tnx for the nice episode. it is embarrassing to admit, but bcs of some prejudice against my family elders, i have never listened to this type of music before seeing one on your channel. which is weird bcs Homayoun and his late father are both extremely famous with Persian people not just Iranians.

Yes, that is correct. He is singing quite sad lyrics. It's hard to fully translate it, but: "Dastato bardar" means take your hands off... He is talking to his sadness! and saying: "A sadness sitting on my chest and doesn't let me breathe...take your hands off.... take your hands off my throat"

don't feel bad that you don't understand the meaning. i'm from Iran, and i need to listen multiple times to understand the lyric. mainly bcs the type of lyrics and vocal style is very different from newer Musical genres. the phrase is "remove your hands from my throat". it looks like he is talking to "sadness that is pressuring his heart like a dark entity from nightmares" in general. but if someone who actually understand the underlying meanings, can explain it to us, it may be something else entirely🤗.

Lyrics are SAD. This IS a cryout. First of all «khabardar» means an all-knowing being, namely GOD. Hence the question to God, in the begining of song: are you awake or drunk? Then the description of the cruel world and humans struggles and personal demons (bakhtak) , and In Persian literature and poetry even things like sorrow and/or God are «personified», to easier adress and talk to. «Ahay» ( hey you ) is the word you use to try to get the attention of someone ( make them aware of the situation ). Like «poking» them. Hope it makes sense.

Good job Nina on your selection. This is Homayoun Shajarian, Persian singer and the son of late Shajarian, and Iranian famous singer. Yes, his voice is very suited for blues, feels sad, perhaps I think the lyric must be sad too. Iranian are famous with these type of singing which seems to be using many fortepiano in their singing, also that waves and flows in their sounds. For many people in that region these type of music and perhaps the singers voice consider to some cures emotionally and some type of meditations. Very comforting and relaxing to hear these voices.

My understanding is that he very nearly cancelled this particular concert following the death of his father shortly before this event, but ultimately decided against that decision and went ahead with the concert. That's why I think he looks and sounds much more emotional in this performance. A song called "Chera Rafti" that he performs during this concert starts with the words " why did you go; why am I restless?" is especially poignant.

This is a clear proof that music is universal. And to understand it, you need to understand music, not a specific language. Lyrics are important for sure, but if the music is well done and the listener is a proficient musician, not knowing the lyrics isn’t a big deal. Once again, your impressions are quite on point. You have an ear for the vocals as a singer and musician that gives you all the info you need! I truly enjoyed watching this video. Thanks for what you do!

His lyrics as you mentioned in the video have often been chosen from some of Iranian greatest and most famous and historical world level poets like maulana(Rumi), Hafez, Sa'di etc. that means those are usually deep and Also most of the time sad or romantic (not in a man and woman way More like between God and lamb). this poem is one very famous as well and because it's called "She're Azad" or "Nima'e", It is very hard to make a melody and find a suitable Rhythm for it. this contemporary poet composed it to actually criticizing the suffocation of "Shah" era in iran in which the Government Would hardly suppress any act of Criticism about no-good situation of Iranians back in 1965 and so.
