Vocal Coach Ken Tamplin gives his analysis of Layne Staley and Alice In Chains LIVE on Man In The Box!
Vocal Coach Reaction to Layne Staley - Alice In Chains - Man In The Box - Live - Ken Tamplin
It's a shame we had so many talented rock singers from the 90s leave us so early.
Lane Staley is one of those people.
His raw emotion, crazy energy, desperate passion, haunting emotion and stage presence was unprecedented for many of the rock singers from the 90s.
One of his most electric pieces was Man In A Box.
So I thought it appropriate to use this song as a vocal coach reaction and demonstrate myself what it takes to achieve this kind of power, authority and emotion in a song.
I also covered this song with my student Gabriela Gunčíková. I will put the link in the description below the video for anyone interested in checking it out.

@@AlphaMachina you're full of it. Layne never blew his voice out. And after watching a bunch of these vocal coach reaction videos I've never heard one say Layne was in doing things wrong or in danger of blowing his voice out. Or even really straining. I've only heard two of these vocal coaches say that about any of these grunge singers. And both said Eddie Vedder was in danger of blowing his voice out. And wondered how his voice was today.

And putting that voice with Chris Cornell's voice in hunger strike was genius! All these years later and I can still listen to that song over and over again because of the vocals. The vocals made that song. The lyrics weren't that great, nothing really stood out except those amazing vocals... maybe thats why nothing stood out, because all I could focus on were the vocals. Maybe this guy should have a reaction to that song. Since he is a vocal coach... maybe he already did lol, I need to check.... oh and what made me think of that in the first place is I was trying to imagine Layne singing in that song as well...

it makes no sense to me... most songs don't censor the word BITCH, bastard... pussy. But wow shit is so vulgar???. Swear words are just made up by man... taking the lord's name in vain is the only swear word and that never gets censored. You don't have to put damn in it.... Just say GOD when you are made... and you swore lol... that is one of the big ten breakers. All the other ones are just words that man made up... who gives a fuck about those lol... can sing about stabbing and killing someone, raping someone, blowing a man's brains out.... having sex... so long as you say screw instead of the big F... its ok. If I was listening to a song with my kids when they were young, I would of rather heard them say the word shit than talk about blowing someone's brains out

From what I've read about Layne he wasn't a spiritual guy, but everybody has to have those one sided talks with whatever's out there sometimes, you can really feel what he was going through with the lyrics to "God Am" where he basically just has an angry conversation with god about his heroin addiction and why god doesnt give him a hand if hes all powerful. the whole thing reads like a drawn out prayer. "Dear god, how have you been then?" then a response to the lack thereof: "I'm not fine, fuck pretending." hes frustrated that god, if he is listening, hasnt helped him. It's really a shame what happened to Layne he was one of the greatest poets and vocalists of the late 20th century, Dirt, Facelift and the Self Titled album really helped get me through my uncle's heroin overdose a year back. Hope Layne is remembered for his contributions as he should be instead of just being remembered for the sad parts.

This is the only person on youtube singing while reacting to the songs... most of other "vocal coaches" if not all of them, just talk and talk but nothing of singing, specially when it comes to voices like that, or Chester Bennington, rock in general or anything involving high level of technique, they are all full of stories and theory, but Ken is the REAL DEAL... I have never seen anyone doing like this guy, demonstrating like it is so EASY while talking normally... Dude just explain the techniques while doing very fast and simultaneously the whole variety of techniques from the original song... that is INSANE. Ken Tamplin is definitely the only vocal coach worth it paying... I'm getting his course soon, just saving some $$$ for it now, it's worth it, I'm sure.

Hey Ken & to ne1 else reading this: I thought u might like2 know that a girl i dated lived in Seatle & dated a guy whose band practiced @ this warehouse where a lot of local bands practiced. Long story fairly short, her boyfriends band ended up partying 1 day with Alice in Chains after practice ( b4 they were famous). She said they were smoking/drinking sitting on couches with AiC( I was very jealous) then he belted out some a Capella & she said he was " a force of nature!" My opinion, him & Cornell r by far th best of 90s & r in th all-time gr8s list easily!

You are one of the few teachers on KZbin. Who I’ve heard can actually sing without forcing it. There are far too many “voice teachers” popping up reacting to these songs. Then I watch their own music covers and I am just wondering if they ever taught a lesson in their life. Like you said, the proof is in the singing. Layne for example was underrated in my opinion.

I grew up in seattle area in the 90's. AiC was always my favorite. Loved Layne's vocals way more than kurt's or eddie's. Also back in the GnR prime they didn't even have a set list... they just started with a song and went from there.

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy - Any time Ken! I’m not a vocalist but it’s really interesting hearing you break down each MSU gets style. I remember watching that Man in the Box video you made a few years back and I remember you changing the lyrics lol! Would really love to hear what you think about Laynes love performances. To me AIC were always better live! Another good one might be TOOL SOBER- At the Reading Festival, Maynard’s performance was ridiculous! Also AIC Unplugged!! Nutshell or Down in. Hole - this was at a point where Laynes health was really deteriorating so it’s very emotional but he still sounds amazing!! Thanks again!
