2 of them, Wheein and Hwasa, have been friends for the past 11 years, since they were 13, and they pursued their dreams of being singers together. The other 2, Solar and Moonbyul, were put together with them later. Now, those 2 are also really close, and all 4 of them get along really well. They're practically sisters, and I do think this impacts how well they sound together

Also, they were all trainees at rbw and thats how they were formed. But members hwasa and wheein was actually childhood friends and they auditioned at rbw together and they both got in.

To answer your question about their background: Wheein & Hwasa grew up together since middle school when they were around 13 (?) or something and then ended up debuting in the same group, whereas moonbyul and solar joined later when they all signed to their current label. Moonbyul and Wheein knew each other from a previous label and moonbyul was the 3rd to join the group after wheein & hwasa and then solar came last Hope this helped :)

Basically any Immortal Song 2 performance by Mamamoo is worth reacting to. They also had two Sugarman performances. I am also a fan of of their commercial MV, "Woo Hoo". The MV is older, but I thought it was a great display of their vocal skills for an MV.

Solar is indeed amazing but I wouldn't say she's the best vocalist our there in a kpop girl group. Wheein and Hwasa are talented main vocalists too. In fact, wheein's vocal technique is ranked the first in mamamoo (by KVA), both Hwasa and Wheein's are praised by a lot of musicians. That's just my opinion but I respect yours too (I'm not trying to start a war or sth and it's ok for you to disagree with me)

Mamamoo vocals are no joke but for me solar stands out ( i study music too and i feel in love with their voice) wheein stand out in technic and hwasa voice's is really different and versatile, also byul too. Solar is my favorite bcs she can be versatile, powerful and has this unique nasal sounds in her voice that surprise me in the first time I heard mamamoo (they go really hard in decalcomanie especially she)... this shook me bcs I didn't know someone with her tone can go so high, I bet she worked really harder. But overall, mamamoo is the queen of vocals, I really appreciate all of them, and don't worry Haha I'll never stared a fan war in such a respectful comment like yours ( sorry for bad English)

Personally, I like wheein’s voice the best but I get that others might like solar’s or hwasa’s better. You and your mom are adorable. Yeah earlier Mamamoo’s style of music definitely reminded of R&B girl groups from the 90’s with their harmonizing. A big K-pop producer said that they remind him of En Vogue, which I can see. If you like their jazzy/R&B songs, I really like their song Words Don’t Come Easy. Their live version of I Miss You they sang on Queendom is fantastic as well.

This is mostly Solar. Hwasa and Wheein can sing high notes but it's Solar who belt and has the powerful voice. But they wouldn't sound that good without the blend of their voices. Moonbyul completes the perfection which is mamamoo. OT4 💕

I think others have answered your question about MMM's background. They've been together over 5 years and their chemistry and synergy is magical. There are lots of jazz, swing and bossa nova tracks that show off their harmonies and individual vocal styles but imo their vocal masterpiece in a recording studio is the unusual ballad Paint Me - not many harmonies but I think you'll appreciate the vocal arrangement and the vocal gymnastics. Their skill at arranging the parts to weave their very different timbres and vocal styles to create a mesmerizing song-story doesn't often get mentioned but I think it's one of the reasons some people say Mamamoo is a genre unto itself. Here are a few jazzy songs: 30's jazz: Recipe (note the way they imitate muted trumpets and the Louis Armstrong growl lol) Swing: Piano Man Bossa Nova: Words Don't Come Easy, Waggy Hwasa is esp known for her solo jazz covers such as Orange Colored Sky and Fly Me to the Moon and she's done some fab bossa and r&b covers on a tv show called Yu Huiyeol's Sketchbook. Some of best are titled in Korean so they can be hard to find unless you search on Hwasa + the show name. There's also an amazing duet on that show by Hwasa & Wheein on a song written for them called Loving One Person. The song was written for a competition program called "Hyena on the Keyboard", where the conceit is to pair two musicians (or small groups) who never worked together, and have them try to write a "hit song". "Don't" was only performed for the show, then for a couple more live/variety shows, but it actually accomplished the Hyena goal.

RBW is their agency. I think they caught lightning in a bottle because they haven't had nearly the same success with their other groups. I think the reason is that these four while having vocal talent didn't look like the typical K-Pop idols and so were passed over by other agencies. It took RBW to recognize their talent and put them together. Kim Do Hoon is their songwriter, I think. He deserves a lot of credit, too.

How did they become a group? They were kinda manufactured, put together by a company. Well, except Wheein and Hwasa were best friends from middle school, but it wasn't a given that they'd debut together. The company basically grabbed 4 of the best singers they could find and had them practice together. It helps that, eventually, all the members clicked and became close friends. And then they started harmonizing with each other for fun and... Well... Their skill made many memorable moments of them just messing around and still sounding amazing. The reason they became so skilled is actually kinda sad. It's because the members aren't considered traditionally beautiful by Korean standards. They were told by their company that, since they weren't gonna be able to rely on looks to gain mass popularity, they had to rely on skill instead. And so they practiced and practiced and eventually became so good that normal Koreans took notice. They became well known for being amazing singers, with many artists wanting to work with them for the sheer talent they possess. Many serious seniors in the industry have decided that Mamamoo are worthy of some of their highest praise.
