One thing I "like" about not knowing who JTR was is that it has put so much focus on who the women were, due if nothing else to people being fascinated by the topic yet having nowhere to go with it. So, we know their names, quite a bit about their lives (certainly compared to any other working class women in Victorian London), and we can value them as human beings by remembering them for whom they were. And I'm quite happy making that trade. As far as I'm concerned, we know all we need to know about who Jack the Ripper was: he wasn't important, he wasn't some great malevolent presence, he wasn't worth remembering; frankly, he was just some a**hole.

It's kind of a weird but fitting quote from a Kendrick Lamar song where he says "Everybody's gonna respect the shooter, but the one in front of the gun lives forever" Basically the killer will obviously get headlines and what not but the victims will never be forgotten and tossed aside

It was a common belief, at least among prostitutes at the time, that alcohol reduced the risk of pregnancy. This may partially explain the alcoholism. Also, while water quality had greatly improved after the cholera epidemics in the 1860s, people were still suspicious of it.

I love how he doesn't show the crime photos. While I understand monetization probably factors into the equation, it adds a bit of class by keeping the gruesome visuals out of video and let the women get back some of the dignity denied them.

There was only 1 crime scene photographed (Miller's Court) but I assume you refer to the existing morgue photos and I agree Lemmino is showing his class by not putting them in this video. I was also pleased he didn't use any of the fake pictures of the poor women you often find in other videos or articles. There exists 1 and only 1 known picture of any of the victims and that is the one of Annie Chapman that is shown in this video. I was already familiar with Lemmino's work and his excellent research, but is is nice to see it confirmed. I never understood why some documentary makers would present a victim with a photo that is not her and thus only add insult to the horrible fate she suffered. (Unless of course it is lazy copy/paste from others work and they don't even realise the photos aren't genuine)

My only thought is that unless there is some form of evidence like the initials in the crime scene photo it doesn’t need to be shown. But that’s just me. It’s nice to see something from the era to get a better idea than imagine modern garb or tools if that makes sense. Like for instance in the final murder did the killer know the trick with the door because he stalked her or was he let in. I’m also confused on how the trick with the door even worked cause I feel you would cut yourself.

I believe Charles Cross/Lechmere was Jack the Ripper. Three elements make Lechmere stand out. The first is the women were all murdered within his pathway to work or his childhood neighborhood and I’ll get back to why that fact is extremely important in a moment. Secondly, he was found in the presence of a fleshly killed Mary Ann Nichols and some say a victim that wasn’t completely dead. A victim whom the ripper seemingly didn’t have enough time to mutilate. As if he was caught in the act of murdering Mary Ann Nichols. Third, when he appeared at the inquest, he was wearing his apron. Because car men wore aprons. One of the newspaper reports describes how he was attired and he, turned up in his work clothes at the, at the inquest. Living as an adult in an area where the murders took place when he was a young man and living in the area where Jack the Ripper murders took place add to that he was employed as a delivery driver in Whitechapel means Lechmere was intimately familiar with the area. Familial enough with Whitechapel he knew where to lead these women to a place where he could kill and mutilate them undisturbed. If the grizzly task was interrupted he knew where to duck and hide till the police passed on by. Being familiar with the area he knew where prostitutes could easily be found. The reason he escaped with little more than short-lived police attention was that he was a very ordinary man. The kind of person people just overlook. He was in his early forties, he had a job, he was never thought of as mentally ill there was nothing to bring attention to him he was just the guy next door.

Actually you just need to be with someone trustworthy I think. Or another woman and not be a lady of the night. He never targeted anyone when they were with someone else only when they were alone. So a common boarding house where there’s a bunch of people in the same room would in theory be pretty safe from the ripper.

We do not yet know the identity of Jack the Ripper, and it seems it will take some time to uncover the truth. Nonetheless, there remains a chance that we may eventually solve this mystery. We simply need to await the right technological advancements or the discovery of new evidence, and voilà. Admittedly, this prospect does not bode well for us mere mortals, who may not live to witness the revelation. However, I firmly believe that one day we will indeed discover the truth.

This is one of my favourite videos of you reacting. It's really interesting to see. I've recently read the book "The five: the untold stories of Jack the rippers victims" and it's an amazing interesting read focusing on the victims of Jack. There's a video from Debunked File called "Jack the ripper: the forgotten 5" which uses it as an inspiration and source if you're in the mood to cover Jack again but cover the victims more then him. Its very long but it's split up into 6 distinct parts each part focusing on the life of one of the 5 and the final being on jack and ripperology as a study. Id love to see you react to it as it had a lot of information about the victims of Jack and Victorian day to day life as a poor, middle class and desperately poor perspective. Know it's a big request but hope you see and consider it. If there's an official way for me to ask where it gets added to a waiting list for consideration I'll add it there. Thanks for the read

Very good original video and commentary. One thing I will mention is that you stated in your commentary that there is no way that JTR stopped killing on his own and must have died, been incarcerated, etc after the Kelly murder. However, this seems to be exactly what a more recent serial killer did in fact do. BTK whom you also mentioned stopped his killing spree of his own volition for quite a number of years before finally being caught due to being an egomaniacial idiot.

Classic videos by both Lemmino and you! Thanks, by the way, for using the word 'prostitute'; it is not an offensive term, the English language has another word that specifically evolved as an offensive one for the occupation (it starts with 'wh'). The push for the word 'sex worker' is nothing more than pseudo-intellectual Neo-Marxism, in the same way they pushed for 'Latinx' (and failed) and 'people of color' (unfortunately were more successful in bullying people to use that one). There was no reason to move away from the words latino, black, prostitute, etc., except for a desire to virtue signal in the most unearned way possible; furthermore, there has never been the slightest bit of evidence the suggested/demanded replacement words helped stop or lower discrimination. The post-modern obsession with language and its supposed implicit biases is, at best, an absolute waste of time and energy, and should be ignored.

21:50 I understand where he is coming from by saying they seem disconnected. But some serial killers begin with a personal connection and develop the thirst or need to kill more from that first kill. So if the killer felt a personal connection or embarrassment from Tabrum he might have been more vicious with the 39 stab wounds. But that does seem like a very rapid development of style or technique. So it could very well be disconnected.

Pat Brown's profiling of JTR is worth a look. Only the first four canonical victims are likely to have been the work of 'Jack'. The killer was most likely a local man, a working man who knew the area. Her prime suspect is Jacob Levy, and I have to agree. He was a butcher, had a shop nearby, and died a couple of years later. People overlook him because he isn't exciting, there are no photographs, and they fear being called anti-Semitic, but he fits the bill perfectly. Plus the last murder, Mary Kelly, looks very much like a copy-cat and doesn't fit the JTR M.O., with the boyfriend likely staging the murder scene to throw the police off. These were just run of the mill murders of the time, made sensational by the local press inventing the character of 'Jack' and forging the letters. Strangled, mutilated, and left for dead. Just an angry, local, psychopathic butcher releasing his pent up aggression, and having some fun at the expense of the destitute and the local press. The victims would have been quickly forgotten if it hadn't been for publicity hungry journalists.

even if they weren't following tumblety 24/7, I find it incredible to believe someone who just got bailed out of jail on suspicion of being the ripper would then go and commit the most ripper like crime of them all a day later. I know the guy was a few cards short of a pair of aces but that's really hard to believe

Chris, this is a real long shot that your ever gonna see this, but i got recommended this after watching the jack the ripper episode of Buzzfeed unsolved and it got me thinking, you should definitely check them out. Their buzzfeed unsolved show has LOADS of cool cases, ranging from theft to murder to disappearance, altho i will say they dont take it entirely seriously and joke around a lot, but i still think it is worth a watch. They also do something called puppet history on their new watcher channel since they left buzzfeed, which is more traditionally down your ally :) Much love, from Huddersfield

I was an avid fan of Mindhunters. What if Jack the Ripper moved around a lot. I saw an article about murders in Scotland that may have had the same MO. If he was a butcher who was good at his craft he could have easily taken his trade to a new location. Much like HH Holmes did. People during that time did not interfere when violence was happening. Much like many do not today because of the possibility of you becoming a new target. It is very possible that Jack was spotted killing someone and that person not reporting it. I remember what Ed Kemper had said about talking to cops, and how he gleaned information about suspects. Its very possible that Jack was at the inquests. If Jack at an inquest saw that they were getting too close for comfort he would simply move to another location. If Mary Kelly was his victim and he was present during that briefing he probably got the thrill of his life with what the police said. He would also know that people would be overly vigilant. Its also possible he was a member of that public vigilante group. He would know exactly where they would be at certain times and would also know when and when not to commit a murder. I have no clue what his triggers were. Prostitutes are easy prey and they can represent different things to a killer. He may have even canvassed the area to learn patrolmen's routes. The thought did occur to me that the Ripper might have been Lusk himself. A builder does travel and Dance Halls are everywhere. The letter always bothered me. I think it was over done with bad spelling on purpose. The "o" in sir doesn't make sense when you look at how he knows vowel pronunciations in other words. The word "knif" starts with a k. That makes no sense either because of knowing a silent k. He left the E off every word but left it on a misspelled "nise". But then has a silent g and spelled "signed" correctly. Mishter? This was misspelled on purpose as well. Just my thoughts. I do think he was a member of the group if not Lusk. Thoughts?

Here's one possibility that often gets over looked. While everyone was looking for a doctor or a butcher the ripper could have been a cook or chef. They HAVE TO both know where the organ's are and be very fast with a knife.

My, admittedly limited, understanding of the state of police work at the time suggests that the London Police actually did *everything* it was in their power to do to stop the killer. But they simply didn't have the understanding or technology that could've led to a breakthrough.

Watched all the originals when they were out, rewatching again in the two masterclass that is this reaction video. Question for chat: I only did a quick search, but I didn't see that any of Mary Ann Nichols' children ever did interviews about their mother, period. Never mind in the 20th century. Does anyone know differently?

William Henry bury is also a good suspect. Lived in Bow at the time, violent towards women, moved to Dundee at the end of 1888. Convicted of strangling and stabbing his wife shortly thereafter and executed.

I could see a connection between Tabram and Nichols with their injuries in terms of escalation if I made a particular assumption. That assumption would be that Tabram's murderer might not have planned to kill anyone beyond her at the time and it was done in a fit of rage. Perhaps a potential lover or companion who found out that she was working as a prostitute. What may have happened after is that he found satisfaction in her death, possibly even a sense of supremacy, and mentally connected her acts of prostitution as a reason for the feeling. The killer could then have decided he wanted that feeling again and that killing other ladies of the night would give it to him. It could also explain the three-week gap as he reconciled those conclusions with himself as well as why he used a different method of attacking (slashing instead of stabbing) to see if it enhanced the feeling in any way. If that happened, it could also explain the escalation in future attacks in regards to taking body parts. Since the final canonical victim was the most heavily mutilated, it could be at that point he reached a plateau. This could explain why the killings stopped after that if we do not conclude capture for other crimes or death. In other words, the killer might have concluded he would get no other satisfaction in future killings.

Hey, I'm curious on your thoughts on this- the series fate: apocrypha portrays jack as an avenging river spirit who took pity on the dead babies killed by the prostitutes who wouldn't raise them. As a dark fantasy interpretation what do yiu think? Fate is know for taking mythological versions of historical characters, like king arthur, heracles, gilgamesh, Saint Shiro (of japan) joan of arc, and Cú Chulainn (and MANY more) pairing them with wizards in the modern era and they all battle to gain control of the holy grail. usually the plot of each of these figures follows the themes of their mythological stories. In fate: zero you see a moment when alexander the great, king author and gilgamesh have a parley, and discuss what it means to be a worthy king, they also all wind up battling each other later on.

I wish I could go back in time and find out who it was. Someone took it to their grave. From this, it seems like Cross and Cohen are the most likely suspects, imo, but it could just as easily be someone nobody’s ever considered. Being such a large city with people from all over the world constantly coming and going, it could’ve been anyone. I feel like this will be a mystery forever.

I think it's waaaay more likely the Ripper was a butcher than a doctor. Just based on the whole "the other piece I fried and ate" bit of the From Hell letter. I don't buy the idea that the Ripper was educated and upper class just because he knew his way around a body. I think that was partly an excuse by the police and the media as to why Jack was never caught. Plus, an upper class man would be unlikely to be hanging around in the same places as these women to be able to select them as victims. Someone of the upper class would get noticed in Whitechapel in those days.

don't serial killers have a cool down period beetwin killings until they cant control their urges

The cool down period is also heavily influenced by the underlying mental condition of the person. The more "rational" the person the longer the cool down seems to be. Possibly due to the ability to delay gratification and control impulses. The less mentally stable the less impulse control (that is also highly subjective)

The "proof" of him being in London at the time of the Ripper killings is flimsy at best. Someone started out wanting to believe it was true, then found "evidence" to corroborate it. In my mind, there's zero chance Holmes was the Ripper.

Admittedly I only clicked on this video as an excuse to watch Lemmino's excellent documentary for a third time, but I did thoroughly enjoy the added context and information you provided. Personally I'm not convinced any of these suspects were the Ripper. Bennett is the most probable suspect of the lot followed by (not Aaron) Kosminski. Cross/Lechmere only feels like a suspect of convenience. He was in the right place and time but the fact he continued living as a free man long afterwards does not explain why the murders suddenly stopped. I agree with your assessment that the Ripper either died or was incardinated for a different crime. One theory I have is that the Ripper had a terminal illness (tuberculosis perhaps), knew they were dying and committed the murders as a twisted means of creating some kind legacy for themselves. It could explain why the murders occurred within a relatively short time frame, why they were often so brutal, and why they stopped so abruptly. Additionally it explains the apparent boldness in which the killings were committed because the murderer had less fear of being caught.

Serial killers have actually been known to stop, so that shouldn't rule out Lechmere. Nobody else has the connections to the murder spots and timings like Lechmere does. Typical nondescript local man you would think could possibly be the culprit..... just like most serial killers.
