Bob Hope makes a surprise guest appearance on The Milton Berle Show (9-30-66) making fun of each other's styles and wind up singing a rousing rendition of "Bosom Buddies." (Please excuse the quality of this video, as it was recorded on Sony's first home video recorder in 1966!)

That was real comedy by actual comedians. We don't have that kind of entertainment or actors/comedians of that that caliber today and never will from now on.

Jonathan L Yes ofc, I lol to Louis CK, Letterman, Ricky Gervais and so on. But Hope and Milton and that generation makes me smile and feel good for a long time. Louis and the present ones dont, they entertainment is only for the moment and then you dont feel it any more.

Interesting to see Bob & Milton imitate each other's comedic delivery style. Bob had to play it more broadly & energetic when he was copying Berle. Berle had to clam down his persona and take a more clam laid-back manner when he copied Bob.

I liked that VHS tracking distortion! It brought back many memories of trying to edit the notorious VHS tapes. PS This is a VHS or VCR recording from a TV show; there was no home video in 1966
@GaryKaskel
@GaryKaskel 5 жыл бұрын
In fact, Sony sold the first "home video recorder" starting in 1965, the CV2000 which used 1/2" reel-to-reel tape. The console model had a wooden case with a 9" black and white monitor built in. The technology was crude and used the skip-field method of recording the NTSC signal in which only every other field was recorded, giving the playback a less than live look, but decent resolution. This tape was recorded by Mr. Berle's head writer for his private collection. It was dubbed to a VHS tape in the 1980s and then digitized a few years ago, which is what you see here. The distortion is from the reel-to-reel playback on the original tape. I know, because I did it myself.

In 1985 while walking north on Madison Avenue in NYC, coming the other way was Milton himself. I was walking and smoking and excellent Romeo y Julieta Double Corona. As he, passed me, he gazed longingly at my cigar. I promptly handed him my second one saying "Have one on me, Mr. Berle". He paused looking at it and replied, "My Doctor says "NO"."

For those who state that Berle's star had fallen by this time, his pinnacle of popularity over, necessitating his need to grab any guest-spot he could get, well, the truth is, Milton didn't have to work during these years. NBC had him signed-up for a multi-million dollar contract wherein he wasn't allowed to do a weekly show on any other network. In short, the comic was paid not to work. Regardless of this, Berle sometimes had to beg NBC to let him appear as a guest on other programs due to his desire to work, despite the fact he already was financially set for life.

WHAT? this is what passed for comedy in 1966? i like it. they did an entire 8 minutes without one "f" word. remarkable. i didn't think that was possible. the "f" word has so degenerated our culture it now appears on t-shirts, bumper stickers and protest signs. its in every comedy routine, song, movie and tv show. it inundates the internet and youtube. i'm glad there was a period in human history that demonstrated a little decorum and common decency. lets bring back a time when the "f" word is redelegated to the gutter where it belongs. (YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW OFTEN I'M ATTACKED FOR SAYING THIS!)

Felt sorry more milt...he went from being IT on TV to just getting guest spots on other shows and specials later on. Even here he was losing his popularity. The show just never got going really that he had gotten during this time. You started seeing him in things you just two-line do unless you just wanted to be in pictures and movies. I loved Milton. WAAAAAY before my time but I still love watching the oldies. So sad how bad the world is now. Things were much simpler in the 50s and early 60s.
