On this program, Caty Weaver and Mario Ritter, Jr. host the show. Caty tells listeners what they are going to hear.
(:50) First, Caty has a story about a big yearly event in America. Known as “The Big Game,” the Super Bowl has become a major part of American life. The first Super Bowl took place in January 1967. In Sunday’s game, the Kansas City Chiefs will try to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles to win their third championship in a row.
(5:50) Then, Jill Robbins and John Russell present our Everyday Grammar program. This week, Jill and John examine patterns in English. They discuss sentence structure that is common in academic writing. Today’s lesson looks at intransitive verbs. What are intransitive verbs and how are they used? Intransitive verbs do not need an object. But they are often linked with things like adverbial clauses or phrases which give additional information. Listen and learn a lot about these structures that are more important to writing than you think.
(13:51) This week on Ask a Teacher, Andrew Smith answers a question from Ramatoulaye in Senegal about the difference between the words “regarding” and “regardless.” Andrew also explains the use of the verb “regard.” Examples show how these terms are best used and how they help speaks talk about things that might or might not affect what they are trying to explain or talk about.
(18:32) Finally, part two of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” gives the history of the sad owner of an old house in a mysterious place. A visiting childhood friend bears witness to Usher’s story and to the apparent death of his twin sister. But the horror builds with small details that increase the expectation of a terrible end.
Then, Caty and Mario sign off.
