Ghana’s 2019 Year of Return marks the 400th anniversary of the brutal Trans-Atlantic slave trade. The country has launched a monumental "homecoming" campaign, aimed at persuading people of African descent to return to Africa to live, to visit and to invest. This week, #VOAOurVoices looks back at Ghana's Year of Return. We take you to the capital, Accra, to speak to "returnees" about their decision. Angeline Addy, from the Embassy of Ghana in Washington joins the program. The team also discusses the challenges and realities facing Africans who "return home".

Why the negative comments. This was very informative. Not everything about returning to Africa must be romanticised. I moved back to Ghana when I was 27 from London and after 6 years of living there I decided to make both UK and Ghana my home instead of just dedicating myself to one location. Because at the end of the day both places has its perks NO WHERE ON EARTH is perfect and we need to start to see ourselves as global citizens of the world and not just a location.
@u.s.lawyer8542
@u.s.lawyer8542 4 жыл бұрын
By your moniker I assume you are tied to the white music industry which requires selling spiritual poison to blacks for profit. Some of us are not just concerned about perks. Ghana was colonized by the UK and is still being exploited the UK. Your obligation as a African is to work as a agent for Africa to repatriate stolen resources from the UK to Africa. I have homes and businesses in the US and several African countries. I was born in the US, but my native home is Africa. European societies will never truly see Africans as citizens of those countries. We are global citizens of Africa which is not located in one geographical location - it is located in your heart. In the end, you will never be truly accepted in Europeans societies and YOUR ULTIMATE DEGREE OF ACCEPTANCE IS DEPENDANT UPON THE RISE AND PROSPERITY OF ONE PLACE ON EARTH - AFRICA. So, you keep believing the delusion, some of us will continue work for the prosperity of our people on the earth as it really exists.

Ghana has already earned 1.9 billion dollars from year of return this year a lone. Many who thought Africa was a jungle had a different mindset about Africa after they visited Ghana. The economy is gaining ground and people from the diaspora are trooping in. There are challenges in every economy but give and take Ghana is much better and holding its own.

These lovely ladies are so comfortable with their lives in the US and seem to be scared of returning to Africa. Fact is, Africa is rising, and needs talented people to join in building and rebranding Africa. There're many resources in Africa, and with our exposure, education and wealth gained abroad, we should start thinking of returning and setting up small scale businesses all over Africa. The western world is fully build and congested, but there're unlimited opportunities in Africa. Those franchise like Starbucks can be rebrand in Africa, raw materials like caffee, cocoa, etc. can be processed to add value before being exported. Jobs will be created and our people will have hope. Remember ladies, until we develop Africa, blacks will never be respected. For our dignity sake, we must sacrifice and uplift Africa for our next generation.

I get the impression that non of these women are real African Americans.That sounds offensive but this show appear to be pretending that they are telling the story ofdescendents of slavery in the diaspora when they are really having the story of children of African parents.This appear to be a phony pretense to allow recent immigrants to replace long term diaspora people who have suffered hundreds of years of brutality,rape ,murder and betrayal to now have young people who have never suffered in blood and terror to pretend these groups care the same.We need to bring about a healing and not divisiveness and betrayal.African Americans have suffered far too much to have recent immigrants pretend they are us.Some of those young ladies should have pointed out the difference.The show should have had sense enough to clarify the difference.There are those who want conflict and confusion among African people.We should not hate each other so much that we cooperate in each others destruction.The Year of Return even though narrowly defined meant a certain group of people.

There are aAfrican Americans and other diasporans who have permanently moved to Ghana and are enjoying it there. Bob Marley's wife is currently citizen of Ghana. There's even African American Association in Ghana today. Funny how they only spoke with the skeptics.

I think the best thing to consider is to know why you want to go to Africa. You can't just wake up one day and say I'm going because Africa is calling. A lot of people have succeeded and making it. Those who find it difficult to settle are probably the ones who didn't do any research before moving to Africa. We must also understand that not everyone can make it in their own way. Sometimes we must consult and cooperate.

The Year of Return is not a free for all and all protocols are out the window! They aren't stupid 🙄🙄 it was a beautiful opportunity and many ppl will benefit from it for years to come. Good on Ghana for leading this initiative. Hopefully other African countries will do the same as the years progress.

Just imagine, and that’s one nation on the continent that will open up. To me it’s not so much about “Pan-Africanism”, it’s about a better feeling of security and equality. My prediction is that in the next 30+ years there will be millions of black Americans leaving the U.S. and migrating to the continent. Why are they even weighing the idea of going back to Africa, why they do not question people when they go on holidays is London, Dubai, Madrid, Lisbon, Malta etc. After the Ghanaian ambassador left those ladies got to show their negative and division mind set which the Europeans impose on Africans by dividing Africa into countries at the Berlin conference cos they not Ghanaians they not defending the ideas of inviting AA back home cos is Ghana doing it. As for the Indian host i don’t wanna say much go to Kenya and I can tell you over 10 millions Indians live there for three generations and they call it home, so please don’t confuse African Americans about coming to Africa to build their house and swimming pools and live like Kings they once was. Two tribes may be at war they will support one to defeat the other and those that surrender they will capture them. Bro pls visit the slaves fort they build back in those years and it will tell you their wicked minds and agenda. Read more on the British and the Ashanti’s war

Ras Vigour Of course Africans were selling to Europeans. People in Africa were practicing slavery long before any Europeans set foot in that land. They wouldn’t have been able to do so without Africans aiding them in trades. Your inability to come to grips with this truth is why we can’t get anywhere.

Ghana is open to business. Businesses every strive on the back of hardwork and good strategies. It is so in Ghana as well. But also, returnees shouldn't be ready to stay in Accra only. I was wondering where the African American descendants of slaves were on the programme; not one of the ladies was one. They all either came to America with African parents or immigrated from Africa to America. This is a flaw and means the programme did not bring those concerned to the table. Even the two women returnees interviewed in Ghana are children of African parents, of the 5,000 plus African Americans & other diasporans living in Ghana, could they not find at least one to interview? Very disappointing. Did VOA forget that the Year of Return is primarily for diasporans who are descendants of slaves? Why waste the Ghanaian embassy's spokesperson's time? Overall there was bias reporting leaning on the negative. I have watched countless videos where diasporans (descendants of slaves that is) have positive experiences in Africa (not just Ghana) and sadly this panel of women did not seem to find one! Shame on you VOA Our Voices (the wrong voices more like)!!!

@Charles brown I am a Ghanaian living in the diaspora soon to return (in case you think I am a bitter descendant of the enslaved hence my comment above - and your mention of land will make me happy ☺ , not so) a Ghanaian paramount chief and his council are giving free land to descendants of slaves in the diaspora wanting to come to Ghana to settle, I know that and I am pleased, but my comment is about VOA Voices not including this aforementioned group of diasporans for which this year of Return is focused on the panel or even in interviews... why???

African Queen they shown their division mind set cos they not Ghanaians but Zimbabwe etc forgetting Africa is one people and was divided by the Europeans into countries at the Berlin conference. Because is Ghana doing it they can’t see the positivity. As for the Indian host over 10 million Indians live in Kenya and the run majority of the businesses there and been there over three generations. So where is the negativity of Africa Americans returning back home.

This is very bias👎🏾 Why was the focus of the entire show on the negativity ?? Each of these panelists know the very essence of the Year Of Return Yet y'all travelled down to Ghana to come report on this ..??? What happened to the beautiful stories ? No matter how rosy a destination is being painted to you , it's never easy settling in and acclimatizing to a new environment especially when you have high expectations , u would always be on the look out for the potholes, it's normal human nature. It's a matter of time , they will be fine . You guys did not do a thorough research on the subject matter else you would have known about the many beautiful opportunities the Government of Ghana has put in place for it's returnees who want to settle in Ghana . I would advise anyone who wants to return should go through the right policies , get informed as much as possible before making the step to avoid being "disappointed " . And the Year of Return is not a "marketing Push" 👎🏾 and no one is out there to exploit your skills and coins , If you really want to return home for the primary vision of the Year of Return , Do it , if you get to the motherland and want to settle in , Do it . If you settle in and wish to do nothing and want your knowledge and skills you have achieved over the years go waste , DO IT😀 (that won't be a smart choice though ) . Let's be guided people and mind you, this show belongs to America and don't be gullible to think America is happy about the year of Return especially when it's about hitting a brain drain as the African -American is being emancipated and returns home ! With much Love from a Ghanaian Medical Student and Media Personnel residing in Ukraine 🇺🇦

Where are the men?? 50% of the population’s story is missing... since y’all took it to the female sex thing... I went to Ghana in the spring of 2019 and enjoyed it very much. I was saddened that African Americans are CHARGED to visit the castles where their ancestors were stocked and traded. Tasteless. I was also hurt that Europeans and descendants of the survivors of the slave trade were mixed together in the same groups to tour these sites, the former having no real connection and the latter being torn to their hearts and were forced to share these intimate moments with oftentimes descendants of their ancestors’ oppressors. I could write a book... Maybe I will...
