Welcome to the first episode of Vlogmas! 🎅✨ Join us for a fun, festive day in the life of our family here in beautiful Cannes as we get into the holiday season!
I start the day with a mindful walk into the city to visit my local gym - no New Year’s resolutions here, just enjoying every day as a gift and doing things when they feel right. 💪 On returning home, I’m delighted to find Ryan back early from work (although he’s still glued to his laptop on the sofa!), and Seth has only had half a day at school.
Things take a hilarious turn when Seth decides to bake in the kitchen while I’m relaxing in the bath… Let’s just say his “cake” is an interesting creation, but it gave us all a good laugh!

Fern lovely that little burner is there to keep the cheese or oil warm. You put methylated spirits in it, then light it and it goes under the pot in the stand. If you use oil it’s for cooking small cubes of meat in the pot

Good morning on this very chilly - 16 °C very bright snowy day. Good girl for working out. Bravo to Seth for his valiant first attempt @ 🍰 🎂 making. Flavoring & frosting can be fixed easily the next time. I was impressed that it didn't flop . It Rose beautifully. He'll know to put parchment down the next time. Nothing like experience. Cakes are tricky. Ryan's commentary on the variety at the meat counter made me giggle! Not your average selection that's for sure! The house looks festive. Beautiful tree in the corner, the little ornaments beside it on the table, and of course the gingerbread 🏠 house on the 🏝️ island . Fondue look yummy. Pretty sure you'll try different techniques for that. Thanks for the visit.❤

(Isabel Jobe) I remember when fondue sets were all the rage, and everyone got one for a wedding present. We did! Never used it, it wasn’t as nice as yours, I think they are a bit of a novelty, but at least you have a decent pot that you can use if you don’t use it again!

Ohhh Seth bless you. I think you need to do a bit of baking with Mum for basic cake making and I’m sure you will make lovely cakes. I used to bake with my granddaughter and one day my grandson said “Nanny can I bake something and I taught him how to make lemon drizzle cake and then he could make it I alone perfectly well I look forward to seeing him bake some nice things when he knows how to do things ❤

Yes the fondue should use the forks provided and cubes of food, also use oil and cook as well as cheese, fondue nut from the 80s 😂

I did exactly the same thing Fern with the fondue, when I came to use it I didn't have the burners, which is a gel paste thing from Amazon. Good on Seth for having a go, enjoyed as always 👍

Right that's done it. I've had a fondue set, still in it's box, in the useless corner kitchen cupboard for 30 years. I'm gonna get it out and use it now I've seen how good your meal looked. I just hope the 30 year old teas maid set doesn't fret when he loses his friend.

Also the fondue is normally eaten by fixing cubes of French bread on forks and dipping into the cheese mixture in the hot pan. Enjoy.

I'm thinking Seth is playing 3D Chess,because he negotiated to get that last piece of cake by saying he'd make another one. He proceeds to mess up the kitchen and the cake, thereby resulting in him probably never again being asked to make one or anything else for that matter. Checkmate!

Fern love your doing Vlogmas. Watching you do Fondue may I suggest you purchase 2 set of RACLETTE cookers. It is a form of cooking, similar to fondue. It originated in Wales and Switzerland. You set RACLETTE COOKER on the table and plug in. There is a top element about 12”x5” approx you cook your meats, and vegetables on, and underneath, you slide small 4” pans is for heating small potatoes and cheese. I have 2 and that way the food is continually being cooked so you don’t have to wait so long. I cut up steak, chicken, and have shrimp etc. I place each in a separate dish on the table. You can marinate meat if you like. Then I place in separate dishes peppers, green onion, yellow, red onion, mushrooms, any other vegetables to go with the meat. Then I steam very small baby potatoes, place in a bowl, have a bowl of slices of RACLETTE CHEESE. So everything is pre cut and set on the table. Then you all sit down and place whatever YOU like on the cooker on top and place the potatoes and cheese on the bottom rack to melt cheese. It is a WONDERFUL guest or family experience. You will find you spend some real quality time interacting because while the food is cooking you have a wonderful time laughing and telling stories. My family has done this for years, I’m so fortunate to have experienced this. You can buy RACLETTE cookers online I’m sure.

We always did our shopping at Leclerc Juan les Pins. We loved it. It was a much smaller shop though. What about Auchan or Carrefour? Did you try them? All that weird bits of meat, they were labelled Viande pour animaux, so you can give them to the dogs. I have a neighbour who has two little dogs same breed as Sugar, and she always gives them kidneys and hearts, raw. A bit strange for me, would you give Sugar and Sylvia raw meat? By the way, Seth is a natural in the kitchen!🙂😉 He definetly needs guidance and ecouragement!☺️❤❤❤

At least Seth tried to bake. He just needs a little help. I saw when Ryan picked up that pig tongue that I have only seen beef tongue. It's very delicious it tastes like roast beef. You just add water and boil it and seasonings. Until it's soft and tender. Tongue sandwiches are good. Bye❤

New fondue set: No tealight! Check the instructions please. You need to fill the round thingy with a modest quantity of methylated spirit, put in place, and then light it with a match. Be careful. Check the instructions again please. Have fun! BTW stir this pot only.with a wooden spoon, please! If the heat under the pot gets too hot, place the lid of the thingy on top please. The feast looked great !

Viande pour animaux above the offal = meat for animals. Well done Seth for making a cake with no help whatsoever and being okay with the ridicule that followed. Given that he made it known that he was going to make cake, getting out the ingredients and a tin would have been a help. Sorry but I felt so sorry for him. x
