Standing seam roofs look great but wow are they expensive. I'm going with metal panels on the sides of the home and shop. Plywood panels would not hold up nearly as well here in the heat and humidity of Tennessee.

Hi. I'd be interested to know what product you use to combat the heat and humidity. We also don't have an insect issue here like in some places so that's another thing to think of I guess?

@@Boxplanet I will be spray applying a product called Rub-R-Wall Aqua to the ICF below and above grade all the way to the roof line before applying the metal panels. The Rub-R-Wall Aqua is UV rated spray on rubber membrane that makes and excellent water/vapor barrier as well as protecting the ICF blocks from fireants and termites that can burrow into the ICF material looking for wood or other nutrients. There is probably and very similar product that is manufactured in the UK or EU that you can purchase at a reasonable price unless Rub-R-Wall Aqua is made in the UK or EU as well. In any case, ALL ICF homes need a good quality vapor barrier to prevent water from getting into the blocks and saturating the concrete inside. As a secondary measure, I am adding Xypex to the concrete as well.

Hi again. Yes. This is critical and one point where I didn't pay enough attention. I have some water coming into the building at the moment and I'm applying and external system to stop this.

Caught up as of today! I was looking at getting a visual reference for all your groundworks...ended up being enchanted by the whole project. Am budgeting my project now and that starts in a couple of months. Me, my dog and I. And my boys helping from time to time too! Keep up the great work!

@@Boxplanet I'm up in the North West. An end Terrace with nice space to rear and side... Won the property at auction... Not exchanged just yet (should be a couple of weeks time)... I'm deep in the depths of budgeting, costing and planning the whole thing (I have a fixed renovation budget). Doing it all without tradesmen. Havent't done many things before but I have time... Onwards and upwards.

Hi Alex. Being really frank, what was the finished quality like of your Zinc roof? We have some rippling in the panels (minimal but there) and tool marks where the seams are folded. I do think our contractor is a good one, I just want to understand the expectation others have...

Hi Chris. I'm really happy with the end product. I've crawled over it and probably been more closely involved that most, doing all the enabling works. Especially as the main facades have been clad in the same material. I haven't noticed anything that detracts from the overall presentation. It is a handmade product that is crafted on site so I always bear this in mind when looking at the overall result. Rippling panels (oil canning, quilting) is unavoidable due to the memory of the rolled metal. It can be minimised, but not eliminated. I'm told that some people like it, but personally I don't. We've managed to minimise it luckily, but it is still there. Time of day, temperature and colour of the zinc all play a part. I like to think of my installation as having its own fingerprint, with it's own character and minor flaws. A bit like all of us :)
