Being a super frugal gal, when I splurge on an indie stripey skein I squeeze three pairs of socks out of them (I've never had a 24 stripe skein). I do contrast heels, toes and cuffs (of course) I knit two at a time toe up, after the contrast toes I begin the striping, park the second sock while I knit the heel of contrast, cut the contrast when it gets back to the stripey yarn, knit across the top of the heel to the second sock, knit that heel, and then be back to the stripey yarns, which I knit depending on the stripey sequence, the knit the cuff. Usually the third sock is mostly contrast, but having knit the first two socks, I know how long the remaining stripes will knit, so based on that I determine when to start the stripey yarn....

For the advent socks, either do an afterthought heel or take a sock you've already knit and count how many rows for the length of the foot. Once you know how many rows 1 stripe is, then you can figure out how many stripes you need for the foot.

You could always knit the entire tube for your sock, then do an after thought heel. 🧦

I contemplated this but I worry it wouldn’t fit as well as I’ve got quite wide feet? It’s a great idea to consider!
@abigailickringill1140Ай бұрын
@angieanderson6082 if you need some extra room with an after thought heel you can knit a few rounds before starting the decreases. I find 3 rounds of knit before starting the Dec's works for my feet (around 1cm extra) but it's very much trial and error for what fits your feet. Doing after thought with self striping also gives a cool bullseye effect :)

@@abigailickringill1140this is a great suggestion. And you can still try it on

My recipie for a good sock size is 15rnds 1x1 twisted rib and 50 rnds on the leg. Maths wise knit a full stripe repeat and weigh your yarn. This will give you the weight of a stripe repeat. Divide your 50g by this weight this gives you the number of repeats in a skein. For foot length, a uk11 is 28.9 cm, uk10 is 28cm, so minus off 2.5cm of neg ease, then a toe length of about 5cm. The remaining length is your heel to start of toe (heel flap gusset), for an after thought heel minus off another 5cm to give the length of foot you need to knit from where you mark the heel insertion point. Use your gauge to work out how many rows this would be. Hope this helps! 🎉 -Abby

Hi Martyn! I know you’ve already gotten many great tips and comments about the socks but I’ll give you my advice anyway! 😝 My tip for you is to make 70 rnds for the foot so if you get 5 rnds on each color, that would be 14 days. I did 75 rnds for your socks (and 65 for Mark’s) but my gauge might be slightly tighter.

Do you know what’s better than Vlogmas? Not to much really! 😂 What lovely boxes (the insides of course)….so much thought and care put into each one! Striped Advent advice: How many inches do you like in the leg of your sock, how many inches in the foot of your socks (with and without toes), what kind of heel are you doing (if you’re using contrasting yarn might I suggest a garter stitch heel flap and turn-but check your yarn weight before and after). Now how many stripes does your yarn have per sock? Some Advents have 24 stripes. Now what is the stripe per inch measurement? Remembering that your cuff could just have a pop of contrasting color -then continue the cuff with your stripes (if needed depending on your measurements) Like 5 rounds of contrasting color then start your first stripe for 5 rounds to equal 10 rounds of cuff for example….also remember you use more yarn picking up the gusset so your stripes will be smaller depending…..and if you continue striping for toes the stripes could get larger….just some considerations. Can’t wait for the Vlogmas continuation!

Having fun with the Polka Dot Creek and Maker's Mercantile Advents I got. Polka Dot Creek is a 20 gr per day Advent from 24 different Canadian dyers.. The theme is the movie Elf. Maker's Mercantile is a MKAL and an Advent. The MKAL uses Schoeppel Crazy Ball and HiKoo Madrona. I'm working on the MKAL and enjoying the daily surprises.

I have never tried this, the idea just came to me. I have knitted many pairs of top down socks. I would estimate (as closely as possible) what percentage of yarn is necessary for the foot. Contrasting heel and toe? If no contrasting heel and toe, then subtract that percentage from your total yarn weight and then the rest would be cuff. For example, I knit socks for some men with large feet. The foot is probably 45% of the sock. So, with 50 grams per sock-I would use 22.5 grams for the foot. That would leave 27.5 grams for the cuff. If you try that let me know how it works.

SELF STRIPING ADVENT TIP, in order to get all 24 stripes on each sock WITHOUT an afterthought heel: I know that I like 60 rounds for my foot before I start the contrast toe, so I knit the cuff and the first several stripes. At that point, I know how many rounds per stripe on average, and, based on that, how many stripes I’ll need for my foot. 24 minus that number equals the number of stripes before my contrast heel, then knit the heel and carry on with the stripes.
@rossifamily5227Ай бұрын
Hi Martyn. I suggest an afterthought heel. I prefer that heel for striped socks so that your stripes stay the same throughout.
@Andrea-di9juАй бұрын
Find a pair of socks you love and do two things … weigh them and count the rows in the foot. If the total sock is less than 60 grams you should not run out of yarn between the 50 gram main skein for the main part of the sock and the 10 grams of a mini. If it is over 60 grams, you will need to do math to figure out how much yarn you use for the foot plus toe and then you can weigh you yarn as you get into the leg. … alternatively just do a true afterthought sock ….. knit the cuff, then a tube until day 24, add in your toe then measure, and cut in the heel.

Ooh, Gem's Week 1 is so different from her Day 1! Excited to see where she takes us next! As for your socks, you could do an afterthought heel in a top down sock (she says, having never done an afterthought heel...) The lovely Louise Tilbrook might be able to give pointers. Good luck!

Happy Vlogmas Martyn! I’ve never done an advent striped sock before however I may get one next year. (Is it too soon to plan for next advent?!) I would think after thought heel if you have done those before. I know my feet don’t like them though. My other thought is that each stripe is likely to be the same number of rows and assuming the whole skein has the 24 stripes, just knit the first two days, count how many rows that each of the colours are and then count how many rows you normally knit for your foot. This should be able to tell you roughly how many stripes/days you need for your foot. I know the gusset will affect it but hopefully it will get you very close.

Great 1st Vlogmas video, i have 3 but saving Gemma’s for twixtmas as I got the 12 day one. Fibre Fox and The Camels yarn are my other two. I tried Judy’s magic cast on for a hot water bottle and it was really easy to follow so I would be inclined to try toe up socks now! I’m not experienced enough in sock knitting to know how to maximise all your yarn though!

Try a Turkish cast on for toe up socks. It’s just a wrap around two needles, rather than that “bob 'n' weave” of the Jeny's Magic Cast On. (It is Jeny, right?) I admit I do try to do Jeny's, but when I get frustrated that it isn’t quite working, I resort to Turkish.
