Youna Dachicourt no doubt it’s hard to sing. But since she was doing 8 shows a week at this point and wasn’t vocally prepared another song would have suited her better here. Defying Gravity is meant to shut the house down. That’s just the nature of the song. So while it’s competent, it’s not well done. Song selection is key. And I like Barrett!

But before that in Mama Mia, (yes I know some people like that movie. I have no opinions for or against that movie. I'm just talkin singing performances) she really wasn't singing good. If she's controversial, it might have to do with which movie they've seen.

Thank you for always breaking down the difference between a healthy belt and an unhealthy belt. I've never taken voice lessons so I use to always sing in a shouty belt and it just never sounded great. But now since watching your videos I've been able to correct that and, while I only sing for fun, I've been able to really tell a difference in the sound as well as how it feels. She was on Broadway as a kid (she was actually nominated for a Tony at 12) so she has musical theatre technique, I think some people think she's more pop because of Pitch Perfect but she got her start on Broadway :) Here's a live performance she did at the Kennedy Center (within a series of songs) honoring Shirley MacLaine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/noHRmHp7g7aSisU

I am a great admirer of Barrett so this bucket list video has always been disappointing. Her voice obviously wasnt 100% that day and she's pushing (That has always been my opinion of this video, long before Hannah ever commented on it.) This is now two vids Hannah has done -- not intentionally -- of weaker Barrett videos. (The first one was a mixed bag) For balance, I'd like to see commentary perhaps on the two (partial) videos from the Heathers cast album recording session -- seventeen and dead girl walking. Or whatever her best I'd Rather Be Me video is, or even the Apex Predator video... anything super well recorded when she was having a good day. For instance: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnKphWuZea6aqtE

I still believe her voice is quite damaged after Heathers and also Mean Girls. People point out the fact that Erika had nothing during Mean Girls, but maybe Erika has a better voice resistance or Barrette pushed a bit too much, it takes 4-6 weeks for a singer’s voice to fully recover. Also, during Heathers especially, Barrette pushed herself too much and perhaps her voice gained some fragility :(.

I wonder if she tends to sing outside of her comfortable range a lot. Like, I (alto) CAN sing in tune with most male singers but if I do that too much it hurts my voice and I start to sound really raspy and thin like she sounds in some of these songs.

I thinks more the constant belting and notes from heathers since that show was very vocally exhausting (dead girl walking being key) not to mention doing 8 shows a week

I love BWW and fell in love with her belts, but I really do hope that she kinda takes a break to actively care for her voice. I also just love her softer voice, it's just so pretty, and hope she sang with it more. I'm also gonna drop in a suggestion for both Caleb Hyles and Jonathan Young's Disney covers!
