I usually come to your channel for enjoyment and fun, but I got my cactus in and even though I don't have mealies now, the seller contacted me and said shortly after shipment he had a mealy bug out break and to watch out for them. The plants look great, and I am preparing myself with your wisdom!!! Thank you, and Enjoy! Many blessings to you and Hans!

Those mealy bugs have been really sneaky lately rearing their heads...😆 Oh they drive me crazy! I've bought 3 more bottles of bug treatment as a precaution incase I need it, it feels like one of those years where pests are going to be abundant in number as I too found a few stray bugs on plants that never had bugs on 🙆‍♀️ Like you say they seem to appear from thin air! 🤣 Just to mention its the adult male Mealy bugs that have wings and can fly around so that is all we need! 🤦‍♀️Great video Lyn.

Wow, great tip about rubbing alcohol and black sootie mould, I'm still learning so much from your channel! I don't like the strong smell of neem indoors though (small apartment), I still use it but not on a regular basis. So the rubbing alcohol has been my good friend, couldn't miss it, and am currently seeing if I get good results from using castile soap with water. Didn't know black mould could be connected to mealies and nectaries, I've only just discovered what brown mould is : ) Thanks for sharing Xx

It is unusual for mealies to strike Echinocactus or Ferocacti barrels, as most of these have quite thick epidermal skins, making it difficult for these critters to tap into and gain access to the plants juices. I did have an issue a few years ago with some of them hiding amongst the wool of the developing aereoles, but generally they go for seedlings or more tender cacti such as Opuntia and Consoleas. I am quite tired of dealing with these persistent bugs, but I know it's never going to stop becouse of our damp and mild climate. Like you, I prefer to use a clear solution of isopropyl alcohol to tackle them, as the insecticides sometimes bleach the cactus, with an ugly yellow brown stain. The extinction of mealy bugs is one form of life I for one would not miss. Thanks for posting!.
@desertplantsofavalon

hahaha James :-D yes the extinction of Mealy bugs from this planet is definitely one we would definitely not miss hahaha! these pests from cactus hell really are so persistent and the little horrors of the cactus world alongside with Spider mites haha, and so happy you prefer to use the alcohol instead of the insecticides too, and yes in the past I have had cacti go yellow and brown at the top from insecticides, and the damage can sometimes look even worse than spider mite, Opuntias and Consoleas are Mealy bug magnets haha, I am always battling the battle of the Mealies with my Opuntia's :-D thanks so James much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Somerset for a super Sunday afternoon XXXX

I have a big problem with root mealy bug, I have tried everything , washing off the roots and treating with neem oil and using systemics like Bug off , but they still come back , any suggestions please
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carl :-D Root mealies are a real pain in the butt for us plant growers, I am always battling this problem too and having this with some of my Aloes, I wash off all the soil thoroughly and then soak the roots in Rubbing alcohol to kill the mealies on contact, and then after the roots have dried, I then soak the roots for another 24 hours in Neem oil and Horticultural soap, before potting back up again in very gritty cactus and succulent mix, it sounds like you are doing everything right, I honestly think that mealies including root mealies are something that we have to live with as its impossible to eliminate them completely but keeping them under control is the next best thing, if you can avoid peat in the soil this also helps as root mealies are attracted to peat, I use a very gritty mix of Loam, Grit and Horticultural sand at 3 equal parts, and this really helps to prevent and starve off root mealies, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXXX
