster everything turns up to max without exploding that is 34 cores x5 in 1080p = 170 x5 (5g) in 8k 60 Hz = 850 core run 5x times 4 times more 16 core SSD x4 data run-through boost Download must yes if the one with a pc 16 cores = 1600gb HDD x4 16x 4 = 4pcs data trans Bost = 256 cores + 1106 cores power 4x 7400mb 8k 1000x8 = 1106x8 = 8.808gbits speed cores boost the. Amen server Internet can never possibly do that if the download is there who ^^ and really transmits I don't think that's over 8000Gbits ^^ limit max download only with server x4 cloud bad luck if you don't believe in it anymore ^^ but it is not and the one on a system there is everything split up and downloaded with a delay only need 16kx3 = OC Download ready Botnang 16k + Download 16k together 300x radio x6 core + 16K core Little together I encourage everything goes up hopefully that is ^^ 8008Gbits in the triple + max OC 300x multi one never in the SEK 80bit 60hz on dvi 43k x5g in that the cable can process so quickly a miracle and cash can keep it on the monitor so you don't have to give everything for it data works perfectly without an adapter card ^^ in the OC - atom bomb ^^ all 1080p ^^^ City 4k you have to subtract otherwise the bill doesn't fit even if 4k is still the same, I don't have to say that I unlock speeds everywhere in the bios that are not normal ^ comes to perfection, of course people that would work ^^ switched. You have to test my opinion your-self, I swear on it ^^. It's just fun anyway, so your CPUs are all heavy today enough today that for real there is also my age shit accelerated there is nothing slower boarding no one chip tripper limited to trap voltage data and pure acceleration circle balance 4 pcs autobahn on a CPU bench pc rig automated in 3 x boosters + testing it is the limit means that the shaft you never ^^ so to act so high BLCK and 3x real 1 x download I practice storage all performance by the 340K dvi 5g that optimizes it at the limit with power data internet audio hardware and performance perfectly left to right bandwidth of the device thanks to ram18x the bomb works I filled it up sorry for filling up Wolfs really clarify more mention I can't prove anything ^^ Finds funny speculate fantasize ^^ ill ^^ throw away server 4x load version what one thinks it is faster.
