David Phelps is a graduate of Baylor University where he majored in music. (obviously) They wanted him to go into opera but he said no, he wanted to be a gospel singer and he sure has done that and done it well. Best tenor I have ever heard in my lifetime.

There are many videos on You Tube of David. I've followed him for a long time and he is my favorite above all others. He plays the piano, writes and arranges music and his family is quite involved also. His two daughters sometimes sing with him, his sister, his brother in law. I hope you will continue to showcase him with your reactions. His duet with Charlotte Richie called "Fall On Your Knees" is wonderful. "No More Night"....just so many that I can't name them all.

David Phelps studied music at Baylor. They wanted him to concentrate on opera but he knew he wanted to focus on gospel music. One thing I heard about his high notes is that his vocal cords are quite thick, much more like a baritone, for a tenor. This enables him to hit those belts and still land delicately on the high notes when called for. Thank you for a very informative reaction.

David Phelps is a Christian gospel artist. Probably one of the most recognized within the genre. He was in the most famous quartet, the Gaithers (they have written and produced hundreds of songs) and then he went solo. He is classically trained and truly means what he sings. I’d highly recommend his version of O Holy Night. He is a vocal powerhouse for sure!

Comparing techniques - cf. Pavarotti's Jan. 14, 1980 performance in New York. Notably, Luciano's position on the final "Vincero!" - not only is his jaw dropped and his tongue like a dance floor, his mouth is open back to his earlobes. It might not be humanly possible to be any more open and unrestricted from diaphragm up! This is not a "one is better than the other" comparison, just noting the different techniques.

David is of the many Bill Gaither singers. i.e. a large group of Christian singers who have traveled around the world for decades performing, recording and making tens, maybe even hundreds of millions of dollars in concerts, DVD (and videos) CD's and tv infomercials. I am a messianic Hebrew while you might not be, but I will recommend this solo of him performing O Holy Night. (8445) Bill & Gloria Gaither - O Holy Night (Live) ft. David Phelps - KZbin

One thing David loves to do is never performing a song exactly the same way twice. He makes little changes which I think he does to freshen the song so it doesn't become a "cookie cutter" rendition. He always does a fabulous job.

The best version I have heard was from a fan who video taped it (I know it was not allowed but we all know how that goes) from a Gaither Vocal Band concert around 2012.
