Eva was almost unknown in the USA. She became famous in England. Sting loved her version of Fields of Gold - he said that is how he imagined it when he wrote it. Sting bought all Eva's CD's he could find, then gave them to all he knew in the London music industry. Thanks Sting.

Most individuals who respond to Eva's technique often overlook her exceptional guitar skills. I saw a video of her band mates commenting on this live performance and learned that Eva actually had a cold, which might be responsible for the 2 or 3 minor glitches you hear in her voice. If you listen to other recordings of Eva, you can hear the difference. Her voice, unbelievably, was even clearer without a cold. But, I think the slight huskiness in her lower register and those little glitches when she is singing very quietly, make her performance even more satisfying to listen to. After hearing her sing this song for the first time, I realized that although I had heard Over the Rainbow hundreds of times, I had never actually HEARD Over the Rainbow before!

With no disrespect to Miss Garland, I think Eva Cassidy has chosen the best perspective to use with this particular song and these particular lyrics. What most of us are familiar with, when we were all introduced to this song, was that it was sung by a little girl from Kansas named Dorothy who had just (no surprise) actually been over a rainbow, and from her lips and her perspective, it seemed simply to be relaying current events. What we know, from behind the scenes that it was written by a song writing team of Harold Arleen (music) & Yip Harburg (lyrics) which contained the deeper, adult perspective on the challenge of pinning your life’s hopes on dreams, when all too often the shortcomings and despair of of life can make us jaded to the idea. The warmth of Eva’s voice, coming from the adult’s perspective, while not ignoring any of the world's heartbreaks and troubles, still assures us that “dreams really do can come true”. It's from this perspective that the metaphorical aspects of the lyrics resonate a little deeper, given that we are all too familiar with the bittersweet and often tragic nature of life and the sadness that it inevitably brings to everyone

A true masterpiece. I’ve been around a long time and for me Eva is the greatest courier of song I’ve ever witnessed. If you have time review her performance of Autumn Leaves from this same gig. In my humble opinion it’s the greatest vocal moment in recorded history. It’s simply phenomenal. Also it was the first time her pianist Lenny Williams was asked by Eva to add to the song. It’s absolutely beyond words. Enjoy!! For she is a true gift from heaven. 🎺

"Transporting you" is a very good way to describe her amazing performance here. Her voice gently wraps around you and takes you away. I've listened many times and she always leaves me in a silent, often tearful, awe which always takes awhile to come back from, it's just so perfect. Eternally thankful for the gift of Eva Cassidy. Eva was more than masterful‼️Divine, she literally pulls you in, to every word, while masterfully plays the guitar, as if they all just "fit," together----‼️I feel as if am floating along with her VOICE‼️ WHY, did we have to loose such a unique Talented Wonderful Person. She's So Amazing just Eva, & her guitar! Yet she doesn't draw attention to the fact she's also playing a instrument. You Look at her face, & hang on to her sweet, soothing voice!!! Regarding the vocal crack towards the end, it is worth noting that Eva was actually dealing with a cold during the recording session, which made her hesitant to release the songs. However, thankfully, she was convinced otherwise and decided to share them with the public.

What I had always heard as hope and inspiring, she presented as a yearning and a longing, almost from a place of desperation and it fits the lyrics perfectly. A true masterpiece. Eva's band was desperate to get something on record(no record contract), so they scraped together enough of their own money to have a friend with a mobile recording setup do a live two night session at Blues Ally. The first nights recording was unusable due to technical issues, so everything depended on the second nights results that was turned into the Live at Blues Ally record. The amateur video of some of that nights performance was unplanned, but resulted in one of the very few examples of Eva preforming her magic. Talent alone won't guarantee success and life isn't always fair, Eva died that same year. Live at Blues Ally didn't chart until two years after she died, she never knew how many people came to lover her music.

It’s Christmas Eve 2023, and I shouldn’t be listening to this. On 08/11/2022, my two year old granddaughter was killed in a tragic accident. The pain has been unmeasurable. Eva sings this so beautifully and with such emotion. Someday through God’s grace, I will see Ryan Grace again, somewhere over the rainbow. 🙏👼

This is my favourite review about Eva Cassidy (and i have seen a lot😂) , I can feel the deep appreciation for her skill. 💚 I just want to say one thing: I think it's not just the eyes but Evas whole being that transports the message of the song, her mimic, the way she plays the guitar... Thanks for your insights into Eva's "Heaven sent" vocal abilities, and I'm glad that you added how hard it is to play an instrument flawlessly while singing. Most reviewers miss that part about Eva. I discovered Eva Cassidy in 2020, and I was so mesmerized with her talents that I've listened to very little music, other than hers, ever since. What else is there when you've heard the best? I describe her as the Holy Grail of Vocalists/Musicians. I was so moved by her gifts that I felt compelled for the first time in my life to write a poem about her. It's about how to avoid her "Siren" sound and keep from ending up like me. Title: "Séduit par le Premier son d'Eva" "Seduced by the First Sound of Eva" As Odysseus heeded Circe's warning of euphoric demise, so should you also abide. Have yourself tethered to your ship's mast, or you may suffer a similar fate such as mine. Yes, it’s too late for me, for I've heard the enchantment of her Siren sound, and I've sailed too close to her perfection. I've seen her beauty, her golden hair, and I've seen my ship collide amongst the sea-sharpened peaks of her divine inflections. And like iron to a magnet, I've plunged myself into the surrounding waves, and I've swum to her island's shore. Yet, though I die in the meadow of her sweet song, ecstasy abounds o're and o're.

That night they intended to record for a live album, luckily, because it gave us the pristine vocals and guitar quality. I wish they had asked the patron to just move a little so we could have seen the guitar work as she sang all the way through. But as everybody who hears her learns, the performance does not suffer at all. Eva takes an American standard and wrestles us into submission by insisting to bring her own brave interpretation to the song. When we first hear it, she makes us wait for the next note, and then delivers a soft note that forces you to shut up and listen, Not how you might expect, but it pays off for the subtlety and and gentleness, and it works, over and over again. She pulls the listener down her own path to how SHE feels it, and invites you to come along for the journey, and makes everyone glad they did. I also love how you can listen to the song many times and discover new and surprising nuances each time. The phrasing, breath control and delivery make it seem like a new song every time! Eva had the pipes to turn this song into a less emotional sing along that would have blown us all away. But her confidence and integrity compelled her to bring her own heart and soul to the delivery and earned the love and appreciation of millions of fans. God bless you Eva. He broke the mold when you were born . The likes of you will never be seen again. RIP

You should react to Angelina Jordan. She's a young jazz singer from Norway who won Norway's got talent at the age of 8. I would suggest her concert performance of "What a difference a day makes" when she was 8 years old.
