You definitely don’t need to just stick to one gift for each category, I think. For books you could get a book series, for arts and crafts, you could get a pad of paper, some paintbrushes, a palette and some paints as one gift. You could put them all wrapped individually in one big box.

When my oldest was, I think 4, and was asking to add things to her list a day or two before Christmas, we made a new rule the following year. Kids can ask for 3 gifts. They have to tell us before the end of October what those 3 things are. The rest of the gifts are suprises. It has really helped me with setting boundaries for myself. I don't end up with an endless list, and they are able to pick 3 things they really want BEFORE the influence of all the ads pops up... those toy ads that come in the mail... so if they end up wanting something after that, it's expected that they can just 1. Save up for it, 2. Use any money they get from relatives for it 3. If someone else asks them what they want they have an answer, or 4. They can put it on their list for birthdays. It also helps to be able to do this and get the "surprises" that are things I find on sale throughout the year based on their interests. I think the important thing is to figure out what works for your family though. Explaining how big gifts can also be kept for birthday wish lists because on birthdays you aren't buying for EVERYONE, and only for the kid, so there is more of a budget for big gifts, is helpful too.
