The Last Phantom The Pharewell

For over 40 years the German air force has flown the F4 Phantom. In june 2013 an era of active duty came to an end. A tribute to a fighter plane!

Die 37+01 war viele Jahre im JG72 in Rheine. Damals habe ich selber noch an der alten Dame geschraubt. War eine tolle Zeit, nein sicher die beste Zeit meines Lebens. Werde nie vergessen wie man leichte Wellen im Kaffee hatte wenn morgens die erste Rutsche raus gegangen ist oder man nach der Spätschicht mit gutem Gefühl in den Unterkunftsbereich gefahren ist wenn wir als Team wieder mal Wunder bewirkt haben und die letzt Mühle die am nächsten Tag unbedingt fliegen sollte, doch noch klar war. Von Komandos, tollen Kammeraden und der Faszination für das Flugzeug will ich garnicht anfangen. Wird nie wieder werden wie damals.

I was an US Navy Aviation Mechanic 1966-1970. My squadron was VF-103 and we had 12 F4-J Phantoms. J79-10 GE engines. We flew from NAS Oceana and were deployed on the USS Saratoga CV60. Wir hatten die F-4F Phantom II früher auch bei uns in Rheine - Hopsten! Leider wurde dort Ende 2005 der Flugbetrieb endgültig eingestellt, Und der Eurofighter Typhoon war für Rheine - Hopsten nicht mehr vorgesehen. Nach Wittmund bin ich auch ganz gerne hingefahren und fahre heute noch gerne hin. Als Insider weiß man ob Flugbetrieb ist oder auch nicht, Da muss man nur drauf achten ob die Platzfeuerwehr draußen steht oder nicht. Oder ob sich das Bodenradar dreht, Heute wird man wenn man am Flugplatzzaun steht auch wohl mal enttäuscht. Aber nichts desto trotz, Die Phantom hatte einen Super Triebwerksklang angefangen vom Anlassen der Triebwerke im Flug sowieso bis hin zum Abstellen der Triebwerke. Gruß Patrick!

At Leeward Point ( Gitmo) the F4s would hold the brakes , go 100% and go full A/B down the runway . On going airborne they would stand on the tail and rocket straight up to avoid Cuban airspace. It was like an airshow . geoff

Thats for sure a great spectacle to see and hear! We had the 32TFS here at Soesterberg AFB with F15s. when the scrambles took off they often when ballistic as in vertical TO .

Absolutely phabulous! Never seen such editing - it is simply amazing and paying appropriate tribute to this iron bird and the Luftwaffe. Still remeber when they were buzzing us Jack Tars in the Baltic and North Seas back in the 1980ies - simply loved it and was so envious not being up there. The F4 as Cold War aircraft has always been my favourite, its brute force, its shark-like appearance and the trailing smoking have always made it a gentleman's plane. So hats off to Vincent Kok for this amazing film of an era that is regrettably gone!
